SAN FRANCISCO — Former elite cyclist Tammy Thomas was indicted by a federal grand jury today on charges of hindering the government's steroid probe.
Thomas, 36, is accused of three counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to a federal grand jury investigating a steroid ring that spanned across many sports.
The indictment adds cycling, a sport often associated with doping, to a probe that has exposed steroid use in professional baseball, football and track and field.
Thomas was banned for life in August 2002 after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Norbolethone, which was detected in her urine samples.

Mike Tyson was ordered released without bond on a felony drug possession charge Friday after an early-morning arrest in which Buckeye police said they found two bags of white powder in his back pocket. Tyson was arrested early Friday, after nearly ramming a police car, on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine when police stopped him shortly after he left a Scottsdale nightclub. According to the report, an officer saw Tyson trying to wipe a white powder off the console of his BMW as he approached.
Michael Jordan and his wife, Juanita, filed for divorce Friday after 17 years of marriage. Juanita Jordan previously filed for divorce in January 2002, but withdrew her petition a month later when the couple announced they were attempting a reconciliation. During her last divorce petition, Jordan said attempts to reconcile their marriage had failed and future ones "would be impractical and not in the best interests of the family." The couple met at a Chicago restaurant during his second season with the Bulls and were married Sept. 2, 1989, in Las Vegas. They have three children: Jeffrey, Marcus and Jasmine.

Yvenson Bernard barely pushed into the end zone on the gutsy 2-point conversion run, giving the 24th-ranked Beavers a 39-38 victory over the Tigers on Friday. Tony Temple had 194 yards, four short of the Sun Bowl record, on 20 carries with two touchdowns and Chase Daniel threw two touchdown passes for Missouri (8-5). The Tigers lost four of their last five after a 6-0 start, dropping the finale despite 561 yards of total offense. Temple missed setting a Sun Bowl record for rushing, 197 yards by Charles Alexander of LSU in 1977, after losing 4 yards on his final carry.
Trailing Minnesota by four touchdowns at halftime, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach told his team it had a chance to make history. The pep talk turned out to be a prediction. The Red Raiders spotted Minnesota a 31-point, third-quarter lead, then rallied for a stunning 44-41 overtime victory in the Insight Bowl Friday night, the largest comeback in Division I-A bowl history. The previous record for a bowl comeback was 30 points, set by Marshall against East Carolina in the 2001 GMAC Bowl.
Maryland methodically and meticulously put away Purdue -- and looked nothing like the team that ended the regular season with two lopsided losses. Sam Hollenbach passed for 223 yards and two touchdowns, Lance Ball rushed for 98 yards, and the Terrapins won the Champs Sports Bowl 24-7 on Friday night. Maryland blew a chance to play for the Atlantic Coast Conference title by losing to Boston College and Wake Forest by a combined 76-40 in November.

Bryant spoiled the third-highest point total of his career by committing a foul on Derek Anderson's 3-point attempt with 1:14 left. Anderson hit all three free throws to give Charlotte a 129-124 lead. Bryant then missed a long jumper and fouled out when Anderson drew a charge on the next possession. Bryant shot 22-of-45 and his performance trailed only his 81-point game last January in Toronto and a 62-point effort last December in Dallas.
Donyell Marshall's outside shot started falling before the game and never stopped. Marshall scored a season-high 29 points -- 21 on 3-pointers -- and LeBron James scored 32 in his final game as a 21-year-old, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 109-99 win over Milwaukee and snapping the Bucks' six-game winning streak Friday night. The ninth-ranked Broncos completed a perfect season with an exhilarating 43-42 overtime victory over No. 7 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl Monday night, leaving Boise State and top-ranked Ohio State as the only teams with perfect records. The Buckeyes will play No. 2 Florida for the BCS national championship on the same field Jan. 8, but the Broncos (13-0) believe they belong in that game. And why not? Boise State showed plenty of heart and resilience in edging the Sooners (11-3) in one of the more amazing games in recent memory.
Even before his uniform had come off, Dwayne Jarrett's teammates were lobbying him to wear it one more year. After the day he had in the Rose Bowl, it was easy to see why. Jarrett, the sensational Southern California junior, caught 11 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns to help the eighth-ranked Trojans finish their season with a statement Monday in a 32-18 romp over Michigan. It was an all-encompassing blowout over a solid, third-ranked Michigan squad that positioned USC (11-2) as maybe The Team to watch next season.
Patrick White was bruised and determined with the Gator Bowl hanging in the balance. The quarterback played through ankle, hand and neck injuries to lead West Virginia back from an 18-point deficit in the second half for a 38-35 win over Georgia Tech on Monday. White was 9-of-15 for 131 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 22 times for 145 yards and a score. He handled the bulk of the carries with tailback Steve Slaton, the country's third-leading rusher at 144 yards a game, limited with a badly bruised left thigh. Slaton's status was uncertain before kickoff, and the sophomore managed just 11 yards on three carries -- all in the first half. Owen Schmitt also ran 13 times for 109 yards and two TDs.
Once again, Auburn was giving up drive-killing sacks, struggling to run the ball and producing scant yardage. The 10th-ranked Tigers managed a feeble 46 first-half yards and had to rely on big plays from special teams and defense for a 17-14 victory over No. 22 Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl on Monday. It was hardly the offensive explosion they were hoping for with quarterback Brandon Cox, tailback Kenny Irons and receiver Courtney Taylor back in good health. The Tigers (11-2) are better at racking up wins than big yardage. They had just 178 total yards against the Cornhuskers (9-5), their fourth time being held to less than 215 yards this season.

