That reminds me of another real obscure fave I haven't heard since about that time. Probably most people have heard the Surfari's 'Wipeout' which was a big hit in 1963.

IMO, 'Wipeout' was nowhere near as good as another instrumental the Surfaris released a year or two later, called 'Scattershield' which I once had on 45 as a kid & lost when I was about 15.

A scattershield, btw, is a piece of metal installed between a race car's transmission and clutch and the passenger compartment to protect the driver from shrapnel in case either one should basically explode under the stress of racing.

My formative influence was my elder brother's stack of singles, vintage about 1965-66. Mostly British stuff : the Hollies, the Tremeloes, the Bee Gees etc... one standout, The Lovin' Spoonful : Summer in the City. Great song.

Speaking of music... anyone remember The Shaggs

12658. concerned - 12/11/2004 10:34:51 AM

The Shaggs....weren't they Austin Powers', er I mean Wiggins' group?

I must have missed them, but I'll keep an eye out for their CD reissue.

12659. iiibbb - 12/11/2004 5:01:17 PM

I own them only because they are the single most horrible thing I have ever heard in my life... everyone should have a copy.

Okay, killing time playing that 20Q game and this is simply amazing:

Uncommon Knowledge about a tobacco plant

Is it straight? I say Probably.
Is it manufactured? I say Yes.
Is it hot? I say Yes.
Can you walk on it? I say Yes.
Does it live in water? I say Probably.
Is it a herbivore? I say Yes.
Is it shaped like a hot dog? I say Yes.
Does it have hooves? I say Probably.
Do you use it in public? I say Doubtful.
Is it used in travel? I say Yes.
Does it store information? I say Yes.
Does it have a long tail? I say Probably.
Does it have four legs? I say Probably.
Is it useful? I say No.
Can you use it 24 hours a day? I say No.
Can it climb? I say Probably.

I'd say a lot of that stuff is VERY uncommon; farcical, in fact. Does it have hooves? ha!

Off dinner in Midtown Brazilian restaurant, next to Lincoln Center to see Nutcracker, then hang out at Rockefeller Plaza by tree, then SOHO district for late night libations. I love Manhattan.

12662. judithathome - 12/11/2004 6:30:28 PM

Whoa, that beats what we're doing tonight...going to a graduation ceremony where our crazy friend is getting his Masters degree. I wouldn't miss it but your stuff sounds way more fun!

12663. PsychProf - 12/11/2004 6:59:34 PM

Thanks Judith...my sons and their babes will be with us.

12664. arkymalarky - 12/11/2004 7:01:48 PM

Sounds wonderful, PP!

I will be reading and typing....

Mose is coming home tomorrow, and I hope I'm finished by then, but it will probably be the middle of the week at the earliest.

12665. Absensia - 12/12/2004 6:48:20 AM

The 20Q game is fun to play. It is at least distracting and takes my mind off one of our family's holiday traditions: "Let's see who can cause the most stress this year!" The fun and games have already started. All in all, I'd rather be somewhere warm, though probably not Iraq...even though it might seem like home right now! Haha.

12666. alistairConnor - 12/12/2004 11:43:51 PM

Roll with the punches Abs... a brighter day will dawn.

12667. judithathome - 12/13/2004 12:34:54 AM

We do family dysfunction on Thanksgiving and save Christmas for just the two of us...it's easier that way. No stress on Christmas whewn it's just Keoni and me. And Klaus, of course. ;-)

12668. robertjayb - 12/13/2004 12:49:24 AM

Arky, is this the sort of thing you are dealing with in Arkansas?

Texas public school districts with 2,000 students or fewer would be consolidated into larger county districts within five years under a bill state Rep. Fred Brown said he would push during the upcoming legislative session.
.................................................

A pre-filed bill authored by Brown calls for the merger of all Texas school districts into 254 districts drawn along county lines. But Brown said he plans to file an amendment requiring only districts with 2,000 students or fewer to consolidate. It was not clear what would happen to counties that have a mix of district populations higher and lower than 2,000.

12669. Jenerator - 12/13/2004 1:27:34 AM

Speaking of school, we had our work Christmas party this weekend and spouses/significant others weren't invited. It was horrible.

12670. judithathome - 12/13/2004 1:28:25 AM

Why did you go, then? I'd have said "see ya' after the holidays" and gone home to my hubs.

12671. Jenerator - 12/13/2004 1:36:00 AM

They hired him to take pictures.;-)

12672. judithathome - 12/13/2004 1:37:06 AM

Then he was there, right? So why was the party horrible?

12673. arkymalarky - 12/13/2004 3:23:56 AM

Robert,

Sort of. They had to back off a proposal to consolidate high schools of under 1500 students, but people never read the bill (over 200 pages) which actually centralized control of public education under the executive. There's no way something like that would fly here. I stay in touch with a woman from Houston that PFAW hooked me up with, and fly-by-night charter schools seem to be a potential problem there. They may become one here, but we're too rural to be worth much trouble.

When I get done I'll send you a copy of what I'm doing.

All they'd have to do is schedule a "work party" on the weekend--forget inviting spouses--to have a huge flop around here.
