Including a pair of passing touchdowns, LaDainian Tomlinson has scored 31 TDs this year, more than the totals of 21 teamsLaDainian Tomlinson had barely swept into the end zone and the record book when he was engulfed by the behemoths on his offensive line. They hoisted him onto their shoulders and carried him toward the sideline, with Tomlinson holding the ball high in his right hand and waving his left index finger, a 48-20 win over the Denver Broncos and the AFC West title all wrapped up.

Facing former boss Bill Parcells for the first time, Sean Payton called for a reverse on a fourth-and-1 and made featured players out of guys who had never scored. Everything he drew up worked so well that the first-year head coach was brazen enough to call for an onside kick while his New Orleans Saints already were well on their way to a 42-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. The onside kick worked too, by the way, making the Saints (9-4) big winners in a showdown for sole possession of the second-best record in the NFC.

As Tom Brady prepared to take a snap, he shouted and pointed across the line, anticipating a blitz from end Jason Taylor lined up at middle linebacker. Maybe Brady's teammates didn't hear him. They failed to block Taylor, who swooped up the middle untouched to force a harried, errant pass. It was that kind of day for Brady and the Patriots, who lost to the Miami Dolphins 21-0 Sunday. The roving Taylor led a disruptive defense that sacked Brady four times, forced him to fumble twice and limited him to 78 yards passing. New England totaled 12 first downs and 189 yards, both season lows, and lost three fumbles, giving them 11 turnovers in the past three games. The Patriots committed nine penalties. Their best play was an illegal forward pass.

Including the $51.1 million posting fee, the Red Sox will pay more than $100 million for Daisuke Matsuzaka.I hope he's worth it...Daisuke Matsuzaka has reached a deal with the Boston Red Sox for six years, $52 million, a source close to the negotiations has told SI.com. The deal contains escalator clauses that could bring it up to $60 million. The clauses are similar to the ones in the contract of Curt Schilling, another starting Red Sox pitcher, a person connected to the team said. Matsuzaka and the Red Sox came to an agreement shortly before both sides boarded a private jet out of Orange County, Calif., around 9 a.m. PST on Wednesday. Matsuzaka is to take a physical shortly after landing in Boston. The deadline to sign Matsuzaka, the most heralded pitcher in the Japan League, was midnight Thursday. But the sides rushed to finish the deal by early Wednesday so there'd be time to conduct a physical and to get the blood work back.

When Matsuzaka, agent Scott Boras and Red Sox officials all boarded the plane, speculation was high that a deal was at hand after very difficult negotiations over 29 days. "They all took off together," Red Sox owner John Henry wrote to the AP in an email. "Assume a deal is done or close."

SI.com confirmed a deal had, in fact, been struck for the righthanded superstar who was 108-60 in his career with the Seibu Lions and MVP of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, won by Japan, this past spring. The Red Sox won the right to negotiate with Matsuzaka by bidding $51.1 million in the posting process...

I'm pretty sure I stole it from you as I have a number of political cartoons. The ones you post in The Mote save me from searching for them myself. I should give you a credit.

I wouldn't have posted it again if I'd remembered where I got it.

Former top cyclist indicted in steroids probe...(AP)

SAN FRANCISCO — Former elite cyclist Tammy Thomas was indicted by a federal grand jury today on charges of hindering the government's steroid probe.

Thomas, 36, is accused of three counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to a federal grand jury investigating a steroid ring that spanned across many sports.

The indictment adds cycling, a sport often associated with doping, to a probe that has exposed steroid use in professional baseball, football and track and field.

Thomas was banned for life in August 2002 after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Norbolethone, which was detected in her urine samples.

No credit needed, wonk; I just wondered because many of my posts seem to be ignored and I fear I'm being obnoxious.

We uncorked a bottle tonight. We hadn't chilled the bottle beforehand so we served it over cracked ice. Delicious!

Mike Tyson was ordered released without bond on a felony drug possession charge Friday after an early-morning arrest in which Buckeye police said they found two bags of white powder in his back pocket. Tyson was arrested early Friday, after nearly ramming a police car, on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine when police stopped him shortly after he left a Scottsdale nightclub. According to the report, an officer saw Tyson trying to wipe a white powder off the console of his BMW as he approached.

