9075. judithathome - 12/24/2014 8:01:57 PM Jtube: The Colbert Report: Holiday Special 9076. judithathome - 12/24/2014 10:28:49 PM Have you guys heard of this thing: The Elf On The Shelf
Sounds more like Big Brother...sure, kiddies...get used to being WATCHED 24/7.
And what about the "obstinate" kiddoes who act out and do bad things ANYHOW? They still get what they want for Christmas...that boat of "naughty or nice" sailed long ago; kids today get everything they want regardless. So bad behavior (observed by Santa via his SpyElf) gets rewarded. No pay-off for being GOOD, right?
You want to know how to make your kid behave? Interact with them, teach them ethical standards, and set a good example. Don't rely on some asshole spy-cam toy. Sheesh. 9077. wabbit - 12/30/2014 11:43:51 PM I don't get the Elf on the Shelf. When did that become a thing?
Of course, I didn't understand Teletubbies either. Thought they were weird and scary - TV for pre-verbal children. Couldn't believe parents were really relying on people they didn't know to entertain and train their offspring. Of course, if Jerry Falwell was against it, maybe it was worthwhile after all. 9078. arkymalarky - 12/30/2014 11:44:22 PM If I recall, it started in elementary schools with elementary teachers. 9079. wabbit - 12/30/2014 11:45:50 PM btw, if anyone is in Boston in the next couple weeks, the Goya exhibit at the MFA is well worth seeing. 9080. robertjayb - 1/2/2015 5:29:42 PM Recommended...
LITTLE BOOK OF A BIG YEAR, Bono's A to Z of 2014...www.u2.com
I don't know the music but admire him for his politics and for speaking up. There are references to people and events I know zip about but it is funny and serious and insightful.
After reading this I will pay more attention.
9081. robertjayb - 1/2/2015 9:56:12 PM Maybe...

possibly??? 9083. arkymalarky - 1/2/2015 10:29:25 PM the second one worked. something to read while I'm sick! 9084. judithathome - 1/12/2015 10:04:30 PM Last night I watched a fabulous docu on CNN about the life of Roger Ebert: Life Itself.
It was a hard row for me because I was so appalled by his facial wreckage but I just focused on his eyes which were more lively and expressive than before his many surgeries.
This was a fabulous piece...if you love movies and movie criticism, this is a must see! 9085. judithathome - 1/12/2015 10:12:38 PM One of the movies/documentaries Ebert mentioned was a series that started with 7 Up. It covers a group of children in England and follows up on them every 7 years. Currently, Michael Apted has released 56 Up, the "kids" having hit that short period between middle age and senior status. It's on Netflix and I'm certain the others are, too. I highly recommend this group of films...as did Ebert. We've seen the ones up to the mid 40s.
I'm hoping there's more interest in this set since Boyhood won the Golden Globe as Best picture... 9086. robertjayb - 2/3/2015 10:21:37 PM Wow!
The publisher Harper announced Tuesday that "Go Set a Watchman," a novel the Pulitzer Prize-winning author completed in the 1950s and put aside, will be released July 14. Rediscovered last fall, "Go Set a Watchman" is essentially a sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird," although it was finished earlier. The 304-page book will be Lee's second, and the first new work in more than 50 years.
The publisher plans a first printing of 2 million copies. 9087. arkymalarky - 2/4/2015 12:42:21 AM A colleague told me about that today. I'd been doing progress reports and hadn't heard. I just got that GH teaching TKAM to 9th graders. As always, they loved it. 9088. arkymalarky - 2/4/2015 12:42:40 AM Through.... 9089. robertjayb - 2/7/2015 12:41:37 AM Do not miss...
Better Call Saul (one hour) premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. on AMC. The second episode will air in the show’s regular time slot, on Monday at 10 p.m. 9090. judithathome - 2/22/2015 12:54:35 AM Robert, are you still watching? I think it's clever but it seems to be tanking in the ratings.... 9091. judithathome - 2/22/2015 1:01:49 AM Has anyone heard of Aloe Blacc? I hadn't until last night when he appeared on Bill Maher's show. His video of Wake Me Up made me cry...and trust me, it takes a LOT to make me cry these days.
Wake Me Up by Aloe Blacc 9092. judithathome - 2/22/2015 1:05:22 AM Here's another one of his that choked me up: Hello World (The World Is Ours)9093. judithathome - 2/22/2015 1:06:01 AM (okay...test) 9094. robertjayb - 2/22/2015 3:36:04 AM re: Saul. The first segment was puzzling, the second made a bit more sense. I seem to recall it was three or four shows into Breaking Bad before I began to enjoy it. I like the Saul character..I think the bit with Mike as the parking lot cashier is dumb. I haven't seen any reviews. Will search.
