40360. wonkers2 - 11/20/2008 5:48:57 AM Good points. 40361. jexster - 11/20/2008 6:10:30 AM No sooner had I read an AP report that Roemer was on the short list for Homeland Securator
Janet Napolitano
AP also had him down for National Intel Director
Things not lookin good for my fat govt pension plan plans 40362. jexster - 11/20/2008 6:11:01 AM GM need a lobbyist?
Driven a Ford lately Wonk? 40363. jexster - 11/20/2008 6:17:38 AM Penny Pritzker - Commerce Secretary 40364. jexster - 11/20/2008 6:29:13 PM Holy Crap
Rep. Henry Waxman (D) has ousted John Dingell (D) as Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
That's a hugely big deal on any number of levels -- not least of which is the two men's very different positions on energy policy. We'll have more soon.

Happy Day! 40365. jexster - 11/20/2008 6:32:57 PM Pelosi for Senate Majority Leader 40366. jexster - 11/20/2008 6:37:43 PM GM - a Bank with a Manufacturing Operation - Seeks TARP Bailout 40367. jexster - 11/20/2008 6:57:19 PM Totally toxic ...G20 Leaders wouldn't shake his hand
"like he's got the cooties"
40368. wonkers2 - 11/20/2008 7:02:27 PM The care companies have made plenty of mistakes, the most recent one flying to D.C. separately in three company planes. However, it would be only fair to remember how quickly Congress and Bush came up with $700 billion for Wall Street and the Banking industry and another $200? billion or so for AIG. By comparison, $25 billion for GM, Ford and Chrysler is a bargain. A lot of people will be hurt if a couple of the American car companies go down. And that would mean a deeper and longer recession. 40369. anomie - 11/20/2008 7:09:29 PM Right or wrong, Americans hold on to symbols regardless of the key issues, or in spite of them, (Joe the Auto CEO?). So this private jet business has a huge impact in showing how out of touch these guys are. It pissed me off too. 40370. jexster - 11/20/2008 7:10:08 PM I guess the News hasn't made it to St. Clair Shores
Big Three lashed, denied
A year-end drive to win new aid for the ailing auto industry is all but dead in Congress.
40371. jexster - 11/20/2008 7:14:23 PM There is a REAL political danger for the Democrats in granting ANY more bailouts to anyone. There is huge anger on both the right, left and in the middle, consumers who are losing jobs, houses, medical benefits, medicaid benefits, facing state tax increases and service cuts of all kinds
Democrats love to play on this lofty intellectual level - the debate has been solely in these terms - but the people outside the beltway and in academia don't buy this shit
All they see is billions going to Detroit and Darien and rich people asking for more.
Economic populism, stymied on the right by culture war, has yet to fully emerge but it will soon as economic conditions worsen
Bailouts mark this - the new third rail for any who wish to touch it
Trickle down economics by another name 40372. jexster - 11/20/2008 7:16:53 PM They should look across the aisle at their opposition and smile especially if the Dems throw more billions at corporate failures
Senate GOP in big funk
Down to 42 seats with two still at risk, the Senate GOP is in a deep funk
I suggest Honkers take his buddies down to the Big Rock Chop House for a few last pitchers of martinis and porterhouse steaks 40373. jexster - 11/20/2008 7:20:37 PM How can the Big Three win on the Hill?
Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform:
They should wear ski masks.
Galling isn't it? But Dems would do well do inwardly digest the snark from the decades greatest K St shakedown artist
Economic populism is the GOP's ticket to ride back into power 40374. jexster - 11/20/2008 7:24:25 PM Unless they can figure a way to hide the salami in some omibus recovery package, say Tata to GM. Wonkers in-laws will be carrying the proud crest of the House of W2 40375. jexster - 11/20/2008 7:36:37 PM Kiss of death
“They don’t have a lot of chits here. They have people who are upset at them,” Reid told Politico. “I want to help them. It’s not the companies. I want to help the workers. That’s where I am. The people who work there deserve our attention. But the path has been laid by these bosses who came here yesterday on their corporate jets. ... They all flew down here in their corporate jets. It’s just not the right picture.”
Same spin structure as his Lieberman bullshit
"Oh I really hate what he did but" 40376. arkymalarky - 11/20/2008 7:59:20 PM I agree with Krugman. Fine if they fall in anotheer time, but not now. It's plain stupid to risk jobs right now and save investment banks. 40377. jexster - 11/20/2008 8:14:14 PM That's bullshit and Krugman knows it.
They wouldn't fail when times were "fine" 40378. jexster - 11/20/2008 8:17:06 PM But that's not the point...the people are sick of rich people getting bailouts while they suffer
Sick of financing autoworkers' blue ribbon health packages when their benefits are disappearing or being slashed.
In no mood to save auto jobs when nobody gives a shit about their jobs
Krugman rails against trickle down economics some of the time 40379. jexster - 11/20/2008 8:18:34 PM And that's why a straight up slop of the Detroit piggery ain't gonna happen
They've got to figure out a way to mask the odor
