Trillium - 9/12/2013 10:14:01 PM During the discussions of the Zimmerman trial, it occurred to me to post a link about an unusual and awful crime that occurred in Tennessee back in 2007.
I never did post about it because the 2007 crime was horrific, unusual for that area, gruesome to think about or discuss, and in many ways distant from the Zimmerman/Martin confrontation.
There were two reasons why I would have linked about the crime: First of all, the parents of the victims have been resolute in refusing to allow hate groups to use this crime to incite more hate or violence.
What the parents have said, though, is that self-defense is important. Gun rights are a part of that. Few people could have imagined that what was initially a carjacking/theft would have turned so unspeakably violent and ugly. After the fact, many wished the victims could have fought hard, and early, or been armed to protect themselves.
The father of Channon Christian recently asked that people publicize the case more widely. He was invited to speak about it with Glenn Beck.
Mr. Beck got it wrong following the interview; he declared that no major groups had approached the parents to tell their story. That isn't quite true. The national news wouldn't cover the story (or the neverending trial -- the character flaws of the drug-addicted judge and resulting mistrial are a whole other topic feeding distrust and disgust with the justice system).
However, hate groups did approach the families of the victims, and the Newsom and Christian families refused to participate in inciting hate, to their great credit.
I don't know Mr. Christian personally, but from what I have read and heard over the last several years, I respect his forebearance and if anyone has a right to speak out, it is him (and the other parents). Following is a link to the information about what happened to his daughter and her boyfriend in 2007, unprovoked. Be warned, it's like a horror movie.
I take this case into consideration when I consider gun rights (as well as the prison system, how does it happen that children might grow up to be pathologically violent adults? and much more).

An Austin appeals court has overturned the conviction of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on charges related to a scheme to influence Texas elections, DeLay's attorney said Thursday.
The vote by the 3rd Court of Appeals in Austin was 2-1, said Brian Wice, the Houston attorney who represented DeLay in his appeal.
DeLay's three-year prison sentence has been on hold as his case has made its way through the appellate process.
Delay was convicted of illegally channeling $190,000 in corporate donations to Republicans running for the Texas Legislature. State law prohibits corporate campaign contributions to local races.
A jury in Austin found that DeLay's actions-collecting checks, moving the funds through a political action committee and distributing the donations to state candidates-violated state money-laundering statutes.
