Arky/Magoseph,

Ah, I think you are on to something.

I also see the post-Castro-Cuba topic as a component of a larger discussion of the Americas, and the ambivalent attitude of U.S. citizens toward it.

How's this for a thread title:

Manifesting Destiny -- the problems, possibilities, and peculiarities of the new New World.

11952. Magoseph - 11/6/2004 12:35:24 AM

Wabbit will tel you if 'Manifesting Destiny -- the problems, possibilities, and peculiarities of the new New World" will work, Elliott. I know we had a little trouble to fit in what I originally wanted. Wabbit came up with something that was right for me.

11953. judithathome - 11/6/2004 1:07:42 AM

Hi, guys...just dropping in to say hello. Still with company and we are out daily boosting the economy...I found BOOTS yesterday! On sale!

11954. ElliottRW - 11/6/2004 1:13:57 AM

Magoseph,

Sure, it might be too verbose. But at this point I can't change the name without Wabbit's help anyway.

What I was really asking I was really asking for is feedback on the semantic content of the title.

You see, what I'm shooting for is something that evokes the special nature of the United States's often difficult, often politically charged relations with other American states. It's a slightly different target than a thread about "Latinos" and it is a somewhat narrower target than one about "the Americas". Does this title do the job? I dunno. After reading it a few times it seems a bit goofy.

I'm also looking for advice on how to get people talking about political corruption, immigration, oil, drugs, crime, even terrorism in this context. I thought the Cuba topic would be a good one, but I'm wondering if it is looking a bit too far forward. Should I start with something more current, more here-and-now?

11955. arkymalarky - 11/6/2004 1:24:57 AM

If the title fits length-wise (as opposed to "lengthwise") it sounds great to me, and whatever you want to start off with that you think has discussion possibilities would be good, since it will morph pretty quickly to various subjects under the topic.

Speaking of which, a Mexican student (as in Mexican citizen) said there was a video of Castro's fall, but I hadn't heard of it or seen it. I wonder if someone directed him to a fake one or if I'm just out of the loop.

Our field trip went well and everyone had fun, but after not sleeping last night and walking all day I'm flat worn out. Good thing it's Friday.

I have "Fidel," a 2002 documentary in my netflix list. Most of the several reviews tend toward dismissing it as hero worship. But this one is sort of in the middle and makes some valid points, metninks:

Fidel the enemy. Or Fidel the Hero. It really depends upon who you ask. This documentary shows a perspective not often represented by the mainstream media and i apporeciated it very much. The American media only talks about the lack of democratic elections and human rights abuses the Cuban government has committed, but it never talks about the fact that everyone in that country can read, has healthcare, no one is homeless, they're competitive with the first world in science (spec. bio-engineering) sports and the arts. This shows the other side that has been kept away from the American public. Hmmm, i wonder why? Maybe it's becuase we might start to demand universal healthcare, more money for education, affordable housing, job security, a decent retirement, safe neighborhoods...all of which this "evil" socialist country has. They may not have the democracy that we SAY they should have, but hey, we don't either! According to the American people, Gore should be president. But, according to the elitist Electoral College system, he isn't!!! Que Viva Fidel! Mabuhay ang Socialismo!!! Imperialismo Ibagsak!!!

I think Cuba is part of the Hispanic problem and should be included the framework of an Hispanic thread.

BTW, Elliott, thanks for doing this.

Fitzy from All Things International;

I met a girl who sang the blues and I asked her for some happy news but she just smiled and turned away, I went down to the sacred store where I'd heard the music years before but the man there said the music wouldn't play and in the streets the children screamed, the lovers cried, and the poets dreamed but not a word was spoken, the church bells all were broken and the three men I admire most, the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train for the coast, the day, the music, died, and they were singin...

11961. robertjayb - 11/6/2004 3:35:47 AM

...bye, bye miss american pie...

11962. tonedef - 11/6/2004 7:37:18 AM

Just thought I'd drop in and say hi to moties and former fraysters. I used to post as tonysa in the Fray, and wasted (or maybe not) many happy hours of what should have been billable time, enthusing over obscure science fiction movies with mondaugen (when I wasn't baiting him over his obscure taste in music), and discussing the fine points of salvation theology marshame and Vic. Was overjoyed a couple of years ago to stumble into the Mote and find many of you still here and thriving, but the demands of parenting, a busy law practice, and teaching part time now seem to take precedence over socialising on-line. I've been lurking a bit through the election. Anyway, nice to see a lot of familiar names (and attitudes!), and if y'all have been considering emigrating north of the 49th over the last few days - you'll be welcome!

two posts in two days and both of them doubles. Why does my iMac keep doing that?

11965. Frankster - 11/6/2004 9:32:06 AM

Why does my iMac keep doing that?

You watch that talk about Imac's tonedef. I just got one, and you know what they say: "A bad carpenter blames his tools"

Hee-hee!

Welcome back!

...I better get some shuteye. 'night anyone.

Oh, sorry 'bout the "e" upstream Christin. :( See what being away does to one's mind ?

11966. wabbit - 11/6/2004 4:33:13 PM

Hey tonedef, good to see you! The double post happens if you refresh the page you just posted in - if you use the VCR buttons that won't happen.

ElliottRW, that title will fit if it is the title and subtitle, i.e.
Manifesting Destiny
the problems, possibilities, and peculiarities of the new New World

11967. ElliottRW - 11/6/2004 4:50:49 PM

Wabbit,

Right, that's what I had in mind. Can you go ahead and change the title for me, please?

11968. wabbit - 11/6/2004 4:53:48 PM

Done.

11969. judithathome - 11/6/2004 6:08:56 PM

Fraaaaaaank! Great to see you...and you and Seadate were willing "dusters" just like those kids who painted Tom Sawyer's fence! ;-)

11970. arkymalarky - 11/6/2004 6:22:38 PM

Hey all!

Good to see you here, Tone! Hope you'll squeeze in a bit of time for us--and FRANK TOO!

Judith, you would love Old Washington. Lots of antebellum homes, buildings, antiques galore. We watched weaving, went to a blacksmith's shop, a printer, the weapons museum, dipped candles--all kinds of stuff. They have a Christmas event and this weekend is Civil War Days (what we did). The kids watched artillery, did a little infantry drill, learned how people got by in the South with no imports, etc. They also have the Jonquil festival in March.

Here they are: Old Washington Tour of Town

And their calendar of events: Calendar

I've been several times, but never when it was all open and we could look in the houses. I'd love to go to the Christmas evening. If you and Keoni would ever be interested in going, we'd love you to stay with us, even if we couldn't go. It's just about an hour from here.

They also have a great place nearby that I've never been able to find, but I've had one bar of their soap, and it's WONDERFUL: < a href="http://www.oldcolumbus.com/" target="new">Old Columbus We didn't have time or energy to look for it after the field trip yesterday.
