Ms. No,

the only thing that really makes me nervous is that I have to sign a two year contract.

Starting teachers sign two year contracts in CA? That's interesting. It's one year here (considered probation) and then two and three year contracts after the first year. Though the district I am in now is one year contracts for everyone, forever.

What happens if you break a contract there? Here, it's really no big deal, people do it all of the time.

24181. arkymalarky - 6/16/2008 9:51:12 PM

It's year to year in AR, too. I don't know of any districts that offer extended contracts to teachers. And people break contracts here, as well, but the district can legally hold a teacher. I've known it to happen and it causes real bad blood for a school year, which isn't good for anybody. Usually schools just make sure they can get a replacement.

24182. Ms. No - 6/17/2008 2:18:26 AM

I don't know what the usual policy is. It seems more likely that it's year to year here, as well. I think the 2-year requirement is because of the program that I'm in.

Arx,

Had a great chat with Mose this evening! Thanks for putting me in touch!

24183. arkymalarky - 6/17/2008 3:18:38 AM

Cool!

24184. Ms. No - 6/18/2008 5:14:49 PM

Sorry, I left part of Jen's question hanging: I have no idea what the penalty for breaking contract is. It might make it harder to get a job elsewhere, but I wouldn't imagine they'd take the time to sue you over it....although they might. It IS California, after all. ;->

24185. arkymalarky - 6/18/2008 7:55:30 PM

If you break a contract here you can't teach anywhere else in the state.

24186. Ms. No - 6/19/2008 5:51:16 PM

I imagine it's something like that here.

24187. judithathome - 6/21/2008 4:23:16 PM

Hey, guys...I'm still alive but since last Wednesday, have had a raging kidney infection...trip to the ER last Friday and 2 visits to the doctor and it's STILL causing me such pain I am probably going to come out of this a bona fide druggie.

My son is due to be released from the rehab facility tomorrow...he's had a personality change like you wouldn't believe. He's hateful and rude and claims it's because of being confined to that hospital...I told him yesterday that when he getd home, his attitude had better change or he will be disowned. I haven't seen him smile since the surgery...I took the nurses a $50 box of Godiva chocolates yesterday hoping it might make up a little bit for what they've had to put up with from him. They've certainly earned it!

His motor skills, congnitive abilities, etc. are all working extremely well but his polite upbringing is totally out the window....

24188. thoughtful - 6/21/2008 4:27:46 PM

So sorry to hear that j@h...kidneys are tricky things. Take good care.

Sorry about Les's personality shift...it can easily be a result of the surgery.

My gf father had a stroke and underwent a personality change. It was very weird. He was a very conservative, extremely religious man, and after his stroke he was using bad language and flirting outrageously with young women and other inappropriate behavior. The good news is that, with time, he has become a lot more like his old self and the worst of his behavior has been significantly toned down.

Let's hope Les's situation is only temporary.

24189. judithathome - 6/21/2008 5:29:07 PM

I'm almost certain it's the after-effects of the surgery...he was like this last August when he had his stroke and had to be in same hospital for 10 days. He returned to normal as soon as he returned home and started out-patient therapy. The neurosurgeon warned us he would probably have the same symptoms as though he'd had a stroke.

One thing that isn't helping is that his roommate at home let his dogs get out and though we found the older dog at the pound, the little puppy is gone. I feel sure someone just kept her...she was adorable. We're putting out "lost dog" posters but I fear she's gone.

And frankly, I'm happy for that...she was a handful and just wore the older dog out...the older dog has aging problems and I think she will be better without the constant aggravation of the younger, more energetic pup. Also, I would worry about the pup tripping Leslie or throwing him off balance.

Damn, Judith. I hope things improve asap.

24191. jexster - 6/21/2008 9:53:36 PM

I won't pay McBush Oil 4.50 a gallon so I take the bus
The 21 Hayes to be precise and as usual one bus was out of the route causing mass overcrowding

The bus was too full to stop and pick up passengers. At one stop, an old chinaman went into the middle of the street and stood in front of the bus. A olarge friendly negro went out and gently pursuaded the old chink to remove his carcass from the roadway as the lady driver exclaimed

I CAN"T BELIEVE THIS SHIT

I HOWLED

And it only cost me 1.50

24192. alistairConnor - 6/21/2008 10:07:28 PM

Jeez Jex. Welcome to the 21st century!

You're a precursor. We'll all be doing that (and cursing) in coming years.

City dwellers, I mean.

I just wonder what I'll do with my big old house in the country, an hour and a half's expensive driving from where I work. Sell it now? (the market is bad, but it'll get worse). or keep it for when the shit really hits the fan?

I can grow potatoes. And rapeseed to run the van.

24193. arkymalarky - 6/22/2008 12:21:32 AM

We're going to stay and grow our food on ours, so when the revolution happens we'll be self-sufficient. We'll just have to grow lots of vines by the road so people won't know we're there.

Really, though, we're looking to retire in five years or so and try not to encounter civilization more than twice a month. At least that's the plan.

24194. anomie - 6/22/2008 3:32:29 AM

Darn Judith! Hope things start looking up from here...

24195. anomie - 6/22/2008 3:35:02 AM

I have a tomato plant I grew from seed on back deck. I hope it survives the 100 plus temps we've been having in Vegas.

Seeing it grow made me think maybe I shouldn't have gone with rock in the backyard. A garden might me nice. But all my dirt is beneath two inches of stone and tarp.

24196. Ms. No - 6/22/2008 6:11:45 PM

You can always make a planter box.

24197. Ms. No - 6/22/2008 6:16:37 PM

Judith,

Cut this stuff out, you hear?? We need to send the memo that you've had your full allotment of "interesting times" lately. Hope you feel better soon ---- and that Les regains his equilibrium pronto. He's a wonderful son and a good man. It's hard enough to have serious health issues without also becoming a new and unpleasant version of one's self for the duration.

Be well, honey.

24198. judithathome - 6/22/2008 7:18:41 PM

His demeanor has changed considerably within 3 days...he's sort of resigned to them keeping him there another day or two. And he's thinking more clearly and has apologized for his behavior the other day.

Hopefully tomorrow will be the day they release him...after changing it THREE times.

24199. arkymalarky - 6/24/2008 12:30:31 AM

Well, I'm at Disney World. I'm too tired to enjoy it right now, and I'm not happy with the hotel--they don't even have wireless. But I hope to get a good night's sleep. Bob's out with his supt right now, and she's a live wire. My commute went okay today, and that was the biggest stresser. We're going to stay two nights on the beach on the way home, and we're going to Epcot tomorrow and Wed. It's the first non-Colorado vacation we've been on since we went to Europe ten years ago. The working part of this working vacation has been good for both of us so far--lots of useful stuff.
