Arky - I don't doubt grandparenthood is tops. Congratulations!

No - 18 it is. I think I've been in touch with this forum's members for around 22 years now! that's rather a long time...

Hello all,

My twins are 17 years old and it is both saddening and exciting to help them plan their migration from our home to college. It is also daunting WRT the cost! Oy, I hope they can make the most of it.

29051. Ms. No - 3/8/2018 1:12:10 AM

behl - yes, 22 years is nearly half a lifetime...or maybe exactly half a lifetime for either you or Jen if I remember correctly.

Winston - good to see you! How far from home will they be?

29052. winstonsmith - 3/8/2018 9:04:33 AM

Thanks Ms No,

We don’t know yet. We are in Portland OR and they could end up on the east coast or somewhere in-state. It will be an exiting time for them. I expect they will go to different schools since their interests are different.

My nephew is probably going to Nothern Colorado.

He was looking at Idaho -- he likes the wide open spaces because of time spent in Wyoming with his grandparents -- but I think he was a little put off by the lack of diversity and the prospect of being a little blue dot in a sea of red.

Ms No, you previously mentioned that the country needs an enema. I'm hoping that in 2020, Trump gets squeezed out the backside of America.

29055. Ms. No - 3/9/2018 10:56:41 PM

Word!

29056. bhelpuri - 3/14/2018 3:47:42 PM

No - I turned 50 this last month. hard (for me) to believe, but there you have it. the days in 1995 (I think) when some of us first came online together feel like several lifetimes past, not just half of one.

Winston - my oldest is a high school junior, and we too are now preparing to let go. In our case he will almost certainly be leaving the country which is quite tough to consider...good luck with your double bet!

29057. bhelpuri - 3/14/2018 3:48:13 PM

I wager AC is a grandpapa at this point!

29058. Ms. No - 3/14/2018 6:07:29 PM

Happy belated! I get my half-century next year, but I agree on all fronts that I neither feel remotely old enough to be that old AND that '95 seems a million years ago.

29059. winstonsmith - 3/14/2018 9:12:39 PM

Thanks Bhel, good luck to you too. The move to another country will be a added challenge but perhaps give you the opportunity to go and visit.

I can't recall what year I joined The Fray. I recall that they sent me an umbrella so it was whenever it was that they were doing that.

29061. bhelpuri - 3/15/2018 11:24:05 AM

The umbrella was probably 97, when (the late) Irving Snodgrass was secretly FrayVader. Over 20 years ago!

29062. winstonsmith - 3/15/2018 7:44:23 PM

Thanks bhel, that sounds about right.

29063. Ms. No - 3/16/2018 6:01:40 PM

I just remember the first conversation I joined --- it was about the four kids in Florida who stole a stop sign and then there was a fatal car accident.

29064. arkymalarky - 3/17/2018 10:23:03 AM

I posted to correct rubber ducky, whatever his ID was at the time I forget, when he abbreviated Arkansas AK. They were all arguing about how evil Bill Clinton was.

Seamus --

End of term is June 15, so I've got a little ways to go yet. Senioritis has hit in full force, but I'm really going to miss this group of seniors.

I'm working with the Sophomore teachers on their big end-of-year project too. We're trying to re-create the Medicins Sans Frontiers refugee experience camp. This will be the first year that we do it, but I'm really excited about it. --- Makes me want to teach 10th grade again!

In other news --- my mom went in for surgery on a broken femur from a fall she had in the subway and ended up having a stroke. She's doing okay now --- regained speech and mobility --- but they're keeping her in the hospital through Friday before she moves to an in-patient rehab facility for a couple weeks to begin the PT for her leg.

That was the course of my weekend --- every two minutes I'd wonder "Is this the moment I'll remember for the rest of my life as what I was doing when I got the news..."

I've spoken with her twice since the stroke -- most recently yesterday evening and she sounded in good spirits. She was alert and cracking jokes and I couldn't discern any speech impediment.

I'm not ready for my mom to be old or an invalid. I don't suppose anyone is ever ready for that, but it's just a constant recurring shock that my mother had a stroke --- regardless the fact that it was an adverse reaction to surgery rather than an organic cause.

So, I'm hoping for a full recovery and trying to be positive and stay calm, but I think I won't be easy again until I see her for myself and witness her recovery.

29067. Seamus - 5/10/2018 9:19:23 PM

I’m certainly wishing for a full and speedy recovery for your mother, Ms. No. It sounds as if she’s headed in the correct direction. And yes, I hope you can take some comfort from the idea that it was a trauma-plus-surgery combination that brought on her stroke as compared to some underlying organic cause. I don’t know how much assurance that brings to you, but I know it would do so for me.

It seems not to matter our age, but when we fall, there is somehow hell to pay for it. Our bodies must have been designed to be upright and in motion. Whenever either of those conditions aren’t met, it almost seems as if there’s an additional entropic penalty assessed on us. I don’t remember those instructions appearing in the owner’s manual, but there you have it.

In any event, I’m glad to hear that she is progressing in her recovery.

29068. Ms. No - 5/11/2018 3:57:54 PM

Thank you. She's better every day now --- she actually moved to the rehab facility Wednesday night, so things are going very well.

I've always thought our propensity for toppling over is why children are so short. Not sure what to say about the loss of balance and strength that accompanies old age, except that when the model was first designed, the modern longevity perhaps wasn't anticipated?

Or maybe it's just to teach us humility.
