Temperature has gone up, mid 20's now. Judging by the top rail on my deck, we got a solid foot of snow overnight and it's still snowing. The current prediction is that it will be over sometime early this afternoon, and then I can go out and clear the deck, again. No need to join a gym this winter. I borrowed a sledgehammer to break up the ice on my front stoop and after two go-rounds, haven't been able to get down to the bricks yet. Still have power, amazingly.

wow, you're really lucky to have power. With ice like that it's amazing. I'm sure you're being careful, but be careful.

Got in from shoveling about an hour ago. My foot estimate was off, I was thinking maybe 18", but the town says officially we got 21". My deck is clear, more or less, and my car is as dug out as it needs to be for me to get out on Tuesday...when we are expecting another 3-5" of snow.

One of the young guys who come around and shovel the walks broke up the ice for me, bless him. I am down to the bricks - which I immediately covered with salt. Not good for the brick, but it helps keep the ice at bay.

As near as I can tell, I'm the only one who has bothered to knock the huge icicles down from above my front door. Don't need one of those coming down on me or the guys.

We have heavy, wet ice and no electricity. So glad to have an unconnected generator sitting in our garage gathering dust. The ice shouldn't last, but it's still breaking limbs. If it's heading your way as I heard, it's a good bit of moisture.

Guess I'll be out of school tomorrow. We were already out today for Pres Day, but no elec still. Roads are fine, but trees are not.

28456. arkymalarky - 2/17/2015 2:22:03 AM

We're supposed to start at ten, but unless I get elec tonight I'm not going. Mose is out, but they have snow and electricity. Meanwhile I keep rotating devices off of the car charger.

28457. arkymalarky - 2/18/2015 1:41:56 AM

stayed home today. They didn't have electricity for at least part of the day. We're still out. Stan got gas in the generator, and we can use an extension cord, but can't run the heater. I just hope our propane holds out. as little precipitation is we got, it really seems strange to be out like this. Trees are broken.

Everywhere.

28459. arkymalarky - 2/18/2015 1:51:14 AM

no water either, since we were on well pump and it can't be plugged into the generator. Will have to do some wiring next year for stuff like that. wabbit, have y'all started getting more stuff yet?

Hell yeah, another 4" today. Weird snow. looks like Hollywood snow. Many many pipes burst at work over the weekend, sounds like a waterfall out in the back of the shipping area. Supposed to "warm up" to low 30's over the weekend, which means rain on Sunday - not good news for the roof.

At home I'm fine. Not warm, but fine. I decided to go with four little oil filled radiators in key locations this winter instead of the crazy expensive heat pump. Still getting $500/mo electric bills, but based on kWh I'd be at well over $800/mo with the heat pump, plus having to keep the damn thing clear of snow. No chance of even using it now, the snow piled up on top of it is at the level of my deck. Can't even get to it, never mind clear it off.

Looking at gravity feed pellet stoves for next year. Won't need power to stay warm or prevent pipes from freezing.

Stan's brother in law had one of those, & I think they're really good. He had it out on the porch, so it was not bad in the house. I don't know how they exhaust all that stuff out, because I can't have wood heat because of allergies. Sounds like wood pellets would work great for your situation.

"which means rain on Sunday - not good news for the roof."

Hope it doesn't freeze or isn't freezing rain, but it's hard to see how it wouldn't be. That's so deadly.

Friend of a friend has been putting bubble wrap over windows, the clear kind used for packing. I tried it in a few places and notice the difference.

I like insulated drapes at night, but during days I want my sunlight! The bubble wrap lets in light but stops some of the heat loss.

Our county has been pretty much closed for the last two days, and I wonder about tomorrow. There is a sheet of ice all over everything that doesn't melt, the temps don't get high enough.

I had agreed to go fill in last minute for someone who needed help at home with an elderly relative while they went to work, with a reservation that we'd have to see what conditions were like this morning. I ended up regretfully cancelling this morning because it started snowing again, and I doubted my ability to get back home, up several hills. They have some college-age kids who can stay at home and do the job just as well as I could, but more comfortably if they end up stuck there overnight.

Which leads me to think about the headache of staffing some of the local community homes for clients with intellectual and mental disabilities, and the nursing homes ... imagine being trapped in a house far up a hill, working a shift that was planned for 8 hours, but then seemingly never ends, with a manic-schizophrenic who never sleeps, and you'd better not sleep while they're awake... God bless the people who do that difficult work for incredibly low pay

(along with all those utility workers who try to keep the power on)

Frozen Niagara Falls

28467. judithathome - 2/18/2015 10:13:26 PM

...and I hate to mention: I have the windows open and the doors, too.

28468. arkymalarky - 2/18/2015 11:43:15 PM

Our forecast: Friday freezing rain, high in low 30s. Saturday thunderstorms, high in 60s.

28469. arkymalarky - 2/19/2015 12:46:19 AM

I ended up staying home today, tho I'd planned to go. We're still out of power. On our way to get Spook from the airport, and it would be too good if it were on when we got home. The generator keeps us in devices and other necessities, and propane keeps us warm, but no water sucks.

28470. judithathome - 2/19/2015 7:47:26 PM

You can always run up to the truck stop for a shower...heh!

Seriously, it's no laughing matter...just hope this doesn't last as long as "the Great Ice Storm"!
