Ali, I remember my father going every day to one of the local cafés (there were three in Laudun) to have “une partie de boules” as he called the game of petanque. He had one “pastis” (Pernod) before playing and one after, the most I ever saw him drinking.

Something like that.

Keoni bashed in the side of his new truck.

The new roof goes on Tuesday.

Our insurnace rates for home AND automobile will no doubt go way up shortly.

How did bash in the side of his truck, Juds? He's fine, I suppose?

10233. judithathome - 7/9/2004 6:07:43 AM

He made a too-short turn and crunched into a pole. Losing his side vision, I guess.

He is fine except for a bruised ego.

Guess what happened today in my little village nest of politicos? For the past month, the city adminstrator has been campaigning to have our city council vote to fire our beloved police chief. The Mayor had had enough this morning and fired the city administrator, sent everyone home from our little city hall, and changed all the locks on the doors. He has the only key.

He also moved the vote to fire the police chief off the agenda for Tuesday night's council meeting. And nothing can be added to the agenda because today was the deadline.

I love that guy! He's got my vote as Mayor for Life!

wow, wabbit, your version of tubing on the Delaware looks calming. The version I had, was at a faster pace - being dragged behind a ski boat.

Somebody mentioned bringing a camera/camcorder, guess it's a good idea we didn't.

10236. Magoseph - 7/9/2004 5:46:38 PM

Good morning, Ulgine, it was fun to follow you from one thread to the other while doing the nytimes crossword puzzle.

Good morn, Magoseph, another sleepless night, here.

Yesterday I got a huge-ass retaining wall installed for $100 bucks. It was the deal of July!

Buildings are going up a block over. Excavators with bobcats. Huge limestone rocks to be ahuled off at some expense. I struck a deal.

The neighborhood kids were enchanted with the earth mover, and the operator's skill.

That's great, sweetie, sometimes we win something here and there. That reminds me that the township will have our driveway repaved because the satinary district's trucks had to back in and out of it while fixing the sewer lines on the other side of the road. Too much rain this spring got us a rejuvenated driveway.

Alistair, Mago, my partner thinks he's a bit of a linguist. He said "escagacer" means to go around annoying snails.

10240. Magoseph - 7/9/2004 6:59:28 PM

Poppies

10241. Magoseph - 7/9/2004 7:04:58 PM

Neato, that's interesting. The term means to annoy now. However, it could come from old Provençal. Maybe the escargots were called escagaces in ancient times. I'll have to check on that point.

10242. Magoseph - 7/9/2004 7:10:08 PM

It is also spelled "escagasser". One of the old aunts in the family may be able to tell me more about this word. Vraiment, je ne sais pas pourqoi ce mot m'escagace.

10243. neato - 7/9/2004 7:12:22 PM

He was jesting - because of the word having a bit of snail in it (as well as annoy)

10244. Magoseph - 7/9/2004 8:03:09 PM

pourqoi=pourquoi, darn it!

Oh, really, he was kidding? Tell him it's not nice to have you kid a humorless person.

10245. judithathome - 7/10/2004 6:46:55 AM

With the roofers coming on Tuesday, and all the noise they will make, I fear my little old dog will go bananas. So I'm telling him he's going to day camp. I'll deliver him to the kennel and have his shot that is due given him and have them bathe and dip him and then trim his nails. I'll pick him up around 5pm and he'll be rested and miss all the hoopla of the shingles being nailed on and the old roof being tossed onto the ground.

In fact, if I didn't need to be here, I think I might go off to a day camp and miss all the clatter, myself.

10246. OhioSTOPAS - 7/10/2004 9:32:43 PM

Hello, everyone! The Ohios are back from our Boston-Connecticut-New York road trip. I'm glad to be home, and my sore butt is glad to be out of the car. (You know you're out of shape when your BUTT is out of shape . . .)

So did I miss anything? Is Kerry ever going to pick a VP?

10247. PelleNilsson - 7/11/2004 12:40:23 AM

What kind of car do you have Ohio? One with metal seats?
