The Fray was my first foray into online communication and the only one I really enjoyed. We had our 15th gathering this year and I got the idea from lemwalker, but I can't call up any timeline in my mind. The internet was new to my job and nonexistent at home, and if I recall we were one of the early schools to get internet. I ended up getting dial up at home just because of the Fray. That was back before any real graphics of any sort, much less my beloved flash room escape games. I also had the most laid back schedule I think I've ever had in my career. Lots of time to play on the Fray. Dad of course had internet, living in town, and he's the one who suggested I should check out the Fray. It never did really float his boat, but he thought I would like it. I need to look at archives. I know Mose was like 12 or 13 and we had just built our house. In retrospect it can also be seen that the energetic naivete we all exhibited was inevitably doomed, that monetization would become the prevailing characteristic of web endeavours, and creepy surveillance sytems would soom pervade. It was a hell of a thrill while that pre-Google dawn lasted, however. I do not find it surprising that many individual posters familiar from that time have become notorious via the web, while others have chosen to disengage entirely. 28652. I have great memories and has made some of my best lifelong friends here, even ones I don't see anymore.
A lot of people are in other areas, and the internet has not done much for many people to gain them fame or success through forums. It's just too pervasive now, and far more specified. A general online community by nature becomes more insular, so it is hard to maintain a breadth and depth over time. But it's done a lot to help most of us in many other areas. It has been indispensable in helping me organize on the state and local level for rural education and gave me a lot of perspective that I didn't have before that helped me communicate more effectively in organizing. IOW the impact has been significant, but not direct point A to point B.
The most pleasant group and the most diverse that I know of now is on escape games 24. Some smart, mature, mostly self-moderating people and the focus is totally different, but working together from all over the world to find out where the screwdriver or key is is a pretty cool thing. A lot of the discussion forums out there are just so much more specified now. But they can be pretty fun. I've gotten a lot out of the ones on tech that I need, particularly with regard to android.

How many of your "real life" friends were sure you were going to be abducted and chopped into little pieces if you dared to actually meet any of those "online people" in person?

My little family is doing Ok, our boys Golden Birthday was this past June. He's looking forward to 6th grade!
Drums were set up in the basement a month ago, nothing going yet. Thankful for a slow go for now. He can play some piano and viola, and the bells, base or snare drum a little. But, the video games, ohhhh they are the sneaky little devils.
The oldest is off in Sweden and back soon. She's doing fine.
I just learned about arthritis in the knee, but I'm too young yet and am putting it in its place.
My wife and I celebrated 31 yrs yesterday the 3rd.
Met here at Macalester College, and I was going to the U of M. We both ended up at Southern Ill. Univ at Carbondale and became Salukis.

Happy anniversary! Stan and I will celebrate our 32nd in October. So glad to hear how well your kids are doing. I remember when your little boy was born. Mose will be 31 in November. When I first found the Fray, I didn't have a place to communicate my desires to focus world attention upon rapid deforestation in Sarawak, Borneo Malaysia. I did some fruitless posts, knowing there was no power. I did learn of "Bruno Manser" who sought to risk all to bring the clear cutting rampage going on. Bruno lived with the Penan. I safely married a Sarawakian, here in the U.S.. I learned of the problem in 1989 from my first visit.
In a vague way, I thought Irv, moving in circles connected to Macalester, Indonesia and worldly people, had an insight about what concerned me. Nothing went anywhere. Alistair sought to learn, and Marjori too, but it wasn't a big deal. It's all over the Sarawakian news now, so it's made it to the front of their media. Some day it might make it here? Oil Palm is getting attention for it being the main cause for rampant deforestation.
I've blogged almost zero, and I've written so extensively all over HuffPo, AlterNet, Kos, Mother Jones, and most recently rebuttals to radical racists on MSN News. I'm astounded at the blatant racism that rears hatred on that site.

Stan's Malaysian niece-in-law and nephew are visiting from FL right now. My brother is heavy into environmental issues and posts a lot elsewhere. I stay away from other discussion boards after spending 24-7 on rural éducation issues statewide for a number of years.
