http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/tennis/specials/us_open/2008/09/07/womens.final.ap/index.html = APDisplaying the talent and tenacity that allowed her to dominate tennis earlier in the decade, Serena Williams outlasted Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 Sunday night in a thrill-a-minute match chock full of marvelous strokes and momentum swings to win her third U.S. Open championship and ninth Grand Slam title. And there was this "added bonus," as Williams termed it: She returns to the top of the rankings. "I think this title meant more to Serena than any title she's ever won," her father and coach, Richard Williams said. As the women met at the net when it ended, Williams felt compelled to say to Jankovic, "I'm sorry I got so excited."…

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/tennis/specials/us_open/2008/09/08/bc.ten.us.open.mens.final.ap/index.html?eref=sircrc - APBack at his best, back at the top of tennis, Roger Federer easily beat Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 Monday to win his fifth consecutive U.S. Open championship and 13th major title overall. Federer is the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win the tournament that many times in a row. He also moved within one major championship of tying Pete Sampras' career record of 14. The victory clearly came as something of a relief to Federer, who has struggled during a lackluster-only-for-him season. He lost in the semifinals at the Australian Open, and to nemesis Rafael Nadal in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, meaning Federer was on the verge of his first year since 2002 without a major title. And his record streak of 237 consecutive weeks at No. 1 ended last month when Nadal surpassed him.

I'm happy to see both Serena and Federer win. It wouldn't have bothered me much had either of them lost, but especially in Federer's case, I'm glad for the outcome.

Me too!

I should add that I was also happy to see Murray make the finals. He had never won even a set against Nadal before, so this is a big deal for him, and for the UK, who have been waiting for a champion of their own.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/gameflash/2008/09/14/280914222_photos.html - AP Photo/Tom MihalekBrett Myers received a standing ovation from the near-capacity crowd when he came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. The cheer grew even more deafening an inning later, when Myers got J.J. Hardy to fly to left for the final out. Another September run has the Phillies in great position to make the playoffs. Myers pitched a two-hitter and the Philadelphia Phillies moved into a tie for the NL wild-card lead, sweeping a day-night doubleheader from Milwaukee by winning the second game 6-1 on Sunday. And with the Mets losing to Atlanta, Philadelphia moved within a game of the Mets in the NL East.

The Boston Red Sox dressed their rookies in thrift shop castoffs and kid-flick clothing on Sunday, as is the tradition for their last road trip of the season. Once they get to Tampa, it's time to get serious. Jon Lester held Toronto to four hits over eight innings to outpitch Roy Halladay as Boston won 4-3 to take three of four from the third-place Blue Jays. The Red Sox quickly turned their attention to the team on top of the AL East, heading south for three against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in a building where Boston is 0-6 so far this season. The Red Sox moved within one game of the Rays on Sunday when Tampa Bay lost to the New York Yankees 8-4. Boston took a six-game lead in the wild card over the Minnesota Twins, who lost 7-3 to Baltimore.

All the elements were in Carlos Zambrano's favor. Zambrano pitched the first no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs in 36 years, returning from a sore rotator cuff to shut down the Houston Astros 5-0 Sunday night in a game relocated because of Hurricane Ike. Pitching for the first time since Sept. 2, and cheered on by thousands of Cubs fans, Zambrano stopped a Houston team that had not played since Thursday. The storm forced baseball to move two games from Texas to Miller Park and the weary Astros arrived only hours before the first pitch. The Cubs, meanwhile, faced a short bus ride. Plenty of their faithful followed them up I-94, once again turning the Brewers' ballpark into "Wrigley North." This was baseball's first neutral-site no-hitter, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

Matt Cassel was efficient running the offense in his first NFL start, taking over for the injured quarterback and leading the Patriots over Brett Favre and the New York Jets 19-10 on Sunday. Cassel, who hadn't started at any level since his senior year of high school, was 16-of-23 for 165 yards, Sammy Morris ran for a touchdown and Stephen Gostkowski kicked four field goals. The Jets, slight favorites going in, and Patriots receiver Randy Moss said New England was still the team to beat even without Brady, who was lost for the season last Sunday when he injured his left knee against Kansas City. The Patriots (2-0) then showed why, ruining the Jets' home opener and Favre's first regular-season home start for New York. New England won its 21st straight regular-season game, and beat the Jets for the eighth straight time at the Meadowlands.

Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes in the first four drives of his second start, helping Green Bay build a big lead it needed in a 48-25 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Green Bay led 21-0 midway through the second quarter, but fell behind by a point with 7:41 left after Calvin Johnson caught his second TD in the fourth quarter. The Packers went back ahead with a field goal on the ensuing drive, then turned the game back into the rout it had been with three straight interceptions. Charles Woodson and Nick Collins returned two of the picks for touchdowns, giving Green Bay a lopsided lead again. Last season in Detroit, Favre helped the Packers build a 34-12 lead in the fourth before holding off a rally. Green Bay (2-0) certainly will not regret its decision any time soon to stick with Rodgers and trade Favre to the New York Jets after he came out of retirement. The Packers stayed committed to the first-round pick from 2005 despite mounting hype about Favre's possible return during the offseason. Rodgers was 24-of-38 for 328 yards, three scores and a fumble in his first start on the road and his first fourth-quarter comeback.

