Obviously, Clinton had too heavy a schedule since his operation in September. I really would not want anything to happen to him in my lifetime—I kind of became attached to the person, ridiculous as that sentiment may be.

International Women's Day

I had to steal this from Hobbes.

14043. PelleNilsson - 3/8/2005 10:29:50 PM

Who stole it from Katharina.

Last night, the county police finally arrested the motorcyclists who roamed around scaring the residents at night, idling in front of their house for no reason they could imagine. The scuttlebutt is that some new bigwig resident lodged a complaint that was taken seriously this time. It was a lot of fun to see the miscreants in the police cars and their machines wheeled into a police van. The motorcyclists came from another area and used a short cut meant for the schoolchildren. I usually scared them pulling a light switch and blinding them away. We just didn’t know the residents were in such an uproar about these disreputable characters. The new one, who went up the police hierarchy, has a new set of twins and he and his wife needed sleep, they told us. They both went about organizing households with small children and there was quite a crowd watching the ruckus.

We had several incidents before between residents and motorcyclists, even involving the police a few times. This time, we are certain the motorcycles are gone forever, a relief for most of us.

You may or may not recall, Pelle, that, it must be several years ago now, that one of my sons expressed an interest in blacksmithing. He is now ready to go off to university and there is one university which has the ultimate blacksmith "programme" in the United States. Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. We goin' to try to get the boy out there.

14046. uzmakk - 3/10/2005 1:27:38 AM

Your advice was to let the little fucker go.

14047. PelleNilsson - 3/10/2005 8:05:45 AM

I remember and I wish him the best of luck. I admire people with the skill of the hand, something I sadly lack.

14048. Macnas - 3/10/2005 11:50:20 AM

I'm sure you're a dab hand at splicing cable Pelle.

14049. Magoseph - 3/10/2005 12:31:06 PM

I'm very good at splicing TV cable. Hello, Mac!

14050. Macnas - 3/10/2005 2:00:48 PM

Hello Mago.

Mr Uz!

Blacksmith indeed. Trying to one-up his father in the offbeat occupation stakes?

What does a modern blacksmith make? Ornamental wrought iron?

Replica swords for the movies?

14052. Magoseph - 3/10/2005 2:25:57 PM

There would be a big market around here for window iron bars--quite a few people have taken to them of late and some are rather ornamental.

14053. Macnas - 3/10/2005 2:51:35 PM

I know a few 'smiths. In fact the last one in this area died a few weeks back.

There is still a lot of farrier work, but that is not blacksmithing exactly. Most blacksmiths do the ornamental work now.

14054. uzmakk - 3/10/2005 3:05:23 PM

Mostly ornamental work. The American Blacksmith organization, what ever it is called, produces a rather slick magazine. A featured artist in a recent issue was showing off a bannister, the spindles of which were cattails(very natural looking and unspindle like) with a heron amongst them at the top of the stairs. A huge amount of work. Getting commissions like that cannot be easy. I told the boy that he was not taking the easy road. 'Course he's young and the advice means nothing to him.

14055. PelleNilsson - 3/10/2005 3:09:02 PM

I had a look at the Southern Illinois University's home page. Do not think ornamental work only. Think Giacometti.

It snows now, again—very pretty like for the ones staying home—terrible traffic jams by five o’clock. Thee inches predicted-when will it ever end?

14057. thoughtful - 3/10/2005 7:19:28 PM

I'm figuring that we're in our last week of major artic air and snow mess. Just a feeling/hope on my part, without any data to back it up.

The other night driving home was the slipperiest drive so far this year. Rain changed to freezing rain before being coated in several inches of snow making for incredibly bad driving. And the winds were howling near hurricane force...one town reported a gust at 63 mph. Weather man said pressure drop was the equivalent of those in a hurricane. Temps were in the single digits...windchill below zero. All of this 2 days after it was 55 and sunny. Welcome to New England.

14058. PelleNilsson - 3/10/2005 7:31:35 PM

March is a hopeless month. One waits for spring but it doesn't come. Its only redeeming quality is that the light is back.

14059. Magoseph - 3/10/2005 8:52:51 PM

Yesterday while I was walking, I saw the snow along my route was not packed-white anymore, it was transparent and of a crystalline appearance—looked for the life of me like diamonds. There was not a cloud and the sun was bright--this probably accounted for this effect. I had never seen that before and I was quite entranced by it. I even took Flexy out to see it. Anyway, I was wondering how that happens, I mean the snow changing like I just tried to describe.

14060. arkymalarky - 3/11/2005 12:59:46 AM

It was in the 60s and sunny here today, but in the 40s and rainy yesterday.

There's a very nice ironworks store in Mountain View, AR. I love browsing there, but haven't been able to buy anything.
