13139. Ms. No - 1/10/2005 7:43:41 PM The rain continues to fall here --- as does the hillside next to our office building. The mudslide has completely barricaded the dumpsters - 3.5 feet deep. Fortunately we got some sandbags out last Friday to sort of keep things in check otherwise the front door of the building would be inaccessible. As it stands the sandbag barricade got shoved a good 8 feet by the mudslide and it's only going to get worse since it's supposed to keep pouring through Thursday.
We need the water, but not all at once. There's nowhere for it to go. All the canyons are closed, most of the freeways have serious flooding, the train tracks for the metro system are washed out in two places and hillsides and homes are collapsing all over the place.
It's warmer in the last couple of days than it has been, though. That's a welcome respite. 13140. Ms. No - 1/10/2005 7:45:34 PM Our weather is making the news in Wisconsin. That's pathetic. Wisconsin has real weather. If we were used to any kind of weather at all we'd be better prepared for the rain. Granted, there's an awful lot of it. I got a "weather station" for Christmas. It give the air pressure in hectoPascal but I have to mentally translate to mm Hg to understand.
By the way, most countries measure wind speed in miles per hour or km per hour. These figures are meaningless to me because here we use meter per second. I don't really know if this an example of Swedish eccentricity or if it is another example of us using an international standard that everybody else ignores, such as today's date 05-01-11. 13155. HectoPascal? I've never seen that used anywhere. But no, I tell a lie, the weather station we use here on site, a Vaisala that I installed many years ago measures barometric pressure in hPa. And wind speed in mph if I recall.
International standards seem to be applied on an "as suits" basis. It is only now, on the 20th of this month actually, that we are changing our road speed signs to km per hour. 13156.
