Pardon the spam, but I have finally updated the HTML hints page. I would appreciate any and all feedback. Please post responses in Try the Mote.

And now, halfway through posting to most of the heavy traffic threads, I realize that not everyone will know what that is. Sigh. I hate it when I do that.

The HTML Hints link is on the front page, near the bottom. And on every page in the Posting Window text. I'm not going to link it because I want to make sure newbies can find it using this description.

Looks good, Cal.

789. theDiva - 1/7/2000 9:18:23 AM

Very clear and concise, well organized and readable.

One sentence is incomplete:

"Pick Up Your Toys!
The Mote's interface is pretty neat, but it is powerful. Any HTML tags you put in are included as part of the page that displays. Your mistakes are therefore "

Other than that, no problems. Very nice work.

790. dusty - 1/7/2000 9:33:07 AM

Looks great CalGal.

Lots of good new stuff.

One nit - the link that says PICK UP YOUR TOYS!!!doesn't take you there.

791. Dusty - 1/7/2000 9:53:25 AM

CalGal notes in the HTML FAQ that it is bad form to include sound in a post, even though it is possible.

Let me amend that, with something I just learned today.

If you use a command of the form:

< embed src="http://fly.hiwaay.net/~bstevens/xmas/joy1.mid" width="150" height="40" autostart="false" loop="true">

it will show up as

Note that I set autostart to False. This will not automatically play. It will play only if the reader clicks on the start button (the little triangle near the left).

Obviously, you need to replace the item in quotes with your selected file.

Now, unless someone objects immediately, I'm going to remove Message # 695

Looks very accessible to this illiterate cyber-idiot. I want to do a lot of things I can't at the moment and the new format makes that a lot easier.
Forgive me if I take a while. For a few weeks I'm flat out, but then will apply myself with diligence.

Trying again -

796. OhioSTOPAS - 1/7/2000 8:30:51 PM

Just practicing.

Let's see if I can post a link to Message # 792.

797. CalGal - 1/7/2000 11:56:31 PM

Hey, Dusty, I tried that with a sound file and it didn't work. Is it only for midi format?

798. CalGal - 1/8/2000 1:01:31 AM

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I think I caught all the corrections. I'll probably work on the format in the future, but for now I just wanted to get the basics out there.

799. Candide - 1/8/2000 7:36:00 AM

Git that goddam choon offa my screen Dusty. No hard feelings - YET,

CalGal It showed up in HTML and it opens automatically with this thread as well as "Arts and Music'.

See Dusty? I told teacher.

800. dusty - 1/8/2000 10:12:31 AM

Candide

really?

I set autostart to false.

Can you specify your brower name and version?

As well as specifying which sound you hear?
I want to track this down.

801. dusty - 1/8/2000 10:28:58 AM

CalGal

I tried with a wav file, and I think it worked. I find a better one and post it here, but I want to track down the potential problem that Candide mentioned.

802. dusty - 1/8/2000 10:30:57 AM

Candide

See Dusty? I told teacher.

??? Did you misread the host name?

804. CalGal - 1/8/2000 1:22:05 PM

Dusty,

I have a feeling it is a Java problem, not an HTML issue. Candide, what browser version do you use?

805. Dusty - 1/9/2000 1:10:16 AM

CG, so do I, hence my request for browser name and version.

806. Thoughtful - 1/9/2000 6:11:47 AM

calgal, nice summary of html basics. One thing I would like to see added under fonts & colors is a link to the color by name page which I find easier to use than hex stuff: here.
Thanks for your good work!
