25405. arkymalarky - 7/10/2009 4:19:43 AM Can't load on the blackberry--heading for civilization and wifi tomorrow and will try to check out the video then! 25406. arkymalarky - 7/12/2009 4:04:33 AM Great cool rainy breezy mountain weather today. Was sick as a dog yesterday. Don't know if it was a stomach virus or just my system, but I'm so glad to be over it that everything's more pleasant than usual. Hope to go on a mountain walk tomorrow. We haven't walked since we've been here.
There's a bear living in town and he's into garbage most every night. The neighbors are used to him after over two years, which is scary to me. I had to help the neighbor pick up Mom and Dad's garbage right after we got here. The bear had strewn it everywhere. We'll take ours to the dump when we leave. 25407. arkymalarky - 7/12/2009 4:24:19 AM Here it's 58F. Home it's 85. 25408. judithathome - 7/12/2009 4:46:02 PM 10:30am here and already 90 degrees.
Keoni is building a flower bed in the front yard...putting paver stones on two sides...driveway and sidewalk sides. The sides of the bed are stacked bricks and he's done a great job.
He's decided to do this because he over-bought (big sale!) on hard wood mulch...has bag after bag stacked in the garage. The spot he's making into a flowerbed is in complete shade all the time and no grass will grow there...I suggested planting a shade ground cover but he hates the stuff and is determined to do this brick and paver project. We'll get black flowerpots...three, in sizes from large down to small...and plant whatever we can find that needs constant shade.
Annuals...because I can't or won't bring them in over the winter. I think this fall, I will make a little display with pumpkins and for Christmas, get some poinsettias.
All this hard work from him in 100+ weather just to utilize the purchase of a few too many bags of mulch! By tonight, he may be agreeing with me that it would have been wiser to just plant the ground cover. ;-) 25409. arkymalarky - 7/13/2009 6:16:31 AM Walked two miles today at a pretty good incline. Hope to do that every day until we leave. 25410. judithathome - 7/14/2009 11:21:20 PM It's 106 here. 25411. Ms. No - 7/14/2009 11:31:13 PM It's only 100 here. Sunny and 99-101 all week with lows from 60-65 at night.
I can't believe I said it's only 100.
Sheesh.
I'm hot. I'm tired. I'm restless and the job hunting thing sucks. I looked in 4 different districts today and found only two jobs to apply for. This California budget thing sucks ass.
My school was just notified that they have to cut yet one more full-time position. This does not bode well for me. All the teachers will be given the opportunity to reduce their schedule to create room for another position, but that's hard on them, too.
And while I'm desirable on a practical level because I'm an Arts teacher and willing to work another year at 60%, they've currently got a full-time teacher who can teach Arts.
AND they lost a science teacher that the need probably more than they need me.
Did I mention all of this sucks ass?
argh! There's not even a movie I want to go see. Maybe I'll go to the library. They've got AC and I think I've got a book in.
Whee! 25412. arkymalarky - 7/15/2009 4:49:54 AM Man, No. I hope things work out. AR lost 1800 kids last year, but I haven't heard anything about job declines. I think it's too evenly spread across the state, and we don't have the money problems CA has. I really feel for you and hope things work out. I('s worse when you really like where you were at. Any chance they will keep you on their list so you could go back after next year if they have the budget? I've been hired where I work now three times in 28 years. Keep us posted. 25413. arkymalarky - 7/15/2009 4:51:34 AM I'll be kind and not post the temp right now. It can get into the mid-90s here. Never seen 100. 25414. Ms. No - 7/15/2009 7:14:13 AM My school would definitely hire me back. The crappy thing is that my school has money in its general fund but the disctrict won't let them use the money to pay teacher salaries. We've got grant money out the wazoo that we might end up losing because we literally can't spend it.
The stupid thing about all these teacher layoffs is that within five years there's going to be a huge teacher shortage here because of retirements. In the meantime they're killing the new teacher pool because nobody can get a damn job and all of the new teachers who are somewhere in the middle of getting their credentials fully cleared are going to have to leave their programs.
Honestly, there won't even be enough substitute positions to support everyone --- and you don't earn any credit toward your credential subbing. So, I could end up subbing all next year and be a year behind in my credential program.
Shoulda listened to you and come to Arkansas, eh?
25415. CharlieL - 7/15/2009 2:56:59 PM Hi, everyone. I haven't been here in a while, life has been crazy, the band's not playing out much because of the economy, but we're back in the studio. At work, what was being done by four is now being done by two and I'm one of the two. It's good reading through the threads and seeing names that make me feel right back at home again.
Take care,
--Chuck 25416. CharlieL - 7/15/2009 2:57:46 PM Wow! The IONA link is still in the "butter bar." I'm amazed. 25417. wabbit - 7/15/2009 3:51:22 PM Hey CharlieL, great to see you!
I check the links from time to time and remove the dead ones, but as long as your band site is up, the link isn't going anywhere. If something changes, drop me a line and I'll update. 25418. CharlieL - 7/15/2009 4:06:10 PM Thanks! I just thought it was pretty cool. 25419. Wombat - 7/15/2009 4:17:06 PM Hi Charlie L! 25420. Ms. No - 7/15/2009 6:20:36 PM Charlie!!! Great to see you --- and very glad to hear you're one of the two! 25421. arkymalarky - 7/15/2009 10:30:38 PM CHARLIE!! Great to see you!
We're going to Estes Park tomorrow. I still remember long ago when y'all were going there! 25422. arkymalarky - 7/15/2009 10:31:14 PM CHARLIE!! Great to see you!
We're going to Estes Park tomorrow. I still remember long ago when y'all were going there! 25423. arkymalarky - 7/15/2009 10:37:17 PM Knew that was going to happen.
Gee, No, it seems you could do a lot of neat stuff with the grant money in dramatic productions, etc, but you couldn't do that and be in your program. Sucks all around. The way they hamstring money in the schools is a disgrace. If they trust them so little then why do they allow them to handle all the kids? They need to monitor and account and give districts leeway. But it's largely political--yet another way to undermine public schools while funneling govt money to private ed programs and charters whose accountability and budget restrictions are ZERO.
Okay. I'll stop now. 25424. Ms. No - 7/16/2009 6:30:22 AM I've been griping for weeks now. Don't let me stop you --- although I suppose I should take some initiative and move these over to the teaching thread.
I've also been chatting with my brother and listening to news and whatall and I'm so sick of the rampant corporatism in this country I can barely see straight. I don't know how we'll ever get away from it peacefully and intact. Seems like it'll take a revolution -- or a full-scale meltdown to get out from under the corporate fat-cats that run the country off the sweat and blood of all the regular folk.
Arrgggh!
I think I'm gonna go watch an action flick. Seeing some ass-kicking will maybe exorcise my mood a bit. ;->
