Jenerator,

Good luck.

(But what course of study takes 7 years to earn a Master's?)

11173. Jenerator - 8/25/2004 1:22:36 AM

I'm pursuing a Ph.D as well (Theology).

What will you do once you're fluent in maje mai bhas?

11174. marjoribanks - 8/25/2004 4:38:16 AM

No, maje mai bhas (MY mother tongue).

YOUR mother tongue, tuje mai bhas is Texican.

The course I am contemplating has no particular practical applications at all. It's very part-time, and just for fun.

11175. Jenerator - 8/25/2004 5:15:24 AM

So what is tuje mai bhas? Hindi?

I think you'll have a great time, and I know you'll do well.

11176. judithathome - 8/25/2004 6:09:27 AM

maje mai bhas(MY mother tongue). That is Marj's mother tongue.

tuje mai bhas is Texican or in other words, YOUR mother tongue, Jen.

Hi Judith.

Mago, I don't have HBO or Showtime.

I am thinking about getting rid of my phone ($25), and Earthlink,($30), and getting highspeed internet cable for $30. I'll need to buy a new laptop first, or clean up my old XP machine. I have trip for work in Sept, so maybe after that.

11178. arkymalarky - 8/25/2004 8:10:54 AM

I'd do that in a heartbeat if we had the option out here.

11179. anomie - 8/25/2004 8:34:57 AM

Arky, you don't get cable? Howbout satellite?

I'll let you know how mine goes. I'll have to get serious about firewalls and Windows updates, I guess.

11180. arkymalarky - 8/25/2004 11:18:55 AM

I have satellite but I can't get dsl, according to what I looked into.

11181. Ulgine Barrows - 8/25/2004 3:55:56 PM

It took forever for us to get cable in our neighborhood.

I haven't heard good things about DSL, but anything's better than dial-up!

11182. Macnas - 8/25/2004 5:00:50 PM

I'd have to agree there. My work connection is ptretty fast, being a broadband type, but my home dialup is woefully slow.

So, I did the sums and took an average of 4 bills and worked out how much getting broadband at home would cost. It works out like my most expensive bill all the time, so I didn't bother with it.

11183. Jenerator - 8/25/2004 9:14:58 PM

Judith,

So if I am asking marjori what is YOUR mother tongue, wouldn't I use tuje? Clearly maje means "my" not "Texican".

Similar to French:

Mon ami (my friend)

Ton ami (your friend.

11184. Macnas - 8/25/2004 9:21:06 PM

That's a bit familiar isn't it?

11185. jayackroyd - 8/25/2004 10:25:34 PM

anomie--

Does getting rid of your telephone mean you're going to VOIP?

11186. judithathome - 8/25/2004 10:39:55 PM

Yes Jen. It just looked weird. And I thought you knew what he spoke since you guys go way back. ;-)

11187. Jenerator - 8/25/2004 11:10:26 PM

Well, Marjori is a complex person, I never want to assume anything with him.

Btw, what are ya doing this weekend?

11188. marjoribanks - 8/25/2004 11:26:31 PM

Yes, Jenerator had it right.

Maje mai bhas is Konkani, an unsung (except by Konkanis) language which is robust, earthy, musical, and full of folk wisdom and twists.

Trivia: it is the only language I can think of that is routinely written in as many as five discrete scripts (including the one we are utilizing now).

11189. judithathome - 8/25/2004 11:36:20 PM

This weekend we're going to a matinee play downtown...you might enjoy this one, too. It's called God's Man In Texas and is based on W A Criswell. After the play, to which 8 of us are going, we're off for some home cookin' at the Dixie Cafe.

One of the people going with us is the sister of the Texas author Dan Jenkins. I hope she has his sense of humor! (She's a friend of friend.)

11190. robertjayb - 8/26/2004 12:29:22 AM

Ah, Dan Jenkins. Two lines of his (well, his characters) that I savor:

"Ain't nothing in this world that's dead solid perfect." (Dead Solid Perfect)

"Women can't help it. It's born in 'em. Sooner or later they gotta bitch about something that don't make a shit." (Semi-Tough)

11191. judithathome - 8/26/2004 12:50:47 AM

Did you ever read Baja Oklahoma, Robert?
