The then-future Mrs. Ohio and I spent the blizzard of 1978 snowed in together at my Newton apartment.

(And in case you're wondering, our first child was not born until 1981.)

26728. Ms. No - 1/12/2012 7:10:46 AM

Said child's accomplishments showing that the three years of practice paid off. ;->

26729. OhioSTOPAS - 1/13/2012 2:36:24 PM

Practice makes perfect! (Although in my case, not yet . . .)

26730. thoughtful - 1/13/2012 3:13:32 PM

Blizzard of '78. Hubby and I spent the blizzard at each other's house keeping the home fires burning and each other's fire burning...we weren't married until June that year, and as fate would have it, my parents were enjoying a week in sunny Jamaica. Was also very helpful that we lived next door to each other so it was only a snowy walk across the field to the other's house.

What a lovely unexpected time together. Sigh.

How romantic!

26732. iiibbb - 1/21/2012 5:35:51 AM

I don't know if this is normal or not. He's only 2... and although he's doing a little bit of sight reading, he also seems to know words we've not show him. Although he didn't quite get it in the video, right before the video I swear he sounded out "Kitty" on his own. This is also the longest string of words he's put together in one sitting; long enough that we had time to get the recorder going and he was still performing.

Really exciting.

26733. arkymalarky - 1/21/2012 6:09:24 AM

It's not common but mose read before she turned 3. She's always had great written and verbal skill and your son probably will too.

26734. thoughtful - 1/21/2012 5:01:55 PM

I started reading when I was 3 and used to read stories to my own kindergarten class....then they had me skip 1st grade.

26735. arkymalarky - 1/21/2012 7:50:42 PM

Yes, they quit doing that in most public schools. Mose was put in enrichment which got less valuable as she got older. But early reading and writing are not criteeia for those programs. They were going to skip my 1st grade year but I was physically way smaller than my kindergarten classmates. Sure don't have that problem now.

26736. arkymalarky - 1/22/2012 4:42:47 AM

I could not stand it to nov. if gingrich got the nomination. What an insufferable, arrogant drip.

26737. arkymalarky - 1/22/2012 4:46:27 AM

Ooh. Thought this was the politics thread. Sorry.

26738. arkymalarky - 1/22/2012 6:31:30 AM

To post on the subj above, I also read at 3 which is why I was so far ahead in kindergarten.

26739. wabbit - 1/22/2012 5:03:03 PM

I was always thankful that my mother refused to have me skip any grades. I was the youngest in my class as it was.

Over in the Mote thread at TPW, Cal says:
But Pelle, why don't you post here? No one bites.

Haha....pretty much everyone bites at TPW. Since pretty much all the non-conservatives got tired of the biting and left the conservatives have had to resort to gnawing on each other.

26741. arkymalarky - 1/31/2012 5:14:40 AM

I was so glad Pelle updated us. Sounds like life is going great for him.

26742. arkymalarky - 1/31/2012 5:21:20 AM

This is what's great about small town life:
Stan had to license the civic and he was late and our friend at the revenue office called the courthouse to see if we'd assessed our taxes, which of course we hadn't, and she assessed for us on the phone. So for once we don't owe a late assessment fee.

Ha! They STILL have a Mote thread? How high school can ya get!

(No offense to your students, Arky and MsNo!)

26744. iiibbb - 1/31/2012 9:54:34 PM

What is TPW.

I never understood why everyone left.

26745. iiibbb - 1/31/2012 9:57:48 PM

I prefer the small cadre of the mote, and always liked its diversity. I don't like most political websites because of the trolling, and you just can't get to "know" anyone well enough to have a complete conversation.

The only thing I didn't like about the mote was trying to jump back in the stream if you walked away for too long. You could get 100 posts behind something quick... all while 2-5 conversations were going on at the same time.

26746. judithathome - 1/31/2012 11:44:15 PM

By the way, 3i3b, I think it's great that your son can read!

My son was very articulate by age 3...I chalked it up to me reading aloud to him whatever book I was, at the time, reading.

We went on a long trip with him to Colorado when he was three and we drove a Corvair...I'd made him a little "pallet" in the back seat which folded down and expected him to sleep back there (pre seat-belt era) and instead, he stood in the back between our two bucket seats and talked the entire time.

I was amazed at one point when he said "Look...the sky and the clouds are reflected on the hood of the car!" To me, it was amazing in both language usage and in the concept of him recognizing what a reflection was.
