Thanks!

what is it that you hope she won't find out, that we know about your engagement here at the Mote?

This is a running joke of ours, "I love my sweetie...and I love you too, hon."

We've been engaged for quite some time, however we just got the ring. The stone was an heirloom last worn by Res's mother. I changed my mind about the setting a few times, and we had considered a few with white gold and smaller stones. Ultimately we decided that we didn't want to buy any new diamonds because of the atrocities associated with the diamond trade. It's telling that when you look into buying a 'clean' diamond, there's very little information available. I've recently ran across an online discussion on this topic where different sides were presented, and after reading it, I'm doubly glad of our decision.

Here's a picture of the ring

The sidestones came from a ring that my grandmother gave me a long time ago. It was a terribly ugly ring with a large emerald in the center, surrounded by diamonds in a "cocktail ring" style. I'm going to have the rest of the stones from that ring made into a necklace.

Congratulations, pals.

1) If you want diamonds, simply come to India. I promise you that you will get (a) a clean one and (b) will save the cost of your tickets in the bargain.

2) Re: The New Yorker. I am the only subscriber to the Magazine in the Konkan, and get regular letters requesting me to report on the state of the magazine (excellent, though two weeks late) when it arrives on the hillside. It is a kind of Yank-culture-NYC-mainlined lifeline. I have read it religiously for twenty years, and like it better now than before though the cartoon quality has regressed a bit. It's simply the best English-language weekly in the world, possibly also the best managazine period. What it was? Bah. Focus on what it still is.

Congratulations, Res and Woden!

Posts 13815 and 13816 from my son’s trip will be moved to Escapes later along with others—here they interfered with the conversation.

Morning exchange at our house:
“I’m going to shave now and then, I’ll give you two kisses.”
“What, are you doling them out now?
“Those are special for today”
“Oh, why?”
Hello and Happy Valentine Day to all!

Congrats to Res and Woden...best of everything to you, and a long lifetime to enjoy such.

Magos, two kisses are a good sign for waking up in the morning. ;-)

Wonderful news res & woden. Beautiful ring on such a lovely young hand too!

May you both enjoy a long life together full of happiness, and quiet moments.

13833. arkymalarky - 2/15/2005 2:49:47 AM

I love the ring.

Happy Valentine's Day to all the Moterheads!

Banks:

Having seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom many times, and, hence, being forewarned, I know that people who go looking for diamonds in your fine nation sometimes end up strapped to a bed rack and lowered into boiling lava after Mola Ram rips their heart out. Plus, if my memory serves me correctly, one may be served eyeball soup and chilled monkey brains immediately beforehand.

Possibilities such as these tend to attract a man's full attention and, in any case, may not be fully covered by our current health plans. Regrettably, we may have to decline your most gracious offer under these circumstances, but Woden and I do appreciate the thought.

Say hi to the Mrs. for us both.

Regds,

A-5

13835. uzmakk - 2/15/2005 2:01:40 PM

Congratulations, A-5. That is a fine looking young hand. I was under the impression that you were a bit more on the crusty side. Of course that could still be the case.

13836. Magoseph - 2/15/2005 6:29:59 PM

Hello, Moterheads--please don't mind me calling you that--after all, Arky does. So what did you do last night?

13837. uzmakk - 2/15/2005 7:31:50 PM

I watched digital future for 45 minutes and then went fencing. Levy was not as interesting as the prof. from U Toronto. Those academics are a weird looking bunch.

13838. woden - 2/15/2005 8:55:32 PM

Thank you all for your good wishes.

I would love to go to India!

13839. judithathome - 2/15/2005 9:18:41 PM

Last night Keoni and I went to a romatic dining spot in our fair city...Sonic! We had foot-long cheese coneys and tater tots and shared a Cherry Chocolate Sweetheart shake. It was a beautiful night out...complete with carhop and corny music. We loved it!

Meanwhile, we watched couples come and go at the expensive Italian place with singing waiters across the street from our little dive...and knowing they were paying $50 for a meal made our little $9 foray even better. We tipped the carhop $5 because it was just so much fun to see his expression....

(We have a tradition of big-tipping carhops at Sonic...)

13840. Magoseph - 2/15/2005 9:25:29 PM

So, I take it that Keoni took you to Sonic for your date, am I right?

13841. Magoseph - 2/15/2005 9:34:50 PM

I mean, Judith, your very first date, when you were teen-agers.

13842. judithathome - 2/15/2005 9:51:06 PM

I didn't know Keoni when I was teenager. Actually, the site where this particular Sonic is right now is where another restaurant was when Keoni and I were dating 24 years ago...in the parking lot of that restaurant, we kissed in public for the first time. And as a matter of fact, my son was driving by that night but he was there about 20 minutes before the deed. ;-)

13843. thoughtful - 2/15/2005 9:57:40 PM

We celebrated on sun night instead, exchanged gifts, cards, candlelit dinner at home, cole porter cd, wine, roasted turkey breast with mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans with tomatoes and salad with balsamic vinegrette. He didn't want dessert, but I dove into one of the champagne chocolate truffles he'd given me...made my toes curl.

Plans to go to that fancy romantic restaurant have been postponed due to my recent digestive issues. We'll save that for another day.