ESPN, citing no sources, reports Russell will skip his senior season and enter the NFL Draft in April. Russell is coming off a 332-yard, two-touchdown performance in the Tigers' 41-14 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl last week. The 6-foot-6, 252-pounder is expected to be a top-10 selection in April's draft and will battle ND's Brady Quinn to be the first quarterback taken.
Foul play probably was not a factor in the death of Southern California kicker Mario Danelo, whose body was found about 120 feet down a rocky cliff, police said Sunday. "It was fairly apparent that this was either an accident or suicide," said Lt. Paul Vernon. Investigators were examining evidence recovered after Danelo's body was found Saturday afternoon near Point Fermin lighthouse in the city's San Pedro section. Someone flying a remote-control airplane noticed something at the bottom of the cliff Saturday and a friend hiked down to the beach and discovered the body, police officials said.
A judge ordered 34 unruly football fans to pick up litter and to perform other acts of community service Monday, the day Ohio State played for the national championship. The fans -- a mix of students, locals and out-of-towners -- admitted to underage drinking, disorderly conduct or both on Nov. 18, when the top-ranked Buckeyes defeated rival Michigan. Municipal Court Judge Julia Dorrian, an Ohio State alumna, said she scheduled the community service Monday to send a message. While other fans will be gearing up for Ohio State's showdown with No. 2 Florida in Glendale, Ariz., the 34 people who received the sentence were expected to spend the day sweeping cigarette butts out of parking lots, cleaning restrooms, picking up litter and pulling weeds at such places as the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the state fairgrounds.
Not that they missed much. With big plays, a marathon drive and a smothering defense, Southern Miss gave Ohio a tough lesson on postseason play. The Golden Eagles also gave a pretty good tutorial on how to make a halftime lead hold up in a 28-7 victory over the Bobcats on Sunday night in the GMAC Bowl. After a scoreless first quarter, Southern Miss (9-5) scored 21 second-quarter points then surged out of halftime with a season-long 17-play touchdown drive that effectively ended any comeback threat.

The Patriots coach taught his former student that maybe he can win another without him -- especially with his quarterback in championship form. The Jets stuck around -- until the second half rolled around. Brady capped long scoring drives with short touchdown passes to Daniel Graham and Kevin Faulk, and Asante Samuel sealed it with a 36-yard interception return for a score with 4:54 left as New England beat Mangini's New York Jets 37-16 on Sunday.
Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts kept their playoff persona alive, looking shaky and sloppy at times. At least on Saturday, they faced a team that struggled even more. While Manning's numbers were good, his performance was mediocre. Fortunately for the Colts, their beleaguered defense bailed them out with a strong effort in a 23-8 victory over the inept Kansas City Chiefs. For most of the day, the Indianapolis defense was so good -- or perhaps more accurately, Kansas City's offense was so bad -- that Manning's miscues didn't stop the AFC South champions from advancing to the next round at Baltimore. While Manning was throwing three interceptions and looking tentative, the Chiefs' Larry Johnson and Trent Green were simply awful for more than 40 minutes.
All Tony Romo had to do was put the ball down and let Martin Gramatica make an easy kick -- just 19 yards, even closer than an extra point. That's where it all slipped away from the Dallas Cowboys. The Pro Bowl quarterback who saved their season ended it, too. Romo's bobble on the field-goal try with 1:19 left led to a scramble that ended 2 yards shy of the end zone and a yard short of a first down, preserving a 21-20 victory for the Seattle Seahawks in the wildest of wild-card games Saturday night.
