I'm trying to figure out what the gray matter is around the base of that candle. Moss/lichen? Sea sponge? Volcanic rock? I can't figure out if it looks like it would be soft to the touch or scratchy. Interesting.

17633. Magoseph - 11/28/2005 11:51:46 PM

Thanks, Robert, Ms. No, Thoughtful!

Pelle, is the candle purple or blue?

17634. Ms. No - 11/29/2005 12:08:27 AM

I thought it was white.

17635. judithathome - 11/29/2005 12:32:48 AM

And I see Pelle has paper-whites abloom, too!

17636. arkymalarky - 11/29/2005 1:17:35 AM

Thanks for all the good wishes for Mose! Alistair, she'll be 22 1/2, which is young, and her b/f will be 27 or 28. I was 24, and that seems so young now.

17637. arkymalarky - 11/29/2005 1:18:33 AM

Great to hear you had good results, Mags, and whatever the procedure, it sounds good not to have another one for three years.

17638. PelleNilsson - 11/29/2005 7:59:23 AM

The gray thing is moss which I picked last week.

The candle is white. Both pictures came out a bit darker than I intended.

17639. Macnas - 11/29/2005 10:28:54 AM

Mago,

Good on you girl.

17640. thoughtful - 11/29/2005 4:43:45 PM

22 is a great age to get married....I was 22 when i married.

17641. Ms. No - 11/29/2005 6:28:36 PM

Pelle,

I love that stuff but haven't seen any in years --- it must be the only thing that doesn't grow in California. What is it called?

17642. PelleNilsson - 11/29/2005 7:16:15 PM

We, like most people simply call it white moss, but a sniff around the net shows that this is a sign of profound and deplorable ignorance. It is not a moss at all but a lichen, a symbiotic organism comprising a fungus and an algae. There are two very similar variants called window lichen (the one in the picture) and reindeer lichen.

Window lichen was used to prevent draft around window panes. Reindeer lichen is a staple food for these animals.

17643. Ms. No - 11/29/2005 7:42:37 PM

I wonder if it's what makes them fly.

17644. Macnas - 11/29/2005 8:27:28 PM

Actually, reindeer do eat fungus that gets them pretty high.

17645. Ms. No - 11/29/2005 10:13:24 PM

I KISS YOU!!!!

17646. arkymalarky - 11/29/2005 10:18:43 PM

Howdy all.

Came home with a migraine today. I never do that, but this booger will not let up.

17647. judithathome - 11/30/2005 2:26:55 AM

We're off to a band concert tonight...if it's half as good as the jazz ensemble one I went to two weeks ago, it will be fabulous!

17648. labwabbit - 11/30/2005 4:17:13 PM

Greetings thoughtful, MsNo, Judith-Baabee, Arkus!, & the venerable Mago.

Hope your holidays were great and rewarding.

Been awhile since coming here. The place looks nice...feels like home.

17649. thoughtful - 11/30/2005 5:00:12 PM

hey labwabbit! nice to 'see' you again.

17650. labwabbit - 11/30/2005 5:04:43 PM

I don't get to post much in the past two years. Career change, inconsistent schedule, and being at sea at least 50% of the year. When I do have a moment, I do get to RI for a post or two, but far and few between.

I miss you guys, and have been thinking about what became of the crew that came together here, now, so many years ago.
How quickly the time does get away from us.

17651. labwabbit - 11/30/2005 5:05:39 PM

...and it SURE is nice to see you again as well thoughtful.
