Alistair,

But the forward (or angular, actually) movement under wind power, even at that amatuer level is something, sort of timeless, don't you think?. With rudder in hand (or is that the tiller?) I think of ancient peoples tooling around the Med discovering Crete or something. I feel like I'm sharing an ancient human experience I guess.

Motorboats are fun too, but a completely different mindset, and I have precious little experience there too.

Maybe you'll have time to say good-bye to us before you leave tomorrow.

10923. anomie - 8/17/2004 7:03:33 AM

Alistair,

We can only hope for a trip report...and a good and happy vacation for you too.

10924. Magoseph - 8/17/2004 7:17:27 AM

I always appreciate thread hosts. I think of you as wizards with special knowledge who can make things disappear.

I deleted two posts today instead of transferring them to the Inferno as I intended to do--not much of a wizard, I'm afraid.
As for finding you a single brunette with no kids, Ano, I'll ask around here and over there.

10925. anomie - 8/17/2004 7:55:52 AM

"afraid", "deleted", "Inferno" all in the same sentence, hidden cryptic clues, just scraping the surface of your real powers.

..and now I'm just being silly.
Ever since I found out this whole effort is done by volunteers, I've been very appreciative, and maybe we don't mention it enough.

We should role the credits occasionally...have nominations...give awards...make speeches.

We need a committee. An awards thread. A host.

Hmmm, who will be voted poster of the year?

10926. anomie - 8/17/2004 7:57:46 AM

Poster of the decade! Bring back the oldies!

...most of them.

10927. neato - 8/17/2004 8:53:30 AM

Anomie, I too am glad you are back, please please tell us about Charleston, anything, ups or downs.

10928. anomie - 8/17/2004 9:08:18 AM

Neato,

Thanks. I'll try to ramp up this gregarious mood as the weekend approaches and maybe post some pics and make some comments. Charleston is a lovely city in some ways.

I'm glad to see you too. And I hope you dig up some more pics. I love the old ones, but new ones are good too.

10929. arkymalarky - 8/17/2004 10:35:12 AM

Jen,
What did you say to the person?

I only went so far as to ask if she really would do that, not to the point of saying "I'll take it." I didn't name the pig and haven't met it, so if she can live with its fate I guess I'll leave her to her conscience. ;-)

I have five preps and have for years, but in a small school it was always a trade-off for small class sizes and less grading. That's really not the case any more. Bob had five last year and got dropped back to four and my best friend at work has been lamenting five preps for years.

I have had six, back when we only had six classes, so I had no prep period. I call that my Nightmare Year. It's also the year I got married in October and was pregnant by February, had over 170 students, had never taught any of the classes before that year, and sponsored the yearbook and junior class. I think I had some kind of death wish going or something.

10930. arkymalarky - 8/17/2004 10:41:46 AM

Welcome back, Anomie!

And I'm with Wombat--what happened to Concerned? I thought he left a bit miffed at us but hoped he would return.

Hope you have a great break, Alistair.

10931. alistairconnor - 8/17/2004 7:02:48 PM

I didn't name the pig and haven't met it, so if she can live with its fate I guess I'll leave her to her conscience.

You people are such hypocrites. If you can't kill and eat an animal you're on first name terms with, then you shouldn't be eating animals.

10932. PelleNilsson - 8/17/2004 7:56:15 PM

Have a nice trip, alistair.

10933. Macnas - 8/17/2004 8:00:27 PM

Say hello to the pigs for me.

10934. alistairconnor - 8/17/2004 8:27:31 PM

... you talking about the English?

New Zealanders know how to deal with them. I never met an Englishman I wouldn't eat.

10935. Macnas - 8/17/2004 9:29:51 PM

The English? Never.

I couldn't handle the indigestion.

10936. Magoseph - 8/17/2004 10:10:02 PM

Well, Ali, have a great trip and please drive carefully.

10937. Macnas - 8/17/2004 10:28:28 PM

Alistairs already so far to the left he's going to end up in a ditch.

10938. marjoribanks - 8/17/2004 11:22:56 PM

Not that I'm one to gloat or be indiscreet.

However, I must rub it in that I have seen current photos of our cyber-pair, Woden and A-5.

Now, till this point, I have felt - rather proprietarily - that our old pal Res was the catch. Not just in this case, but in whichever eventuality saw him paired up.

Now, um, I've seen the photos, the visual evidence.

Um again, it's Res who is the really lucky one in this coupling. Let's not be mistaken or make any bones about it.

Kudos to the couple, they're a lovely match in all ways.

10939. judithathome - 8/18/2004 12:14:53 AM

Is there any way in which you could share this evidence...we want to see, too!

10940. marjoribanks - 8/18/2004 12:27:49 AM

Nope.
