The ninth-ranked Broncos completed a perfect season with an exhilarating 43-42 overtime victory over No. 7 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl Monday night, leaving Boise State and top-ranked Ohio State as the only teams with perfect records. The Buckeyes will play No. 2 Florida for the BCS national championship on the same field Jan. 8, but the Broncos (13-0) believe they belong in that game. And why not? Boise State showed plenty of heart and resilience in edging the Sooners (11-3) in one of the more amazing games in recent memory.
Even before his uniform had come off, Dwayne Jarrett's teammates were lobbying him to wear it one more year. After the day he had in the Rose Bowl, it was easy to see why. Jarrett, the sensational Southern California junior, caught 11 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns to help the eighth-ranked Trojans finish their season with a statement Monday in a 32-18 romp over Michigan. It was an all-encompassing blowout over a solid, third-ranked Michigan squad that positioned USC (11-2) as maybe The Team to watch next season.
Patrick White was bruised and determined with the Gator Bowl hanging in the balance. The quarterback played through ankle, hand and neck injuries to lead West Virginia back from an 18-point deficit in the second half for a 38-35 win over Georgia Tech on Monday. White was 9-of-15 for 131 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 22 times for 145 yards and a score. He handled the bulk of the carries with tailback Steve Slaton, the country's third-leading rusher at 144 yards a game, limited with a badly bruised left thigh. Slaton's status was uncertain before kickoff, and the sophomore managed just 11 yards on three carries -- all in the first half. Owen Schmitt also ran 13 times for 109 yards and two TDs.
Once again, Auburn was giving up drive-killing sacks, struggling to run the ball and producing scant yardage. The 10th-ranked Tigers managed a feeble 46 first-half yards and had to rely on big plays from special teams and defense for a 17-14 victory over No. 22 Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl on Monday. It was hardly the offensive explosion they were hoping for with quarterback Brandon Cox, tailback Kenny Irons and receiver Courtney Taylor back in good health. The Tigers (11-2) are better at racking up wins than big yardage. They had just 178 total yards against the Cornhuskers (9-5), their fourth time being held to less than 215 yards this season.

ESPN, citing no sources, reports Russell will skip his senior season and enter the NFL Draft in April. Russell is coming off a 332-yard, two-touchdown performance in the Tigers' 41-14 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl last week. The 6-foot-6, 252-pounder is expected to be a top-10 selection in April's draft and will battle ND's Brady Quinn to be the first quarterback taken.
Foul play probably was not a factor in the death of Southern California kicker Mario Danelo, whose body was found about 120 feet down a rocky cliff, police said Sunday. "It was fairly apparent that this was either an accident or suicide," said Lt. Paul Vernon. Investigators were examining evidence recovered after Danelo's body was found Saturday afternoon near Point Fermin lighthouse in the city's San Pedro section. Someone flying a remote-control airplane noticed something at the bottom of the cliff Saturday and a friend hiked down to the beach and discovered the body, police officials said.
A judge ordered 34 unruly football fans to pick up litter and to perform other acts of community service Monday, the day Ohio State played for the national championship. The fans -- a mix of students, locals and out-of-towners -- admitted to underage drinking, disorderly conduct or both on Nov. 18, when the top-ranked Buckeyes defeated rival Michigan. Municipal Court Judge Julia Dorrian, an Ohio State alumna, said she scheduled the community service Monday to send a message. While other fans will be gearing up for Ohio State's showdown with No. 2 Florida in Glendale, Ariz., the 34 people who received the sentence were expected to spend the day sweeping cigarette butts out of parking lots, cleaning restrooms, picking up litter and pulling weeds at such places as the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the state fairgrounds.
Not that they missed much. With big plays, a marathon drive and a smothering defense, Southern Miss gave Ohio a tough lesson on postseason play. The Golden Eagles also gave a pretty good tutorial on how to make a halftime lead hold up in a 28-7 victory over the Bobcats on Sunday night in the GMAC Bowl. After a scoreless first quarter, Southern Miss (9-5) scored 21 second-quarter points then surged out of halftime with a season-long 17-play touchdown drive that effectively ended any comeback threat.

The Patriots coach taught his former student that maybe he can win another without him -- especially with his quarterback in championship form. The Jets stuck around -- until the second half rolled around. Brady capped long scoring drives with short touchdown passes to Daniel Graham and Kevin Faulk, and Asante Samuel sealed it with a 36-yard interception return for a score with 4:54 left as New England beat Mangini's New York Jets 37-16 on Sunday.
Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts kept their playoff persona alive, looking shaky and sloppy at times. At least on Saturday, they faced a team that struggled even more. While Manning's numbers were good, his performance was mediocre. Fortunately for the Colts, their beleaguered defense bailed them out with a strong effort in a 23-8 victory over the inept Kansas City Chiefs. For most of the day, the Indianapolis defense was so good -- or perhaps more accurately, Kansas City's offense was so bad -- that Manning's miscues didn't stop the AFC South champions from advancing to the next round at Baltimore. While Manning was throwing three interceptions and looking tentative, the Chiefs' Larry Johnson and Trent Green were simply awful for more than 40 minutes.
All Tony Romo had to do was put the ball down and let Martin Gramatica make an easy kick -- just 19 yards, even closer than an extra point. That's where it all slipped away from the Dallas Cowboys. The Pro Bowl quarterback who saved their season ended it, too. Romo's bobble on the field-goal try with 1:19 left led to a scramble that ended 2 yards shy of the end zone and a yard short of a first down, preserving a 21-20 victory for the Seattle Seahawks in the wildest of wild-card games Saturday night.

