Magos, I called the phone repair people and would you believe it? That idiot woman my phone line is crossed with was on the line the entire time I was making the report! The person I talked to had no problem understanding what my gripe was...ha! He could hear her plainly, too!

They are coming out tomorrow to fix it.

21133. arkymalarky - 2/11/2007 9:19:09 PM

That sounds like a nightmare. Reminds me of the old party-line days.

21134. lemwalker - 2/11/2007 9:23:29 PM

This might belong in News & Current Events, but it is now aged.
Some person from Manhattan wrote a book about the 10 worst places to live. Picked on Washington State a lot. The town I live near got an honorable mention as a "festering wound of a town". The city fathers and mothers are up in arms over it. Looking for a grant to spruce the place up, though Sitka spruce grows wild around here. Suggested they adopt as the motto; "Welcome to Forks, a festering wound". Bet folks would travel a long ways to visit such a berg. But they would rather waste money on facades to make it look like everywhere else.
I think the author was just having a bad vacation out here. Hell, I know I would have a bad vacation going to NYC!

Those list books are so stupid. How about the 10 worst people to be? To read? I say embrace making a list. Dedicate something to the jerk who wrote the book and get him to come there for the ceremony. Give him the key to the city and a t-shirt.

good idea Arky! Give him a flag at the drag races

I've been to Forks on vacation. Stopped at the library. I was only there for a short time, but it seemed nice. Close to the Pacific coast, right next to the Olympic National Forest. Good trout fishing. How bad could it be?

O, I dunno, lemwalker, I've had some great vacations in NYC.

But I wouldn't wanna live there. A vacation is OK.

An those "Best Cities to Live" or "Worst Cities to Live"?
Who wrote those articles, anyone you trust?

My sympathies to the arkies and my congrats to J@h on the good news.

Re smoking, I've been through this so much now that I actually found myself lecturing some young captive kid who was smoking outside the office building about how exceedingly painful lung cancer was for my SIL. Have no idea if it did him any good, but it made me feel a lot better knowing I had tried. Now it looks like I'll have another bullet to add...my poor mother never smoked a day in her life, but completely a victim of 2nd hand smoke and dealing with the tumor in her lung.

Selfishly, I'm thinking great, I've got 2 parents with lung cancer...the odds of me carrying the gene that makes me more susceptible are pretty darn good. And I'm reviewing in my mind how many years I lived with smoke too, though I've never smoked. Mom has lived in a smoke-free environment for about 17 years now, but obviously it wasn't soon enough for her.

Go Chicks!

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 11 — After death threats, boycotts and a cold shoulder from the country music establishment, the Dixie Chicks gained sweet vindication Sunday night at the 49th annual Grammy Awards, capturing honors in all five of the categories in which they were nominated....

The Dixie Chicks took home Grammys for the top three awards: record, song and album of the year. Their “Taking the Long Way” (Open Wide/Columbia) won best country album and “Not Ready to Make Nice” also captured best country performance by a duo or group with vocal. That song is an unapologetic response to the furor set off in 2003 when the band’s lead singer, Natalie Maines, made an off-the-cuff antiwar remark to London concertgoers: “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”

What's with the one in the middle? Shouldn't they rename themselves Dixie Chicks and a Toothy Buffalo?

21143. judithathome - 2/12/2007 10:30:26 PM

That's rather cruel...she's a healthy looking woman who has had children. You want skeletons on parade, watch Paris Hilton.

21144. tmesis - 2/12/2007 11:18:55 PM

False dichotomy!

21145. wonkers2 - 2/12/2007 11:30:37 PM

Yours was a dumb comment.

21146. arkymalarky - 2/13/2007 6:35:49 AM

I'm glad to see you posting here, Tmesis, but bold remarks get bold responses. You're not new, so I figure you know that going in. Personally I think she's absolutely adorable. I like the dark 'do. After hearing about it I wasn't sure I would, but it looks better than the blonde on her, imo.

21147. arkymalarky - 2/13/2007 6:38:18 AM

In the last ten years or so I've gained about 25lbs, and mine doesn't sit nearly as well on me as hers (and other women who are heavier but work on health and fitness) does on her. I'm hoping to lose mine, but gaining it was a lot harder than losing it. My first priority is to get healthier, but that's hard in the face of old, pre-weight-gain habits.

21148. arkymalarky - 2/13/2007 6:39:00 AM

Gaining it was a lot EASIER

21149. Magoseph - 2/13/2007 9:56:13 PM

This morning doing errands was a nightmare—frozen slush everywhere, big SUVs and snowplows hogging the roads, no parking near the post office and the food store’s parking lot was horrible to manage.

We have such a tenuous situation here at home, were I to have a fall or have a car accident. I became so nervous thinking of all the arrangements that I’d have to make if something happened to me that, once home, I was so giddy with relief that Flexy thought that I had a drink somewhere. I wish!

21150. thoughtful - 2/14/2007 12:20:23 AM

That's coming our way...tomorrow will sure be messy around here. So long as it clears out by thurs am as I have a flight to take.

Also thurs is the day mother goes for her needle biopsy...hubby will get her there and back. Hopefully all will go ok...fingers and toes and eyes crossed.

21151. arkymalarky - 2/14/2007 12:24:58 AM

We'll be thinking about you and yours. Hope you have a good flight, as well.

We've only had one nice, pretty, small snow that didn't affect driving at all. I was out of school, but for a flu outbreak (I didn't get it--at least not yet).
