Is Google evilly insidious and is Google+ their first open step toward world domination?
Discuss.

G+ is not useful as a means for connecting to friends.
There is no way to insulate your G+ profile from people you don't know.

So the answer is "hells no"

I love Google though... their services are great, and I am careful not to put all my proverbial eggs in their basket... I don't use their cloud, as a for instance, and I'll never use their wallet.

As a fun exercise.... try to find a Google customer service phone number or email.

8020. arkymalarky - 2/7/2014 10:55:21 PM

Right. They're trying to funnel me to g+ thru my droid. Ain't happening.

3i (or anyone else) if you download wordsmith and challenge cmoonrise I'll play you. I like it better than WWF. More like scrabble and less invasive IMO.

It's the one word swordsmith app on iPhone and droid

My nephew-from-Google (he lives in Munich) was at my place over new year, and I probed about a few of the more obvious fkucups -- and got some useful, somewhat apologetic explanations of "what the hell they were thinking".

I'm only on Google+ because he posts stuff occasionally.

8024. iiibbb - 2/10/2014 6:39:53 PM

Google+ is useful because a lot of Google services are tied to it, but just because that's how they've organized it doesn't make it useful for social networking. It's no Facebook replacement.

There has been some buzz about how Facebook is going to go extinct within the next 3 years... comparing it's user graph to Myspace. However, I'm not sure if it's believed. Myspace went away because Facebook was better. Facebook isn't going to go away until something better comes along. Google+ wasn't it. Snapchat isn't it. I'm not even sure if the downward element of this graph isn't Facebook actually starting to purge fake accounts... which they've gotten more serious about since it went public - seeing as unique and real members determines Facebook's value.

I'll happily jump ship when something else pops up, but Facebook remains the best way for me to keep in touch with my largest circle of friends/acquaintances.

"Like."

I should note that I have a large number of friends with ham licenses... so even if facebook goes extinct, we'll be there a while.

Well, I never thought hand held devices would take the place of humans but they seem to have done...we go out to eat and see nearly every table full of people "talking to" other people via their hand-helds and ignoring those sitting right across the table from them.

I don't know. I'm just so glad I downloaded flappy bird before its creator pulled it.

8030. judithathome - 2/11/2014 8:55:46 AM

Heh....get back to me when people start sleeping with their newspapers next to their pillows. A surprising number of persons, when asked, admitted they sleep with their cell phones right by their pillows...don't wanna miss a thing.

I went on facecrack reluctantly, basically for clues on what my daughters were thinking... but I confess I'm an intermittent but happy user (I am thinking of a sex change to get rid of the big-boobed lonely Ukranians etc, the advertising is heavy-handed and intrusive.)

8032. iiibbb - 2/11/2014 1:47:01 PM

There are ways to block facebook advertising. Firefox with the adblock plus addon is one of them.

8033. arkymalarky - 2/11/2014 3:20:45 PM

Facebook has some great qualities. Evidently I just have too many crappy annoying friends. I'm going to set up a fb for my job, tho. Don't know if I'll ever get back on personally. One former student got really offended that fb is how she found out her grandfather was dying. They were posting all about an ambulance and where and who. Typical rural stuff and not normally offensive, but one example of how the rural social dynamic doesn't translate well to fb in some ways.

But I did interact more personally with more people I care about on fb than any other way, ever. My 85 yo aunt loves it and Mose would not have known her without it. It was also very nice when Delight closed, which is a big reason I used it.

8034. iiibbb - 2/11/2014 4:25:39 PM

My first response to finding out via facebook that my grandparent was dying would not be offense.... just sayin'.

But I am wired different than a lot of people and I have a very "it is what it is" mentality about things that happen.

8035. judithathome - 2/11/2014 8:45:32 PM

Put yourself in the mind of a teenager...who may have been very close to her grandparent. Now imagine that GP is dying in a hospital somewhere nearby and no one thought you were important enough to come and tell you in person.

It is an example of why I am not a fan...no personal interaction is held too dear for it to be relegated to an impersonal "tweet".

It's too much "living your life" on a huge stage for others to see and judge...and "friends" are just words on a screen. I think I can live the rest of my life seeing my friends, talking to them face to face, and not rating my "popularity" in the numbers of "followers" or "retweets" I garner.
