You're on to something there, alistair, something I have perfected though years of practice - masterful inactivity.

16007. alistairConnor - 8/5/2005 3:59:18 PM

I just heard, quite by chance, a very dear friend on national radio (France Inter), talking about her new one-man show, "Christine" that she's premièring in Thonon les Bains today.

Here she is, performing on the Brooklyn bridge

16008. Macnas - 8/5/2005 4:00:27 PM

Indeed, the charm of being idle.

16009. arkymalarky - 8/5/2005 4:17:33 PM

Alistair, you sound like something straight out of Wind in the Willows!

16010. alistairConnor - 8/5/2005 4:21:33 PM

Ah yes, I'm being a Toad!

Thank you arky.

16011. Ms. No - 8/5/2005 5:57:57 PM

Arx,

I'm aiming for next year for sure. If I'd known ahead of time what exactly was going to be going on in my life this summer I would've been there last weekend, but hindsight, as they say, is 20/20.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is definitely a great song and I don't have a dislike for Nirvana, I just don't cream my jeans over them the way I'm apparently supposed to.

Honestly, I don't know that I really prefer Hole to Nirvana, unless we're talking about what I'm going to sing at the bar. Now, Heart-Shaped Box, I'd enjoy singing, but otherwise give me Malibu or Celebrity Skin.

I know none of you watchs Big Brother but please go HERE and cast a vote for Kaysar, a really good looking and very smart young man who was voted off last night by a bunch of racist, xenophobic morons. If he gets more votes than the other two, he will be able to return to the house and wreak havoc on the others.

16013. Ulgine Barrows - 8/5/2005 8:42:54 PM

Doll Parts or Smells Like Teen Spirit might also be fun. Excellent complaint rock!

I have a karoke of The Devil Went Down to Georgia I'm fond of.Doll Parts or Smells Like Teen Spirit might also be fun, I'm with larky on that. Excellent early 90s complaint rock!
STP, gotta love that interstate guitar.

I have a karoke of The Devil Went Down to Georgia I'm fond of.
Heartland, Midwest, Levelland, you're correct.

alistairconnor, have you read Selling Ben Cheever? Thanks for your vote of non-confidence.

I am trying out Odin's masterful inactivity this afternoon. It is not working out so well. I think I might need to dig some dirt up in the garden and shuffle the world around.

Hello, speed55tx.

16014. judithathome - 8/5/2005 8:44:18 PM

Speed55, what part of Texas claims you? I'm in Fort Worth.

16015. Ulgine Barrows - 8/5/2005 8:49:20 PM

OK judithathome, I voted for Kaysar even though he looks like a possible terrorist.

Forgive me, I just read Vince Flynn's Memorial Day. If you haven't read it, I suppose my comment isn't funny.

16016. judithathome - 8/5/2005 9:02:44 PM

Well, it might be funny had I read that but I didn't so it just sounds like what is going on in the house on the show.

16017. Ulgine Barrows - 8/5/2005 9:27:27 PM

Beck's new album is pretty good, have you heard it?
daftly changing the subject

16018. judithathome - 8/5/2005 9:29:32 PM

No, I rarely listen to anything on the radio except NPR.

16019. Ulgine Barrows - 8/5/2005 9:33:57 PM

mmm, I think our NPR has Prairie Home Companion on Sat nite and then again on the Sunday morn. Garrison Keller is the bomb.

16020. alistairConnor - 8/5/2005 9:44:23 PM

Daftly, deftly, Ulgine is queen...
have you found yourself a living?

16021. Ms. No - 8/5/2005 10:04:40 PM

Ulgine,

Have you read Flynn's previous books? I had really enjoyed the series up until Memorial Day which I found disappointing. Too much detail about weapons and military maneuvers, too much author political agenda bleeding through and he managed to kill my affection for Rapp.

I'm interested in what the next one will be like because it seems it might be getting back on track with some political intrigue in the Washington Machine, but if it's just another book about how Vince Flynn could save the world if only the Powers that Be would listen to him then I'll have to pass.

16022. Ulgine Barrows - 8/5/2005 10:23:29 PM

No previous Flynn reading here.... I found the acronymns of all the miltary stuff were tedious.

Flynn tried to do a good job of presenting both sides of the story, I think. Probably didn't suceed to judithathome's standards. winky

16023. Ms. No - 8/5/2005 10:38:46 PM

His previous books were much better unless you get too insensed by what Flynn's politics appear to be. What I was most struck by when I first read Flynn was how much information and insight he seemed to have. His first three books pre-date the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon but I didn't read them until after. It was really quite eerie that some fiction author could have put so much of this information together and predicted events so well and yet our own government apparently couldn't.

The books started to deteriorate a bit after the 3rd because Flynn chose to stick with the character of Mitch Rapp and Mitch Rapp really only works as a lone-wolf, skirting the edges kind of character. Once he's brought into the fold, even when he's right --- which is ALL the time --- you often (of I often) look at him like some kind of feral animal brought into the house that could turn and savage the children at any moment.

Up until Memorial Day I could pretty much just overlook the irritating political agenda, but apparently Flynn was concerned that folks just weren't getting the point and so he had to lay it on a little heavier for MD.

16024. Ms. No - 8/5/2005 10:42:49 PM

Along with showing off his military knowledge in a blatant "Look here, THIS brilliant plan is how you'll catch Osama bin Laden. We'd be done with all this Iraq bullshit if someone would just do what I say."

I mean, come on, how did it serve the story to describe in detail every piece of weaponry, tactical support and vehicle whether land sea or air (three types of air and two types of land btw) involved in the storming of the renegade village? Three or four chapters of this crap and there's almost nothing going on except descriptions of weapons and troop movements? Puh-lease.

16025. Ulgine Barrows - 8/5/2005 10:47:50 PM

Well, there are lunatics out there who think short skirts on women show a society shot to hell.

I'll look at his earlier books, thanks. I'm not surprised to hear Flynn went with Mitch Rapp: lone-wolf with a georgeous wife and kids that don't hinder his superhero status. This ex-IBMer guy I worked with was the one that raved about Flynn, heh.
