psychprof,

The old Fray was to me a unique experiment. A challenge and learning experience. Fondly recalled and referenced.

The Slate of today is a far removed from the old days.

The only one I care to look into is John Dickerson.

Thanks, thoughtful, for the lovely scene...and I have a request:

If memory serves, an iffy thing for me these days, you built a fabulous house a couple of years ago. I'm wondering if in the process you came across any books or other sources that were particularly helpful.

My son and his wife are happy with their location in Houston but want a new and bigger house. They are planning to do a teardown and rebuild and, I think, act as their own general contractor/construction superintendent/whatever.

I want to give them a couple of fairly recent books that might be useful for owner/builders.

Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you for the kind words.

When it comes to home design, I highly recommend the "not so big house" books by Sarah Suzanka....even if they want a larger home, the design principles she teaches are incredibly valuable for making a house a home...site design, using light and spaces, making larger rooms feel cozy, making small rooms feel larger...all excellent.

There is a small book on "be your own contractor" which gives you a lot of the basics for what to think about and what to know.

However, the big thing to know is, that if you talk to a sub, they will tell you what works best for them, which may not always work best for the next sub...a GC will give you a better overall point of view.

I would suggest having them get onto gardenweb.com....under home design, there is a thread on building a new home.....people there are incredibly helpful.

I would also have them consider finding a contractor with home building experience who would be willing to act as a consultant on the project...it would be great to have someone with experience to call on for advice as the project proceeds...

Here's a link to the home building forum....

also there is a home decor forum where there are a lot of interior designers and such who are really helpful.

the kitchen thread is also very helpful for kitchen design which is a whole 'nother ball of wax.....

Just saw Lincoln....really good movie....couldn't help but compare and contrast with W. Really! How could we? Maybe a first term, but a second????

Watched 121212 concert last night...what a line up....how fabulous! I'll be anxious to hear how much money they raised...

Lincoln got 7 Golden Globe noms, I think...multiple ones, anyhow.

Bought only thecthird American car I've ever owned the other day. A Ford C-Max hybrid. I'm really looking forward to my long commute being a lot more enjoyable--and cheaper. Not that it will offset the expense of buying a car. But since I traded one payment for another, hopefully it won't be too painful.

Hard to type on the phone with a Band-Aid on your thumb. Voice to text is easier.
