Haha!

Every May I get nostalgic for the three seasons I spent in Kodiak processing seafood. I love Alaska and wish I could afford to visit regularly.

vonK, you can have it...I found very little to attract me there. We saw a lot, learned a lot. But as our tour guide suggested, the crazies who can't make it in Vermont end up in AK!

I love AR, but the summer months are getting unbearable. Between bad allergies, mosquitos, and the humidity that aggravates both, it's hard to enjoy how beautiful it is. This has been aild, wet summer, but usually the heat on top of the humidity is suffocating. I can imagine moving to CO. Beautiful views, low maintenance yard, laid back environment, rural but with plenty to do. Our 3acre yard takes Stan hours to mow and manicure.

A mild...

In the tradition of British aristocrats, you could always get a tiny herd of sheep to keep your grass in line.

28862. Ms. No - 9/3/2016 7:27:59 PM

I suppose it's a "flock" and not a herd.

Goats come in herds.

How 'bout some pygmy goats?

28863. arkymalarky - 9/3/2016 11:19:21 PM

People do that around here, but my current line that I'm pursuing is getting the Colorado house ready to live in and being a snowbird like Robert.

28864. arkymalarky - 9/3/2016 11:20:41 PM

Pygmies might not be able to do it, but big goats will climb on your vehicle. I would like to have some though, and learn how to make goat cheese and goat soap

28865. thoughtful - 9/4/2016 11:46:16 PM

Can you let some of it go to whatever it goes to in AR? We have 11 acres, but the majority is wooded and we let to go natural.

28866. arkymalarky - 9/5/2016 1:17:38 AM

We have over 100, but the three acres is our yard. It has a barn and shed and fruit trees, other various trees and shrubs, etc. The Rest was planted pines that just sold for Stan's mother in the nursing home. Right now that part is clear-cut and brush. We'll buy about seven or eight more Acres in the next year or so, but we won't do anything with it. It has a creek, and an old house place that no trees grow on that was lived in after about 1815 or so.

28867. arkymalarky - 9/5/2016 1:20:57 AM

If we let too much go behind our house, ticks and mosquitoes just dominate in the yard as well. It's tall grass and brush and a lot of deer and rabbits, etc, which command our yard, but the taller the grass the more mosquiteos especially and also ticks just take over. I'm being eaten alive even as I voice to text just sitting on the porch.

Arx,

I got a great book for Christmas called "One-Hour Cheese" a year and a half ago. I'm still excited about it, but I haven't actually made any cheese. I like to page through it and dream.

Three Christmases ago the family all gathered at a beach house in wine and cheese country and a few of us went and toured a goat farm. My uncle's husband wants a couple of goats, but they still live in the city in D.C. Once he retires they plan to move to where they can have a little land. I've volunteered to come house and goat-sit when they travel.

One of Stan's former principals has goats and they make goat soap. I don't know if they make goat cheese...

28873. arkymalarky - 9/11/2016 7:44:30 PM

Their goat soap is wonderful

Hey...Happy Birthday to the Mote!

I remember posting on 9/11 while watching the second plane hit the tower...

And remember saying "we are at war, people..."
