7812. thoughtful - 7/19/2010 2:39:32 AM thanks...i'll give it a try.
a/v is the next big expense on the house.
it's been extremely hot so we are spending weekend nights there as the house has ac, but no a/v....interesting how i don't find i miss it that much...yet when i come home, the first thing that seems to go on is the tv...go figure. 7813. arkymalarky - 7/19/2010 3:26:43 AM Caveat on the latest iphone: bob's sister is getting dropped calls, even with the case. Bob went to get one yesterday and they don't keep them in stock. You have to order with a credit card--no debit--and wait 7-21 days. He decided to wait until the call drop issue is truly fixed or get something else. 7814. thoughtful - 7/19/2010 1:55:02 PM thanks..i have been reading about the problem.... 7815. alistairConnor - 7/25/2010 10:36:06 PM Ahaaa!
I just helped a visiting friend tether his iPhone to his (windows) laptop. Quite simple really. He had no idea it was possible, and it will be hugely useful to him (he's an interpreter/translator and travels a lot).
His original request was to plug into the net via an ethernet cable because his wifi wasn't working... one thing led to another.
I have nothing against Apple, but it feels good to defeat their lockdown strategy. 7816. wabbit - 8/7/2011 4:45:32 PM Happy 20th Birthday to the World Wide Web!
I'm a day late. On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee posted to a newsgroup outlining his idea for the WWW, including a link to the first webpage. Interesting stuff. 7817. judithathome - 8/8/2011 5:54:21 PM I have a new idol: he's an astrophysicist rock star named Neil deGrasse Tyson.

What used to bug me about Facebook was that every time they made an "update", you're previous settings were disappeared back to the initial FB defaults. They didn't seem to do that this last time, but I keep on eye on them.
I wonder if I have some kind of record for fewest FB friends while being a multi-year member. I'm barely into two digits worth of friends. Of course, I actually do know them all...
Google's change seems to be mostly about consolidation and CYA. Same rules apply for me, though. Keep a tight grip on your privacy. 7821. arkymalarky - 1/27/2012 7:20:26 PM I have 150 or so but most other than fam and friends are from my closed school. 7822. arkymalarky - 1/27/2012 7:23:01 PM My google problem is with my official email, amazon account for the fire, etc. I don't want them consolidating and advertising plus i dont want my info in one place. 7823. wabbit - 1/27/2012 8:17:02 PM No, I meant that Google had privacy policies that were essentially redundant, in that it was the same info in many places. Near as I can tell, they cut out some of the repetition and basically said, "we're selling as much of your info as we can get away with", except instead of saying that twelve times, they're down to six times. 7824. arkymalarky - 1/28/2012 3:35:31 AM Oh. It sounded to me like they were combining everything "across devices" and they are also pushing google+ and I don't like what I've seen if its privacy policy. And I don't like them trying to funnel me into it, which happened the other day on my phone. I had to dump my cookies and history just to back out of the signup page. 7825. wabbit - 1/28/2012 3:37:57 AM I'm staying away from Google+ as well. Facebook is bad enough. 7826. arkymalarky - 1/28/2012 3:44:52 AM What i did was go thru the wiki link on sopa to contact my congressman usung my email. Instead it went to google+ and wouldn't let me resubmit or back out. Pissed me off. 7827. wabbit - 1/29/2012 12:00:37 AM Google has always done that, right from the start. I have been telling people forever to be sure to *log out* of Gmail, not just close the browser. If you don't hit that log out button, you are still logged in and they are watching you. In Google's defense, they have never made any secret of that, and surely Yahoo and Microsoft do the same thing. The problem is with new hardware, like cellphones and tablets, which we never turn off. If you use them to check email, you are persistently logged in, and hence being tracked. Sometimes rebooting is the only way out, then rethinking how badly we need to check our email 24/7.
You might be able to have your browser dump cookies whenever you close the browser. You just need to decide which cookies, if any, you want to allow. The Mote cookie only stores your log-in info so you don't need to sign in and set the time whenever you open the site. However, not all cookies are so benign.
mtc-ymmv 7828. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 12:34:20 AM Oh yeah. I forget it's the phone. I don't think about it until I can't back out of the "I agree to the terms" page. 7829. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 12:35:35 AM I was fine to send an email, but once google funneled me to + it wouldn't let me. 7830. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 12:37:21 AM I couldn't log out, go to email or anything. I never agreed so I hope I'm not in + without realizing it. 7831. wabbit - 1/29/2012 12:41:26 AM You shouldn't be, but they are on to you now! No doubt you'll get stuck in the whirlpool again.
