My google problem is with my official email, amazon account for the fire, etc. I don't want them consolidating and advertising plus i dont want my info in one place.

No, I meant that Google had privacy policies that were essentially redundant, in that it was the same info in many places. Near as I can tell, they cut out some of the repetition and basically said, "we're selling as much of your info as we can get away with", except instead of saying that twelve times, they're down to six times.

Oh. It sounded to me like they were combining everything "across devices" and they are also pushing google+ and I don't like what I've seen if its privacy policy. And I don't like them trying to funnel me into it, which happened the other day on my phone. I had to dump my cookies and history just to back out of the signup page.

7825. wabbit - 1/28/2012 3:37:57 AM

I'm staying away from Google+ as well. Facebook is bad enough.

7826. arkymalarky - 1/28/2012 3:44:52 AM

What i did was go thru the wiki link on sopa to contact my congressman usung my email. Instead it went to google+ and wouldn't let me resubmit or back out. Pissed me off.

Google has always done that, right from the start. I have been telling people forever to be sure to *log out* of Gmail, not just close the browser. If you don't hit that log out button, you are still logged in and they are watching you. In Google's defense, they have never made any secret of that, and surely Yahoo and Microsoft do the same thing. The problem is with new hardware, like cellphones and tablets, which we never turn off. If you use them to check email, you are persistently logged in, and hence being tracked. Sometimes rebooting is the only way out, then rethinking how badly we need to check our email 24/7.

You might be able to have your browser dump cookies whenever you close the browser. You just need to decide which cookies, if any, you want to allow. The Mote cookie only stores your log-in info so you don't need to sign in and set the time whenever you open the site. However, not all cookies are so benign.

Oh yeah. I forget it's the phone. I don't think about it until I can't back out of the "I agree to the terms" page.

7829. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 12:35:35 AM

I was fine to send an email, but once google funneled me to + it wouldn't let me.

7830. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 12:37:21 AM

I couldn't log out, go to email or anything. I never agreed so I hope I'm not in + without realizing it.

7831. wabbit - 1/29/2012 12:41:26 AM

You shouldn't be, but they are on to you now! No doubt you'll get stuck in the whirlpool again.

7832. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 1:29:23 AM

Haha! If only I'd been an apple i-head like stan. But nooooii, I had to have a droid

7833. iiibbb - 1/29/2012 1:49:18 AM

I like my droid more than my wife's iphone for a variety of reasons. The only thing I'm jealous about is battery life. But considering I got a very nice $250+ 3g droid on sale for $80 when all of the 4g stuff was coming out, I have no regrets not spending $300 or whatever she forked over for the iphone.

7834. iiibbb - 1/29/2012 1:52:30 AM

it's an HTC Incredible 2 for what it's worth. It really is a great phone barring a couple of quibbles. I've found some great apps for it too.

7835. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 2:05:42 AM

I have the bionic and love it.stan hated his fascinate droid and loves the new iphone. The fascinate was a bad phone but i don't think he'll ever do another droid or anything but iphone. He used the wifi hotspot on his droid to run his old iphone. I'm just glad not to hear the bitching, tho all i see of him is the top of his head.

7836. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 2:07:01 AM

Htcs reception where we live is an issue. My bionic battery life is great.

I finally replaced my first gen Razr V3 with a Pantech P8000. Works fine for me, has Android and wifi, and I buy minutes as I need them, so costs about $8/month.

7838. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 8:10:01 PM

That sounds great.

7839. arkymalarky - 1/29/2012 8:12:59 PM

Since our phones are our internet I'm the happiest I've ever been with our setup. Changes coming up in rural internet may change that, but eith two homes 1000 miles apart I imagine we'll still depend on our phones a lot.

7840. vonKreedon - 1/30/2012 6:08:35 PM

I think that the real issue with the new Google privacy regime is the sharing accross all their properties: Google, GMail, Google+, YouTube, Picasa, Google Analytics, Google Webmaster tools, Google Docs, Google Translate, Google News, Android, Google Chrome, etc.

One of the big sources of info for them is the Google Toolbar, if you're concerned about search providers tracking your personal self don't install the toolbars.

7841. arkymalarky - 1/30/2012 7:26:28 PM

I'm more concerned about the security. I don't want everything about me across all my google accounts synchronized or exploited by them or anyone else. I don't care about what I do but what I have in their hands through so many means, as you listed.
