9868.....Oh bugger. Miles. Call myself an informatician.

My husband tells me you're one of those made-up persons from the evil internet.
You couldn't possibly have any information, or the brains to make up the title of informatician.

10148. Ulgine Barrows - 7/3/2004 4:43:06 PM

catching up

Absensia, happy birthday, you beautiful summery lady!

10149. Ulgine Barrows - 7/3/2004 4:43:26 PM

wistfullarky, I wish my son could learn from you. From what I read here, you're one class act.

It sounds like you're struggling between the 'it is all for the children' and 'I will make a living at this profession or leave it'.

Sweetie, you have to look after yourself.

Did he really say that? If he did, then he didn't have the brains to google the word "informatician" before making such a statement.

10151. Absensia - 7/3/2004 11:50:02 PM

G'day all! I hope you're all having a wonderful Sunday. People have been setting off fireworks since Friday night and the cats have gone into seclusion.

Thank you, Ulgine. Today is my mother's birthday and my niece's birthday is next week. We have several June and July b'days in my family.

Res :
Woden and I will be lazing on the National Mall tomorrow and watching fireworks.

Yeah, I always knew you were the type of people who spend their free time hanging around in malls.

My husband tells me you're one of those made-up persons from the evil internet.

Hey, I'm uneasy enough thinking that he may be reading what I write -- I actually prefer that he should think me imaginary.

But yes, I am an informaticien -- there is no succinct way of saying this in English, which is an inferior language.

Laminate is nice and very popular in areas with heavy usage but an old-fashioned oiled wood floor will only grow nicer with age.

I'm getting all torn and conflicted as to what to put on the floor of the new bedroom, over the concrete slab. Laminate would be the simplest option. My instinct was carpet, but French people throw up their hands in horror at the idea. Must be a cultural issue.

10155. neato - 7/4/2004 5:33:32 PM

Paint the concrete? Polish the concrete - v. groovy

10156. Macnas - 7/4/2004 5:43:36 PM

Surely your wife will decide?

10157. alistairConnor - 7/4/2004 6:01:28 PM

hmm. As previously discussed, the surface of the concrete is not of good enough quality to polish or paint -- I had thought of waxing it, but it won't work.

10158. PelleNilsson - 7/4/2004 6:02:27 PM

Wall-to-wall carpeting is a very anglo-saxon concept.

10159. Macnas - 7/4/2004 6:14:11 PM

You can buy floor sealer/finish that is self levelling, a bit expensive but very effective. It is, I think, of the 2 part epoxy type, so it will reek while it it is curing.
The finish is, however, very good.

Throw some mats and rugs down and Roberts your mothers brother. Oh but make sure you rout and grout any cracks, unless you wish to see your expensive floor disappear into your foundations.

10160. Macnas - 7/4/2004 6:23:41 PM

There are some examples that I have used here.

10161. PelleNilsson - 7/4/2004 6:51:41 PM

I think laminate or a thin snap-on parquet on top of a soft fiber mat would be the best.

10162. Macnas - 7/4/2004 6:53:16 PM

Or straw, have you considered straw?

10163. Magoseph - 7/4/2004 11:13:40 PM

How about sciure, Mac?

Carpeting is an out of fashion concept here too, Pelle. The parquet is a good idea.

10164. wonkers2 - 7/4/2004 11:18:51 PM

Did you consider bamboo? Somebody told me recently that its the latest thing in flooring. Apparently it's very hard and durable.

10165. Macnas - 7/4/2004 11:27:12 PM

Bamboo eh? Wonder how it's fixed, it can't be levelled properly I imagine, unless it's processed in some way, perhaps with a backing material as well, hmm. If it works I think its a great idea. Bamboo is one hell of a renewable resource.

10166. Magoseph - 7/4/2004 11:50:05 PM

Bamboo
