One evening, I was running with my youngest sister and as we passed a woman walking a doberman pinscher (or maybe it was walking her), it lunged out and bit my sister. I was very angry and had some choice comments to the woman about this. Fortunately, the dog didn't break my sister's skin.

I shouldn't have restricted my comment to women with large dogs, because anybody who lets their dogs run wild are even worse. I once was running and some thoughtless owner's two pit bulls basically put their mouths on my ankles before I got past his property. Yes, I was dancing around a little.

You are very lucky, and so was your sister. Stuff like that just infuriates me. Out here in the country, no one pens up their dogs, except us with Mazie and the hunting hounds up the road. If they visit the yard we don't worry too much about it, and our dogs will bark at passers by, but one that would bite or attack someone or their pet on a road would not likely be tolerated out here. It's a funny little community etiquette we have going here that's always worked.

Except for the one time Bob saw his dog eat the neighbor's cat, years ago. And, like Diva, they do rarely get run over on the highway that runs through.

Arky -

Dogs like that are ok if they have a little sense about cars - my next door neighbor has a couple of dogs - a collie and a german shepherd mix - we're both on the same private drive - and I once beat his fool collie in a shoving war with my bumper before stopping when it insisted on standing right in the middle of the drive (no way around). I keep a sharp eye out for his dogs when passing his property in my Tahoe because they still don't have enough sense not to go running in front of my moving vehicle. They're basically good dogs, though.

I'm amazed when I go on walks on the walking trail how many dogs are there and people let them off leash...whether they are supposed to or not...and yet the dogs are very well behaved...the most they might do is a passing sniff at you and many will just ignore you and keep going. That kind of training only works if someone has really spent time with the dog to work with them.

Our neighbors had a dog who was rather untrained and wild. The family ended up overseas for about 4 months so rented their house to another family that needed temporary housing. As part of the deal, they also cared for the dog. They trained the dog wonderfully so that he is off leash most of the time and yet never leaves their yard. What a difference. I'm not sure how they did it, but whatever they did, it seemed to work. I don't ever remember seeing them out there working with the dog on the borders of the property, yet somehow, he stays within the borders anyway.

Dogs without leashes are not allowed here and extreme barking in the night or day from dogs that are kept outside earns stiff fines. The rules for using the beach and the park are quite stringent too and that's good--less mess and beer and soda cans. Ten years ago, things were different, but the area is upstream now as our township chair told Flexy when he went to get the permit for Butch. Well, I feel if people have to pay high real-estate taxes and they are very high here, they should get the services they need. Dogs running around when kids are playing in their front yards created a scandal between the old residents and the new ones some years ago. We are lucky, the old-timers are only too glad to leave now that they can make a bundle selling their house which are quickly taken down and replaced by new ones—there’s much less hassle in the association meetings nowadays.

If you've ever watched hunting dogs work, it's quite amazing....not only are they off leash but they are clearly working at their owner's behest despite the fact that they are out in the wild and supposed to be flushing out birds and such. It's really something to see.

15745. thoughtful - 7/7/2005 9:59:56 PM

con'd, I keep reading that dogs generally aren't really happy unless their master bosses them around a little. Since that really isn't my style,

that really surprises me as, given interactions in some of these other threads, I would imagine being bossy would come quite naturally.

15746. concerned - 7/7/2005 10:02:40 PM

Well, thoughtful, I'd put it this way: if dogs were susceptible to pure reason, I would have the best behaved, happiest one on the block.

15747. thoughtful - 7/7/2005 10:05:41 PM

Max, I was surprised about Mago's new dog
being a mix of a very large dog and a very small dog.

reminded me of a time i was driving along the road and saw this german shepherd standing in this tall field of grass...i was surprised at how tall the grass must've been as i didn't see the dog's legs at all...the he walked toward the road where the grass was shorter...doggone if he didn't have the legs of a dachshund...the rest of him was the size of a regular shepherd...darndest looking thing...and that mustabeen either a real low crouch or a real stretch!

Con'd,

Diva was very good about cars, but one careless moment when she probably had getting home on her mind, coupled with not having had an experience on a highway, cost her after 6 years of being very cautious.

Bigger dogs can survive hits, and Sasha was hit at least twice. Mojo may get hit one of these days, but she's generally pretty careful. Car chasing dogs drive me up the wall, but they don't tend to last long out here.

15749. concerned - 7/8/2005 12:10:57 AM

Actually, I didn't 'hit' the dog - I sort of nudged up to him real slow and pushed him over at about 1mph then stopped - dumb mutt got off his butt and decided to mosey out of the way after that but I think still sort of resents me for pushing him around that time:)

15750. arkymalarky - 7/8/2005 12:26:34 AM

Ooooh. We've had dogs sleep in the road, too. Bob accidentally killed a neighbor's dog that way--late at night, and the dog lifted up his head, and that's the first Bob saw of it, way too late to respond.

15751. arkymalarky - 7/8/2005 12:27:46 AM

...lay around or sleep in the road, that is.

15752. concerned - 7/8/2005 12:33:23 AM

That'd be really scary, if the dog slept in the private access drive, but when I tipped him over, it was daylight he was fully awake, barking away, and determined to prevent my car from passing. I really think the dog is a little short on smarts, being a purebred collie. Mostly what I think I bruised was his little doggie ego - incredible that he had so little sense that he would try to overcome a push by a car bumper but that's exactly what he tried to do and got pushed over onto his side as a result.

15753. concerned - 7/8/2005 12:39:54 AM

Btw, when this happened, I was driving a low-slung Thunderbird, not the Tahoe, so the bumper was at the point of the dog's shoulder. I stopped the car immediately when I tipped the collie. Then he got up and walked away. Point taken, I guess, because he never deliberately got in front of my car again.

Real dumb mutt, though.

15754. arkymalarky - 7/8/2005 3:13:32 AM

I'd heard of cow tipping, but dog tipping is a new one.

15755. concerned - 7/8/2005 3:20:54 AM

Heh heh. I had actually typed something in about cow tipping, but deleted it, since I had never done it myself. FWIW, that is the closest thing to what happened with this collie, though. I was a little concerned that I might have created some physical injury at the time, but there was never any indication of such and the dog's still chugging around just fine some four years later.

Rain! Rain! Rain!

We have rain. Thunder too...

After only four tenths of an inch in all of June it is most welcome.

Whatever Gods there be... Thank you very much.

15757. judithathome - 7/8/2005 3:45:43 AM

Robert, we were drenched all day...tons of rain. Dancing in the street, I was!

15758. arkymalarky - 7/8/2005 5:04:57 AM

Just rub it in, you Texans! I'm so envious.