Texas rode its resounding Red River Rivalry upset right to No. 1. The Longhorns leapfrogged No. 2 Alabama on Sunday and sit atop The Associated Press Top 25 in the regular season for the first time in 24 years after beating Oklahoma 45-35. Texas' jump to No. 1 is the largest since Miami went from No. 6 to No. 1 on Aug. 29, 1988, after beating preseason top-ranked Florida State 31-0 to start the season. Texas received 39 first-place votes and 1,599 points from the media panel. Alabama received the other 36 first-place votes and 1,582 points.

It certainly has been a fluid situation. The Longhorns are the fourth No. 1 team this season, following Georgia, Southern California and Oklahoma. So it's just more of the same following an unpredictable 2007 season that had four No. 1 teams and eight different teams ranked second. For the second time this season, three of the top four teams in the country lost on the same weekend. While the losses by the previously top-ranked Sooners, Missouri and LSU weren't stunning, they did a number on the rankings.

Unbeaten Penn State moved up three spots to No. 3. The Sooners dropped three spots to No. 4 after their first loss. Florida jumped six spots to No. 5 after pounding LSU 51-21 on Saturday night. No. 6 Southern California is followed by Big 12 rivals Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, which upset Missouri 28-23 and has its highest ranking since November 1985 when the Cowboys were seventh. No. 9 BYU and Georgia round out the top 10. Missouri dropped eight spots to No. 11. The Tigers could vault right back up the polls when they play Texas in Austin on Saturday.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/10/12/moyer.sider.ap/index.html - Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesJamie Moyer sure looked his age against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 45-year-old Philadelphia left-hander — the second-oldest pitcher to start a postseason game — put the Phillies in an early hole Sunday night and they never recovered. Moyer gave up three singles and a run on his first five pitches, barely resembling the 16-game winner he was during the regular season. The Dodgers went on to a 7-2 victory that left them trailing the best-of-seven NLCS 2-1, with Game 4 on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. Neither team has won on the road in 11 meetings this season. The Phillies fell to 3-12 in Game 3 of playoff series, including 2-5 in the NLCS. Moyer allowed six runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings, and struck out two in his shortest outing since July 4, 1998, when he lasted one inning for Seattle at Texas. His stint was also the shortest by a Phillies starter in a postseason game since Larry Christenson lasted one-third of an inning in Game 4 of the 1980 World Series against Kansas City…

B.J. Upton and the Tampa Bay Rays won a game of home run derby with a shallow fly ball. Pinch-runner Fernando Perez dashed home on Upton's sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Rays outlasted the Boston Red Sox 9-8 early Sunday, evening the AL championship series at one game each. The teams combined for seven home runs, tying a postseason record. The Rays wound up winning a game that lasted 5 hours, 27 minutes when the speedy Perez tagged up on Upton's one-out fly and beat right fielder J.D. Drew's throw home. The series shifts to Fenway Park for Game 3 Monday, with left-hander Jon Lester pitching for Boston against Matt Garza…

http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/slideshow/photo//081012/483/090e80374ed44f4eafce726cd3babca7/ - AP Photo/John BazemoreJason Elam made the most of his second chance, kicking a 48-yard field goal on the final play to give the Atlanta Falcons a stunning 22-20 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Elam appeared to be the goat after hooking a 33-yard attempt wide left with less than 3 minutes left, squandering a chance to give the Falcons an insurmountable nine-point lead. The Bears took advantage of Elam's first miss in 31 attempts, quickly driving down the field and going ahead for the first time in the game when Kyle Orton hit Rashied Davis on a 17-yard touchdown with 11 seconds remaining. Robbie Gould booted through the extra point that gave Chicago a 20-19 lead. But the surprising Falcons, coming off an upset of the Packers in Green Bay, weren't done. With many fans heading for the exits, Gould pooched the ensuing kickoff, and Harry Douglas managed a 10-yard return to the Atlanta 44…

Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes and San Diego's defense stuffed quarterback Matt Cassel on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line to highlight a 30-10 win over New England on Sunday night. Rivers and the rest of the Chargers (3-3) know that beating the Patriots doesn't make up for the loss that kept them out of the Super Bowl or that mind-numbing home playoff defeat two seasons ago. What it did, though, was put to rest the questions about the Chargers' maddening inconsistency, especially since they head out on a long and winding road trip that takes them to Buffalo and then London for a game against the New Orleans Saints. With passes of 49 yards to Malcom Floyd, 4 yards to Vincent Jackson and 1 yard to Antonio Gates, it was the fourth time this season that Rivers threw three TD passes. Rivers completed 18 of 27 passes for 306 yards. Cassel, making his fifth career start, was sacked four times and intercepted once. He was 22-of-38 for 203 yards…
