10534. Ms. No - 7/26/2004 12:45:56 AM Woo-hooo! Had a great weekend. I'm exhausted, but it was a good time anyway.
The Squirrell came over for about 3 hours on Saturday while my brother and sil were at some pre-natal class or other. I was quite pleased to discover that I had several child appropriate videos on hand as well as some books and even juice in the fridge rather than just water, liquor and diet soda.
Billietta didn't jump on him and they actually played together although she would look at me kind of nervously every once in awhile "Uh...he's poking me, you know. Do I have to let him do that?" But she never left his side. I found later it's because he gave her a french fry from his Happy Meal within the first two minutes of his visit.
Later I set him up with a body pillow on the living room floor so he could watch TV. I came back to discover that Billietta had crept onto it and crowded him off entirely.
I did not paint --- seemed not a good task to engage in while babysitting --- but I did make up another batch of potatoes to take to a barbeque that evening. Billie got to come along to that as well and had a good time playing with my friends' dog and the child of another couple.
My dog has now discovered that small people are good to hang around --- they're always eating something and they like to share. I just can't get over how good she was. Sage (friends' daughter) is barely 2 and she's considerably smaller than my nephew but Billie didn't knock her over once and she appeared to have no problems at all playing "Choo-Choo" with the tyke even though it seemed to result in quite a bit of tail-pulling.
She's such a good dog.
10535. Ms. No - 7/26/2004 12:47:54 AM Fortunately she was exhausted by Saturday and so was content to sleep all day Sunday while I was on the set. I'm happy to help out with friends' productions but they really didn't need me yesterday except for about an hour when they were shooting the bloody stuff.
Still, even though the time would have been better utilized at home, it was really good to be out with people. I knew I'd been something of a hermit over the last year, but not until the last two weeks did I realize the extent of it. I saw people this weekend who thought I'd left the city.
Made a couple of new connections as well and have been invited to see a special screening of one of the world's worst movies ever: Showgirls.
Personally I thought it was great satire. Apparently, that was not the intent of the filmmakers. Oh well. It seems the film is earning a kind of cult following not totally unlike that of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. We shall see. Whatever happens I'm going with cool people.

Klaus used to be okay with the little ones but since he's aged, he's become a tad grouchy so I keep a close watch on him when any kiddos are around.

I guess they will be higher next year since the schools and the libraries will need more money. Some federal entitlements based on the percentage of low-income families have been eliminated this year. Our school districts do not qualify anymore for competitive grants available to others a few miles away. These grants require 30 per cent of students in a district to receive free or reduced-cost lunches. Less than 2 per cent of families with children ages 5-17 have an income below the poverty level here.
The real-estate boom building has driven the poor out of here, luckily with plenty of money since their modest homes were bought for the most part, just for the land.
10547. arkymalarky - 7/27/2004 4:29:54 AM Sales tax is killing the working poor here, and we're one of the poorest states in the country. We have something like the fifth highest sales tax in the US. People in poverty are much worse off now. A number districts, especially in the Delta, have over 95% F&R lunches, and the same ones are generally about that % African-American.
That type of district filed the education lawsuit that created such a stir here, and for "winning" it, they find themselves consolidated to another district and disappearing as a separate entity with their own school board and local representation. An old guy makes these unique ones with different types of handles. He has some with antique door knobs, glass ones and beautiful china ones.
