I signed up with Children's Hospital in Boston when my cousin had leukemia (she died when she was seven). That was over thirty years ago, before the national group was formed. I doubt they'd take anything from me now, though.

yes I'm sure...not sure if my graves' disease will preclude me from being a donor or not, though I'm sure they'll tell me.

Ovarian cancer breakthrough reported***(HouChron)

Scientists have identified two proteins in patients with ovarian cancer that, when prevalent, dramatically increase their chance for survival.

Led by researchers at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the discovery marks a significant advance for an emerging area of basic science called RNA interference, which one day may transform medicine.

***back in the dark ages when I was studying newspapering I was warned about using the term breakthrough in such matters. Probably still good advice.

Whaddya know... another breakthrough (I hope)

Alzheimer's disease vaccine reported...

Dr. Debra Cherry is the executive vice president of the Alzheimer's Association.

"What this vaccine does is it enters the brain and it picks up the plaques and cleans them from the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease," says Dr. Cherry. "What we maybe able to do is stop the progression of the disease in those who are already effected, and perhaps if we find people early enough, prevent them from developing the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease."

Wow! if true this is significant!

7460. judithathome - 1/10/2009 12:49:16 AM

Great hope for all of us who are older, for sure!

7461. wabbit - 1/29/2009 12:12:54 AM

omg, talk about pigging out. Bacon Explosion is sweeping the nation, according to the NY Times. I would think the person wearing gloves would be better off letting the grease lube their skin rather than their belly, but that's me.

My brother is going to be making this soon, I'm sure.

7462. judithathome - 1/29/2009 3:16:14 PM

Heresy to go to all that trouble and then put it on canned biscuits!!

7463. Wombat - 1/29/2009 6:03:46 PM

A strip of bacon (cooked) is about 35 calories. Would you rather have a glass of fruit juice or four strips of bacon?

7464. wabbit - 1/29/2009 7:03:42 PM

I'm not much for counting calories, but my arteries clog just reading the recipe.

JaH, how about a nice loaf of French bread? I could see this being something that would go down easily at a July 4 cookout. Bacon Explosion, a slice of bread, an ear of corn and a bottle of Guinness.

7465. alistairconnor - 1/29/2009 7:07:55 PM

Jeez... I could do that!
Bacon explosion indeed. Obscenely, heretically gross. I want one.

7466. anomie - 1/29/2009 8:07:53 PM

Yeah, that bacon thing is pretty disgusting. Where can I get one? Ha!

7467. alistairconnor - 1/30/2009 1:04:54 PM

I think I really need to get a smoker.

But to justify that ethically, I would have to take up fishing.

7468. thoughtful - 1/30/2009 4:22:27 PM

This peanut butter recall is huge. Apparently there are like 3 makers of peanut butter and they sell the stuff in these gigantic drums that go into all sorts of products including some labeled "organic" and "natural"

Just take a look at all the products including brownies, cakes, cookies, crackers, candy, pet food, snack bars, ice cream and fruit and vegetable products. Un freakin believable!

I wish to report in. Sorry for that, it's taking liberties to post like this.

I've follwed some of the nations health crises, so I could presume to add one or two tidbits, but I'ld rather mention my own ailment. It's become interesting to me, as to its unknown cause (etiology) and very dubious treatments.

I have what is known as Levator Syndrome. It's the muscle that holds up our rectum. You will not want that to waste away, it would have a most unpleasant outcome. The syndrome relates solely to pain, very uncomfortable pain. It's been going on for over 4 months and will not go away any time soon. The doctor just diagnosed it Monday, and I was sure of it last friday. I searched WebMd, once I knew for sure the proper direction and found the name. The surgeon agreed on Monday. I started a heat pad with massagers on it, and that has given the only relief to date. Even Aleve does near to nothing to ebb it. I cannot sit comfortably at all, not ever. It's very disturbing.

So, that's the bit of interest I take from it, that it's rare and of no known etiology. I don't like it, but at least it's interesting.

7470. wabbit - 2/25/2009 6:15:05 PM

Oh Rick, that does sound uncomfortable. I'd never heard of Levator Syndrome. Sounds like heat and massage are about the best treatments.

I'm always surprised at how many of us here have health issues beyond the common cold and ear infections.

7471. thoughtful - 2/25/2009 7:02:27 PM

Have you tried acupuncture? It often can help with illnesses that trad'l medicine cannot treat.

Also you might try transcendental meditation...check out the stuff that Jon Kabat Zinn is doing on treating chronic pain through meditation...it's interesting stuff.

7472. RickNelson - 2/25/2009 8:06:27 PM

I asked about the acupuncture, but the surgeon didn't believe it would do any good, as the needles for something so far internal would likely have no effect.

I actually know my mantra for transcendental meditation. I've not tried it. With dubious treatments, being calm is of the most important cures.

I've been told that my body is over-reacting to stressors.

Nahhh, not me, over-react to stress, LOL!

7473. thoughtful - 2/25/2009 8:27:10 PM

well i certainly wouldn't take anything a surgeon says about acupuncture....rather go to an acupuncturist and give it a try.

the point of acupuncture

Ms. Jones underwent two more acupuncture treatments in the next few weeks, which she believes cured the levator syndrome.

7474. thoughtful - 2/25/2009 8:28:58 PM

Yes, I had a case of this about 3 months ago. A 75 y/o female with a 6 month history of Levator Ani spasms who was unable to sit because of constant pain. After failing conventional therapy of anti-spasmodics, sitz baths, and herbals, I treated her with 2 acupuncture treatments. Following the first treatment her relief was so dramatic that she and her husband were able to travel to Florida. After returning 2 weeks later (and, 80% improved) she completed her final treatment with complete resolution of the problem.

If you would like to discuss this case further or speak with the patient, please advise.