But Peterson did, allowing Howard to make a wide-open layup to give Dallas the lead. Toronto's Anthony Parker missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Playing in just his second game with the Denver Nuggets, Steve Blake showed the Portland Trail Blazers what they've been missing. Blake, traded to Milwaukee in the offseason and acquired by Denver from the Bucks last week, had a career-high 25 points against his former team Sunday night, in Denver's 109-93 victory over Portland.

Miller finished in 2 minutes, 28.89 seconds for his 25th World Cup win, 0.65 seconds faster than Didier Cuche of Switzerland. Peter Fill of Italy was third, 1.47 seconds behind Miller. American Steven Nyman was 11th.
American bobsledder Steven Holcomb won a four-man World Cup race Sunday for his second victory in two days. Holcomb and teammates Pavle Jovanovic, Steve Mesler, and Brock Kreitzburg had a combined time of 1 minute, 45.04 seconds, 0.21 ahead of Germany's Andre Lange. Pierre Lueders of Canada was third, 0.25 behind. Lange has now secured the European Championship as the highest-placed European finisher. After four of eight races, Holcomb has 285 points to share fourth place with Lange in World Cup standings. Evgeni Popov of Russia, who finished fourth, leads with 360 points, followed by Leuders with 300 and Janis Minins of Latvia with 285.
Sven Kramer won the men's 10,000 meter race Sunday at the European Speedskating Championships. The Dutch skater won in 13 minutes, 10.44 seconds, 4.93 seconds ahead of teammate Carl Verheijen. Enrico Fabris of Italy was third, 11.07 behind. Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the women's 5,000 in 6:58.45 to add to her victory in the 3,000 on Saturday. Renate Groenewold of the Netherlands finished second in 7:08.76 and Claudia Pechstein of Germany was third, 11.6 seconds back.
 Silke Kraushaar-Pielach led the German women to their 70th straight luge World Cup win Sunday. The Germans swept the top four places, with Kraushaar-Pielach finishing her two heats in 1 minute, 27.568 seconds while claiming her fifth win in six season races. Tatjana Huefner was second in 1:27.861. Corinna Martini was third in 1:28.120 in her World Cup debut. She replaced Sylke Otto, the two-time Olympic champion who retired Friday to have a child. Christian Oberstolz and Patric Gruber of Italy won the men's doubles in 1:27.373, catching Germany's Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch with the fastest second heat. They also pulled even with the Germans in the World Cup standings with 555 points. Leitner and Resch finished in 1:27.483, with Gerhard Plankensteiner and Oswald Haselrieder of Italy third in 1:27.550.

Brady overcame three interceptions, his career playoff high, to lead the Patriots to 11 points in 3:26 late in the game. He and coach Bill Belichick now have a 12-1 postseason record together, and need to win at Indianapolis next Sunday to make their fourth Super Bowl trip in six seasons. As tough a win as it was for New England, it was a gut-wrenching loss for San Diego and its coach, Marty Schottenheimer, whose job could be in jeopardy after his career postseason record tumbled to 5-13. Tomlinson shattered several league records in helping the Chargers go an NFL-best 14-2, including 8-0 at home in the regular season.
Peyton Manning couldn't get Indianapolis into the end zone and, for once, it didn't matter. That's because Adam Vinatieri provided the Colts with all the offense they needed to advance to the AFC championship game. Signed during the offseason specifically for his playoff experience, Vinatieri kicked five field goals Saturday to put his name in the NFL record book and carry Indianapolis past the Baltimore Ravens 15-6.
Field goals were crucial in these semi-finals. Ever reliable Robbie Gould, with a boost from often criticized Rex Grossman, delivered the Chicago Bears into the NFC title game. Gould, working construction 16 months ago, cleared a path for the Bears with his strong leg Sunday, kicking a 49-yard field goal in overtime for a 27-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The game-winner came shortly after Grossman got them in position with a clutch pass to Rashied Davis.
Who needs Mardi Gras when you’re one game from the Super Bowl? Deuce McAllister and rookie sensation Reggie Bush gave this battered city a reason to throw itself a party, carrying the New Orleans Saints where they’ve never been before — one game from the Super Bowl. It was the veteran McAllister with his two touchdowns and team playoff mark of 143 yards rushing, and the rookie Bush with his collection of magnificent moves, that made the difference in the raucous Superdome. To constant chants of "DEUCE!" or "REG-GIE! REG-GIE!" the Saints used an assortment of spectacular plays to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-24.