Michael Jordan and his wife, Juanita, filed for divorce Friday after 17 years of marriage. Juanita Jordan previously filed for divorce in January 2002, but withdrew her petition a month later when the couple announced they were attempting a reconciliation. During her last divorce petition, Jordan said attempts to reconcile their marriage had failed and future ones "would be impractical and not in the best interests of the family." The couple met at a Chicago restaurant during his second season with the Bulls and were married Sept. 2, 1989, in Las Vegas. They have three children: Jeffrey, Marcus and Jasmine.

Oregon State quarterback Matt Moore looks for Yvenson Bernard in the first half of the Sun BowlOregon State coach Mike Riley was set to take his chances in overtime at the Sun Bowl. Then Missouri called timeout to have Joe Newton's 14-yard touchdown catch with 22.1 seconds to go reviewed, believing he may have bobbled the ball. During that break, Riley decided to go for the win. Yvenson Bernard barely pushed into the end zone on the gutsy 2-point conversion run, giving the 24th-ranked Beavers a 39-38 victory over the Tigers on Friday. Tony Temple had 194 yards, four short of the Sun Bowl record, on 20 carries with two touchdowns and Chase Daniel threw two touchdown passes for Missouri (8-5). The Tigers lost four of their last five after a 6-0 start, dropping the finale despite 561 yards of total offense. Temple missed setting a Sun Bowl record for rushing, 197 yards by Charles Alexander of LSU in 1977, after losing 4 yards on his final carry.

Trailing Minnesota by four touchdowns at halftime, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach told his team it had a chance to make history. The pep talk turned out to be a prediction. The Red Raiders spotted Minnesota a 31-point, third-quarter lead, then rallied for a stunning 44-41 overtime victory in the Insight Bowl Friday night, the largest comeback in Division I-A bowl history. The previous record for a bowl comeback was 30 points, set by Marshall against East Carolina in the 2001 GMAC Bowl.

Maryland methodically and meticulously put away Purdue -- and looked nothing like the team that ended the regular season with two lopsided losses. Sam Hollenbach passed for 223 yards and two touchdowns, Lance Ball rushed for 98 yards, and the Terrapins won the Champs Sports Bowl 24-7 on Friday night. Maryland blew a chance to play for the Atlantic Coast Conference title by losing to Boston College and Wake Forest by a combined 76-40 in November.

Kobe Bryant hoisted 45 shots against the Bobcats on Friday night. But few called for him ramming through pivot Emeka OkaforKobe Bryant's 58 points in 55 minutes were offset by two key errors in the third overtime, and the Charlotte Bobcats outlasted the Los Angeles Lakers 133-124 on Friday night. Bryant spoiled the third-highest point total of his career by committing a foul on Derek Anderson's 3-point attempt with 1:14 left. Anderson hit all three free throws to give Charlotte a 129-124 lead. Bryant then missed a long jumper and fouled out when Anderson drew a charge on the next possession. Bryant shot 22-of-45 and his performance trailed only his 81-point game last January in Toronto and a 62-point effort last December in Dallas.

Donyell Marshall's outside shot started falling before the game and never stopped. Marshall scored a season-high 29 points -- 21 on 3-pointers -- and LeBron James scored 32 in his final game as a 21-year-old, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 109-99 win over Milwaukee and snapping the Bucks' six-game winning streak Friday night. Larry Hughes emerged from a shooting slump with 26 points for the Cavaliers, who blew most of a 21-point lead in the second half before hanging on to win their seventh in a row at home against Milwaukee.

Mickael Pietrus figures the Golden State Warriors must lead the NBA in facemasks, now that he and Troy Murphy both have worn the protective plastic covers this season. Despite injuries and a tough schedule, the Warriors have been awfully hard-nosed lately -- and that's one reason they're back above .500. Baron Davis had 27 points and nine assists, and Pietrus matched his season high with 26 points in Golden State's fourth victory in five games, 110-100 over the Boston Celtics on Friday night. Andris Biedrins scored 20 points and matched his career high with 17 rebounds for the Warriors, who improved to 16-15 and never trailed in the final 46 minutes of their fifth straight home victory.
