I guess it's what I get for calling someone dumb. 45629. judithathome - 7/24/2013 4:41:49 PM Rep. Steve King shows his true colors and two Republicans (Boehner and Kantor) comment. I'm amazed they said anything; the normal thing for Republicans these days is to ignore these goof balls and let every trashy thing they claim stand without rebuttal: Steve King Compares Dreamers to Drug Mules
"For everyone who's a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert," King recently told Newsmax. "Those people would be legalized with the same act."
King insisted the claim is "not something that I'm making up" in an interview with Radio Iowa on Tuesday.

Trillium - 9/12/2013 10:14:01 PM During the discussions of the Zimmerman trial, it occurred to me to post a link about an unusual and awful crime that occurred in Tennessee back in 2007.
I never did post about it because the 2007 crime was horrific, unusual for that area, gruesome to think about or discuss, and in many ways distant from the Zimmerman/Martin confrontation.
There were two reasons why I would have linked about the crime: First of all, the parents of the victims have been resolute in refusing to allow hate groups to use this crime to incite more hate or violence.
What the parents have said, though, is that self-defense is important. Gun rights are a part of that. Few people could have imagined that what was initially a carjacking/theft would have turned so unspeakably violent and ugly. After the fact, many wished the victims could have fought hard, and early, or been armed to protect themselves.
The father of Channon Christian recently asked that people publicize the case more widely. He was invited to speak about it with Glenn Beck.
Mr. Beck got it wrong following the interview; he declared that no major groups had approached the parents to tell their story. That isn't quite true. The national news wouldn't cover the story (or the neverending trial -- the character flaws of the drug-addicted judge and resulting mistrial are a whole other topic feeding distrust and disgust with the justice system).
However, hate groups did approach the families of the victims, and the Newsom and Christian families refused to participate in inciting hate, to their great credit.
I don't know Mr. Christian personally, but from what I have read and heard over the last several years, I respect his forebearance and if anyone has a right to speak out, it is him (and the other parents). Following is a link to the information about what happened to his daughter and her boyfriend in 2007, unprovoked. Be warned, it's like a horror movie.
I take this case into consideration when I consider gun rights (as well as the prison system, how does it happen that children might grow up to be pathologically violent adults? and much more).

An Austin appeals court has overturned the conviction of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on charges related to a scheme to influence Texas elections, DeLay's attorney said Thursday.
The vote by the 3rd Court of Appeals in Austin was 2-1, said Brian Wice, the Houston attorney who represented DeLay in his appeal.
DeLay's three-year prison sentence has been on hold as his case has made its way through the appellate process.
Delay was convicted of illegally channeling $190,000 in corporate donations to Republicans running for the Texas Legislature. State law prohibits corporate campaign contributions to local races.
A jury in Austin found that DeLay's actions-collecting checks, moving the funds through a political action committee and distributing the donations to state candidates-violated state money-laundering statutes.

45634. robertjayb - 9/19/2013 4:34:12 PM Of course...
It was a 2 – 1 vote. The two Republicans voted with Tom. The one Democrat did not.
(Juanitajean.com) 45635. judithathome - 9/19/2013 7:23:37 PM I wonder how much he paid those two..... 45636. arkymalarky - 9/21/2013 12:14:38 AM the GOP is just psycho. I've never seen anything like it, and I don't think I've ever said that before. They're really out of their tree. it's unbelievable that people teased about Hillary Clinton being the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. She's nothing compared to the GOP. They don't even know when they've been decapitated. they'd send this country and everyone in it to hell in order to get their way. Piss on a democratic system, piss on majority rule, piss on everything but their way. Nut jobs. Total nut jobs. 45637. judithathome - 9/21/2013 1:16:55 AM The nuttiest thing about it is: they are willing to send this country and everyone in it to hell in order to get their way and the upshot will be: they won't get their way!
Obama would never sign a bill that did away with his own program... 45638. robertjayb - 9/24/2013 1:20:33 AM It’s Weird Out There...
Remember how the folks on food stamps cost our country trillions by selling bets on bad mortgages to suckers?
No, that wasn’t them?
Okay, remember how poor folks got us into a war we didn’t pay for and ran up the debt?
No?
Okay, okay, remember how hungry children paid themselves $175,000 a year plus perks and health care on the taxpayers’ dime?
Well, crap, if you can’t remember that, you you have a bad case of Boehnerphobia or Itchycruz.
But thanks to Ted Cruz and John Boehner, all those hungry children are going to stop ripping off this country, dammit.
Cruz and Boehner have only one demand: reverse the results of the 2012 election or you get a great depression wrapped up with a bow on top.

Some local police forces are using this to fund up to 40% of their budget!
I had no idea that it was legal under civil statutes to just take your stuff, your money, even your house, just because....no conviction, no warrant, no nothing. I thought we fixed this back in 1776! Apparently not.
civil forfeiture 45642. judithathome - 9/24/2013 7:36:20 PM Thanks for that article...it was GREAT! 45643. arkymalarky - 9/29/2013 10:18:53 PM with apologies in advance to my texas motebuds, & a reminder that I, too, was born a Texan, after watching the shenanigans of the last week or so, I want to make a modest proposal. Give Texas Republican leadership two things that they've been repeatedly asking for: secession from the Union, and that fence they've been harping about. A fence on this side of the Texas line. 45644. arkymalarky - 9/29/2013 10:20:04 PM I'd like to see Ted Cruz in his ilk be required to have a passport and a security clearance before crossing that fence. 45645. arkymalarky - 9/29/2013 10:21:43 PM I'd also like to start a betting pool in that event over how long it will take the majority of these squawking Republicans in Texas to start trying to climb the fence to get back everything that they're enjoying from the rest of this country right now. 45646. robertjayb - 9/30/2013 2:18:50 AM No offense taken by this Texan. But I do want to observe that, like the much-despised (in some circles) Wayne La Pierre of the NRA, Cruz knows exactly what he is doing and is doing it damn well.
He is rounding up the mouth breathing knuckle-draggers to support a quixotic run for president in '16. Not a bad gig. He's young enough to make it a career. 45647. robertjayb - 9/30/2013 4:16:09 AM No offense taken by this Texan.
