I'm still looking in once a day at least, but I have no life irl, either.

25831. alistairConnor - 1/9/2010 10:52:13 AM

helloooo... still thinking of you all!

25832. judithathome - 1/10/2010 1:02:20 AM

Arky, are y'all freezing your asses off like we are?

25833. Ms. No - 1/10/2010 8:30:47 AM

howdy all! Just busy as a little beaver and suffering from a horrendous cold that I don't have time to stop and baby.

This year....er, school year, not 2010, is kicking my butt, but I'm certainly learning a lot.

I do not love grading papers.

Judith,

I don't know if you do the Dallas Musical season --- for some reason I'm thinking it's not really your cuppa in general. I'm not usually much of a musicals person myself, but I did just leave a review over in the Arts thread.

We had the baby a few days ago. It's a boy. 9 lbs, natural childbirth.

So far so good except he hasn't pooped in a day and a half; even though he's nursing well. Hospital said this wasn't a concern yet, and we're seeing the pediatrician tomorrow anyway.

It's been great so far.

We named him Broden.

Mazeltov! Enjoy not sleeping (or feeling guilty because you can, but mom can't).

25837. alistairConnor - 1/11/2010 12:43:35 AM

Ahaaaaa... Life will never be the same. For better or for worse. Mostly for better of course!

Take care of the Mrs! It's too easy to let relationship problems slide, with all the other stuff happening...

Congratulations to all three of you, and many years of happiness.

I'm pulling my weight on the night patrol.

My Life as Metaphor, an intermittent series.

Yesterday morning I had an important mission. I had to pick up my elder daughter, a few miles away, then take her to our appointment with the psychologist. We have important things to say.

Thirty to forty centimeters of snow. I had prudently parked my car at a neighbour's place, half a mile up the hill. So I trudge up there and de-ice the car. Confer with the neighbour about the state of the roads. We agree that I have a sporting chance. He is not a man to be relied on to dissuade one from an imprudence; I learned later that he had, the previous day, attempted to crash-start his car out of a snowdrift and flipped it over in a field.

So I gave it a go. Got about half a mile. The windscreen was iced up inside, and I misjudged a controlled slide around an uphill corner, and ended up with a wheel and a half off the edge of the road. Thus far, no further.

So I phoned the shrink, and my daughter, and pushed back the appointment a week. And found a neighbour with a tractor to pull me out, no damage. And meekly took the car back and parked it at the neighbour's.

And sat tight for the rest of the weekend, brooding. About my frosty relations with my daughter and the impossibility of making any progress.

Congratulations!!! Welcome Broden!!

25841. arkymalarky - 1/11/2010 7:59:04 AM

Oooooh, ooooh! I skip one day and miss a baby! Congratulations 3i!!!

25842. arkymalarky - 1/11/2010 8:02:03 AM

We are freezing our asses off, Judith, and I didn't get out of my pj's all weekend. I worked sitting on the couch watching tv. I got a lot done though, and didn't feel like I was being deprived since I didn't want to set foot outside anyway.

After 29 years I still hate grading papers, No, but rubrics, holistic grading, and focused-grading (whatever it's called, where you grade certain criteria on various assignments instead of everything every time) and varied assessments have made it better than it used to be.

25844. arkymalarky - 1/11/2010 8:09:09 AM

It's hard to see, but you will, Alistair.

25845. wabbit - 1/11/2010 4:04:55 PM

Congratulations iiibbb, that's very exciting news! What a wonderful name, Broden. Best wishes to you all!

25846. arkymalarky - 1/11/2010 5:49:45 PM

The grading term is "primary-trait scoring."

I feel better now.

So the in laws left this morning. They really stir P's pot. They mean well... the love us... and without their support we certainly couldn't have made this move and had this baby. But they are not relaxing to be around. How her mom can't realize that needling a new mom is a good thing, or that she's even doing it I don't know.

We also realize in hindsight that we should have limited the number of hours over here. It means a lot for P to be able to relax with the baby. We also couldn't talk about our baby concerns in front of them because they do not moderate stress for us... only elevate it.

At any rate we have 2 days to ourselves until my mom and dad come... and they've got a clue about what "space" means.

We had a mild scare this weekend. Baby wasn't pooping or peeing. We called the hospital's nursing line Saturday to ask a few questions, and they didn't tell us to come in since we were seeing our pediatrician this morning.

Went to the pediatrician and the baby had lost some weight... apparently P's not giving enough milk yet... so we're going to supplement with formula. P was beside herself because of all of the stress.

At any rate... we're supplementing with formula and going back to the dr. in a couple of days, but after the one feeding at the dr. this morning I already see a change in his demeanor. Sleeps better at least. I'm optimistic.

I'm not sure how to post a picture for you all... I'll try to figure something out.

25848. iiibbb - 1/11/2010 7:49:40 PM

correction.... needling a new mom is a bad thing.
