Our school is so small that we don't have any electives other than the Medical Science classes which are a required part of our curriculum so they aren't really "elective" even though that's how they count on the transcript.

Our kids meet on Wednesdays after school from 3:45 to 5:30. For the last two years we've been partnered with a non-profit program that promotes literacy through poetry and creative writing so they're the ones that publish our book. Our students have been out to a bunch of events to perform their work, and I've really watched them grow as writers.

They presented at a dinner for Dolores Huerta earlier this month and at the end of the evening they had almost as many fans wanting pictures with them as she did. It's had a tremendous effect on their self esteem and confidence.

Most of these kids live in the projects. Nobody wants to hear what they have to say --- nobody thinks they have anything worth saying. To see a crowd of strangers rapt by their words has been really empowering for them. I know for a fact that this program has convinced some of them to go to college when they never believed that they would've belonged there.

It's truly been one of the best things I've been involved with as a teacher.

That's so great. It's truly Why I love my job.

Ms. No,

That is incredible!! I love it! Maybe you could talk with the community newspaper and/or the person in charge of the school's marquee and ask for camera donations. I bet some of those kids are naturally good photographers. It would be great to feature some of their artistic endeavors outside of prose and poetry. Here (until this year!) we showcased paiting, jewelry making, photography, drawing and pastel work in addition to short stories and poetry.

Your kids sound awesome - they're lucky to have you! :)

Received a postcard in the mail announcing a birthday celebration on the same day as my birthday...it's for the family-owned, family-operated grocery store at the top of the hill. They've been around for 70 years, just like me.

It's a small little store that caters to the richie riches who live nearby...they have gourmet items, really expensive locally grown produce, outrageously priced meats...some exotic..and they will order anything for you if they don't have it. They do home delivery and some families have used them exclusively since they opened. About 20 years ago, they opened a catering section and nearly every society party for years was catered by this little mom and pop business.

My son worked there during high school, delivering groceries to indolent housewives too lazy to go to the store themselves.

I say props to them for remaining open for all these years...that's not easy, especially for a food store.

How neat! Are you going?

27279. judithathome - 4/27/2013 8:24:13 PM

Yeah, I think we'll drop by!

My g*d-daughter, born in Lyon in 1995, was queen of her prom this weekend (Charlotte, NC)

She's going on to Appalachian State in Boone to study industrial design.

27281. arkymalarky - 4/29/2013 11:42:29 PM

Beautiful people! Which one is she?

27282. arkymalarky - 4/29/2013 11:42:57 PM

Duh. I see the crown now.

27283. arkymalarky - 4/29/2013 11:43:34 PM

And the sash. I need to start wearing my contacts.

27284. robertjayb - 5/1/2013 7:58:21 PM

Well, well. Made in past noon without spouse's annual chant: "Hooray hooray, the first of May. Outdoor intercourse starts today." Good.

27285. Ms. No - 5/2/2013 7:22:08 AM

Damn. I totally forgot about that.

27286. thoughtful - 5/2/2013 12:33:50 PM

RJB, you're a little late...the geese have been at it for awhile and I saw a pair go by with 7 of the cutest little goslings....

27287. robertjayb - 5/2/2013 4:00:56 PM

Sure enough, at about 9:30 last night she came out with it. Brrrr. Seems an odd phrase to be adopted by a Wisconsinite.

Here in Texas I've always heard that sort of thing is best accomplished on a warmish summer night with at least a bit of moonlight. That's what I've been told

27288. arkymalarky - 5/4/2013 9:13:37 PM

happy birthday Judith!

27289. arkymalarky - 5/5/2013 2:38:40 AM

27291. thoughtful - 5/6/2013 3:57:38 PM

Oh Happy Belated Bday! Hope it was just fine!

27292. judithathome - 5/8/2013 5:16:07 AM

MsNo, if you are checking in here while in Hawaii, which I seriously doubt you are...someone who found your phone called me on it yesterday.
