thanks! bob wants to get one that runs off the tractor, but i think propane is a better idea. he really doesn't want to get one at all and has been dragging his feet for the last 30 years. ;/

Seems like a no-brainer if you have propane at the house already.

26553. iiibbb - 9/22/2011 2:21:42 AM

Assuming you even want/need one. I'm ambivalent, but it could come in handy one more week in my life.

i think he'd go for it, depending on the price.

26556. judithathome - 9/22/2011 10:20:07 PM

Jeez, I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

26557. arkymalarky - 9/22/2011 11:24:58 PM

generators for when the power goes out.

26558. judithathome - 9/22/2011 11:54:38 PM

Well...when our power goes out, we just leave the house and drive until we find some place with lights on...or give in and go to bed.

26559. iiibbb - 9/23/2011 12:38:19 AM

Judith... the power was out for a couple of days for Irene, and for 7 days for our neighbors 2 doors down.

When I lived down south we'd have the power go out for a few days after winter ice storms or hurricanes.

We got it because we figured out the contents of our chest freezer was worth the cost of a generator.

26560. arkymalarky - 9/23/2011 3:24:14 AM

and having water when you use a well is priceless after a few hours, much less days

26561. iiibbb - 9/27/2011 3:19:10 PM

I'd think you could get a battery backup for your well to cover a few hours.

26562. arkymalarky - 9/27/2011 4:09:01 PM

Hmm. Never heard of that.

26563. iiibbb - 9/27/2011 4:38:38 PM

Neither have I, but it seems like it should be possible.

26564. iiibbb - 9/27/2011 5:07:09 PM

Well.. there are for sump pumps, but I guess there is too much head to draw for a well for it to work... or at least make an cost-effective, efficient system.

Let's get at least one thread in the current month....

26566. Ms. No - 11/3/2011 3:16:20 AM

At least it's only the 2nd and not like, the day before Thanksgiving or something.

I mean to come in and post, but the last few months have been so icky that I don't want to just come rant and whine.

On an awesome note, my brother's in town tonight. I have no idea where we're going to eat, but mostly I'm just thrilled to see him and catch up.

It's been super windy but not all that cool. Allergies are insane. Whee!

26567. arkymalarky - 11/3/2011 3:40:27 AM

Rant any time! My life is so (thankfully) routine right now I don't have much to post about.

26568. iiibbb - 11/3/2011 2:45:07 PM

I had a job interview... although if offered I might have to spend a few months away from my family. It is also a soft money position with only a couple of years guaranteed.

The dilemma is that P can't leave her position until next May because she has already promised to teach next semester. These guys want someone by January. But at least I'm in the mix for a change.

There is also a high likelihood that I will get a local interview for a 1-yr term that opens other doors; but the job is not as good.

I will be glad to have a choice--- don't know which to pick. Want to move away from here, like the opportunity the other job gives.... would hate the disruption of being separated.

Well we just went through another major storm and lost power for 3 days this time. Hubby and I will be spending weeks cleaning up the mess of all the downed trees in our yard. Fortunately none of them hit anything important. Friends of ours one town over are not so lucky...they most likely will be out a week from this storm and a branch shot through their garage roof and down into the floor! Fortunately no one and no cars were injured.

We had about 10" of snow on top of trees that were still well leaved. What a mess. The last time we had this much snow in october was....never!

And now we have people dying from CO poisoning as they are trying to keep themselves and their houses warm. But I mean, come on people, you don't use a hibachi in the house! They should encourage a CO detector be sold with every generator though.

Some schools will be closed all week, using up snow days before the winter has even begun.

What craziness!

26570. judithathome - 11/3/2011 9:08:32 PM

It's "cold" here....53°...which I realize is laughable when compared to real cold weather.

I expect a brutal winter...and of course, the climate change deniers will say it's just business as usual.
