We're safe and warm with our new Xmas shelter adoptee, litter-mates Honeybee and Riley . . .

They are very lucky furpeople! How did you folks do for snow? Now that we've started clearing the driveway, I can say we got at least 18", probably more.

25789. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 12/21/2009 12:49:48 AM

Nowhere near that. Six to eight inches in the greater Hartford area. Powdery and easy to snow-blow or shovel.

25790. iiibbb - 12/21/2009 1:12:06 AM

I think we topped out at 18"... lots of drifts due to the high winds. 12-20" with 2-3 feet in some of the drifts.

25791. wabbit - 12/21/2009 1:59:37 AM

My 18-20" is where there was no drifting. I'll check the depth tomorrow where the snowfall is protected, it's probably more like 24". Some of the drifts are over three feet. We'll finish digging out tomorrow. Happily, as WoW said, it's pretty dry and easy to snow-blow or shovel. As a geographic reference, we're about halfway between Boston and Sandwich/Bourne.

Our bird feeders were getting hammered today. At least 30 red-winged blackbirds and six robins were competing with the usual gang of bluejays, cardinals, various sparrows, juncos and titmouses. One of my cats tried to go out the one door we could open, but decided against adventuring when her usual path next to the house, where the snow is rarely more than an inch deep, was up to her chin.

I'm a half-hour to 45 minutes west of you. My brother lives near Concord and he only got 8".

25793. alistairConnor - 12/21/2009 10:49:30 AM

We got about 8". Decided to park the van at the neighbour's place at the top of the hill, after nearly not making it up. Later in the day when I had to take my daughter into town, we saw the neighbour feeding his horse near our place, so we accepted a lift in his 4WD. The great thing about this vehicle, he was telling us, is that it will go anywhere, any time. Then we attacked the steep bit. And we were spinning all four wheels. So he headed into the field beside the road, thinking the traction might be better, taking it diagonally to lessen the slope. But he couldn't find the angle, and we were going crabwise, leaving three furrows, and losing altitude. He took us right into the middle of the field, about 100 yards from the road, before he gave up and went to find a tractor.

25794. arkymalarky - 12/21/2009 2:27:53 PM

Ha! Yes, they'll go anywhere, any time; they just won't stop or let you steer where you want. Glad to see everyone seems okay in all the snow. No ice? The worst we ever had here was our two weeks of ice and no electricity, no way to go anywhere. The best was 13" of great snow, no outages and no school. It was loads of fun. We haven't had any winter weather to speak of in a long time.

25795. wabbit - 12/21/2009 4:16:33 PM

Southeast MA and RI got the bulk of this one, with less snow as you move north and north-west. iiibbb, Concord is a beautiful area, must be very pretty up there now. We were seeing reports from out your way showing lots and lots of snow!

The best snow car I ever had was a 1979 Subaru Brat. I never got stuck anywhere. Really the ideal bad weather car, if you didn't need anything with a back seat. I never made any major repairs on that car - the only thing that ever broke was the clutch cable, and we jury-rigged a piece of barbed wire as a temporary fix (and put about 30K miles on that piece of wire before getting the cable replaced). It finally retired with 230K miles because of body rot, it couldn't pass inspection anymore. A local junkyard used it as their runaround vehicle for another 4 years or so.

I saw a funny thing on the toilet wall just now.

No, not the sort of thing you're thinking of (shame on you). A public health notice. Trying to make anglo-saxons out of us!

Instructing us to say "bonjour" and smile. No handshake, no insanitary kissing.

They claim it's about swine flu, but I call it creeping cultural imperialism.

Great kitties!

Just wanted to pop in while I've got a second to wish you all a wonderful holiday!

I'm currently in Baton Rouge and we're off on a road-trip tomorrow to spend Christmas Eve in a hunting lodge. Sounds like lots of fun. We'll do our family Christmas when we return on Christmas Day evening.

Saw Avatar today -- amazing film!

Bundle up in the snow you guys!

Merry, merry!

Happy Festivus (a day late) and Merry Christmas! I'm off to be the designated driver for the evening.

25805. CharlieL - 12/25/2009 3:34:51 AM

Merry Christmas to everyone here at The Mote!

If anyone has an XM radio, IONA's Christmas concert will be played tomorrow at noon EST on The Village, XM Channel 15. We recorded it live at the XM studios in Washington on December 8th, and we haven't heard it yet, either, so we're psyched about it. It will be replayed Tuesday morning (Monday night) at midnight EST.

25806. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 12/25/2009 5:21:59 AM

Happy Happy WABB & Kudos Charlie! (Don't have XM-Sorry!)
