Campari is pomegranate liquor. It's come back in fashion because of its antioxident properties...what better way to get your vitamins than in a tall glass of Campari and soda with lime!

Chambord straight would not only gag you but probably eat the enamel off your teeth. That's why we cut it with champagne.

There is also a brand of really good preserves called Chambord. I like the black raspberry myself. The label says they're from France but they're probably something else Alistair's compatriots foist off on us unsuspecting Texans of low social strata.

Grand Marnier is definitely good stuff...far better than the much sharper cointreau.

Driving around the backwoods in France, you can still sometimes see fading advertising hand-painted on the blank side wall of a café or house, generally for a now-unfashionable drink. A couple of times I have found one of these in a shop, and bought it to surprise my friends.

For example : Dubonnet. All the rage between the wars, probably nobody under 80 drinks it now. Pretty unexceptional stuff actually : sugared-up fortified wine with a few herbs and spices.

I've heard of Dubonnet but never had any. I have to say I'm not greatly moved by that discription to go out hunting for it.

Cointreau is good in Margaritas and Cosmopolitans but I've never tried it st....oh, wait. Yes, I did have it straight once and that's about all I remember of that particular evening.

Over the holiday a friend of mine offered a whiskey so peaty I swear I expected to be picking turf out of my teeth after each sip. It was kind of good and interesting at first and then the novelty wore off and it was just too, too for me.

I like a Gin and Tonic or Tuaca and soda but I found I was quite fond of Cosmopolitans on Christmas Day. The bar-minding family member who made them has never made me anything that I didn't like, though. He works for a liquor distributor so it's always an education to visit them.

Recent NYT had an op-ed by nora ephron on the cabbage pastries she can no longer find....however, apparently they have since been found again.

I've found myself a 'victim' of falling in love with something that is then pulled from the market. In addition to the blackberry julep above are Hood's reverse chocolate chip ice cream (chocolate ice cream with white chocolate chips) Entenmann's Cheese-filled pastry puffs, and weight watchers mocha java bars.

We had a local bakery that used to make these things called Boston Cream Pies...they were really one layer of sponge cake covered in a film of vanilla pudding and the top was divided into four sections, each of which were covered with fruit topping: strawberry, pineapple, blueberry, and apple. Then, the edge of the top was piped with white buttercream frosting and the sides of the cake were frosted in chocolate.

I loved those things, they were so garish and yummy! One New Year's Day, I was craving one and made my (then) husband drive to every store on our side of town looking for one...to no avail.

Of course, NOW if I wanted one, Keoni would make it for me. ;-)

I don't generally run into that with food but it almost never fails that I run into it with scents. I find something I adore and I will only wear that scent and then somebody goes and discontinues it on me. Or they change the formula. Bleh!

I know what you meant about scents...same thing here. But nothing is as bad as how I find a lipstick shade and BAM! it's discontinued.

One of the scents that changed was Chanel #5...it's nothing like it used to be.

My mother always talked about her favorite perfume by richard hudnut ... to give you an idea of how long ago we're talking. She said nothing else had that wonderfully soft fragrance and she misses it to this day. Scents are very powerful things.

That boston cream pie sounds sinful.

But this is all very bad.

See, I weighed myself this a.m. and i have a LOT of work to do. I really let myself go over the holidays, not to mention having allowed myself some weight creep in the few months before the holiday.

And I still have a fair amount of that 72% chocolate hubby bought me for xmas.

This ain't going to be easy!

Waiter, pour me another glass of water, straight up!

I've still got two Key Lime pies in my fridge that I'm trying to offload somewhere. I know my next door neighbor would take one but he's still out of town for the holiday.

I may just bring them to the office and ruin my co-workers' diets.

I suppose the cabbage pastries refer to “Choux à la Crème”—When I was a kid, we had every Christmas a “Pièce montée” made with them and also a “ Bûche de Noël”, which is a kind of cake made to look like a log, rolled with some delicious stuffing and decorated with chocolate and green icing.

I will get cravings for a cream puff....but has to be made with real whipped heavy cream to satisfy and MUST be dusted with powdered sugar. One of my faves!

I'm a sucker for biegnets. They make a variation at the Grand Lux Cafe served with chocolate, raspberry and Jack Daniels sauces on the side. I just skip the chocolate and mix and match the other two.

Sinfully delicious as they are, they don't even come close to real NO biegnets, but one makes do as one must. sob!
