My Dad saw Louis Armstrong, but what was really wild about that was that hardly anyone came to see him. It was in San Angelo, TX, of all places. 18780. arkymalarky - 3/5/2006 5:40:42 PM That sounds like a fabulous trip, Snow.
Things are great around here. I've started grad school FINALLY, and I'm taking two night classes, still doing the rural ed activism thing, and teaching. I've got a full plate, but nothing that's not enjoyable, except I'd prefer to have less of it, and I will after I finish grad school a year from this summer.
And I'm looking high and low for any alternative to my current home internet situation, but that's another story. 18781. PelleNilsson - 3/5/2006 6:24:12 PM I've seen many of the big guys. Lois Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellingtom, the guy on the vibraphone whose name escapes me, Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and some more I don't remember. I think that in Europe, France and Sweden had the most enthusiastic jazz audiencies in the 60s. 18782. robertjayb - 3/5/2006 7:13:49 PM Lionel Hampton. 18783. PelleNilsson - 3/5/2006 8:09:33 PM That's him. 18784. alistairconnor - 3/5/2006 8:20:19 PM A friend who used to play the vibraphone, slipped through the barriers at the Vienne jazz festival when she was a skinny 15 year old to hang out with Lionel Hampton and his band. 18785. prolph - 3/6/2006 1:05:33 AM billy holiday, fats wallar, king cole when he was a trio etc. I fear some of you have slipped in some swing, Swing is ok and yes I saw glen miller.
Alistair what's to tell? 18786. uzmakk - 3/6/2006 4:40:56 PM Sorry to be so late. I didn't show up in the Cafe on Saturday morning like I said I would. One son is home for a week for spring break and the other came in for one day to fence in a tournament in the newly formed NEPennsylvania USFA division. Gold medal for the fencer...second one.
Re: stepping out of the box
I'll be going into more detail in the future, but all I have time to tell you now is that I will be opening up my house for lunch daily during the week. Politics, if not always on the front burner, will be the theme. 18787. alistairconnor - 3/6/2006 4:48:18 PM Oh so you're coming out of the closet!
And throwing your hat in the ring? 18788. arkymalarky - 3/7/2006 1:26:35 AM Congrats on the fencing son, Uz!
We'll be looking for the details. 18789. Magoseph - 3/7/2006 9:55:44 AM It’s going to be 40 degrees today—about time, we were promised a break, but got 3 inches of sloppy snow. It is not cold for me, 30 degrees call for sweaters, but Flexy needs at least some sun and above 45 degrees to venture outside. After this grueling winter, we don’t need to cope with a cold, or worse, pneunomia.
I’m not going to look up for a birthday song for me—it’s bad enough that I am obliged to remember my birthday this Saturday. Kids, husband, brother won't ignore it, even though, they know how I feel about it.
18790. Macnas - 3/7/2006 10:35:06 AM Ah now, birthdays, I tend to forget my own, sometimes have to pause to remember the date.
But it's so good to be alive eh? And Mago, I know that whatever the birthday might be, in your mind and soul you're running like a deer down a dusty lane, past flowering meadows, laughing and shaking your ponytail at someone trying to catch up. 18791. uzmakk - 3/7/2006 1:05:32 PM Conner,
No, I'm not throwing my hat in the ring. At this point I am trying to raise political conciousness, among other things. Slow and steady. Winter menu- hearty soups. Summer menu - salads. Alcohol will be served, but I don't expect it to be very popular at lunch time.
Ms.No,
This judge was just reelected with numbers approximating 20,000 yes and 14,000 no. A poor showing which can be interpreted as a strong statement concerning this particular judge, or part of the general backlash against the judiciary and legislature here in PA. There is quite a bit of political hoopla going on the PA right now. The pay raise that was snuck through in the middle of the night has excited the peasants for the moment. From my morning paper -- Casey to justices: Legislative pay raise was illegal Casey is the state treasurer and had challenged Lynn Swann for the Republican gubinatorial position. The Repubs apparently had Swann in mind from the beginning and Swann is now the man.
Thanks, Arky. I was sent a picture of the medal winners via email. I expect there is a way to post it on the Mote, but it would take me half a day to do it. 18792. uzmakk - 3/8/2006 1:20:31 AM I got my politics wrong. Casey is a dem challenging Senator Santorum. Scranton gave up a challenge to Swann. 18793. arkymalarky - 3/8/2006 6:49:07 AM My advice if you're interested in political activism for a particular cause is not to run for anything. Instead of helping your cause more, you constrain your ability to work for it and the amount of time you can devote to it. 18794. Magoseph - 3/8/2006 3:17:36 PM Mac, what an uplifting and pleasant birthday thought, such as I have never before received. Thank you very much, Mac. 18795. Macnas - 3/8/2006 4:00:51 PM My pleasure Mago.

Truer words were never spoken!!
