ScottLoar - 10/16/2005 7:03:32 AM I've most recently read the English saying,"to sip soup with a knife", and although I've an inkling as to the meaning would one of you with more beef in his bones than I tell me the exact phrase and exactly what it implies? Thank you. 17041. ScottLoar - 10/16/2005 7:09:20 AM 用刀啜汤 in Chinese. 17042. arkymalarky - 10/16/2005 7:12:11 PM Is that related to eating peas with a knife? 17043. ScottLoar - 10/17/2005 1:50:25 AM Yes, now that you mention it, I think it would. What is your understanding of "eating peas with a knife"? 17044. arkymalarky - 10/17/2005 2:02:11 AM Being a hick--so backwards and uncultured that you don't even know the most basic manners. The idea is to dip a knife in honey and scoop the peas onto it. There's actually a scene of that in To Kill a Mockingbird (one of my favorite scenes ), but I think the phrase has been around a long time and didn't originate with the book. 17045. Magoseph - 10/17/2005 2:59:22 AM "to sip soup with a knife"
Scott, I think the expression implies that one is trying to accomplish something without the proper tools and what it really amounts to is a form of sarcasm.
