45902. robertjayb - 1/30/2015 8:03:17 PM Darn!
WASHINGTON - Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will not run for president in 2016.
Three weeks after unexpectedly saying he was considering a third campaign for the White House, the former Massachusetts governor told members of his staff during a Friday conference call that he is out of race. (AP) 45903. judithathome - 1/30/2015 9:39:53 PM I'm guessing all three of his supporters went over to Jeb. 45904. vonKreedon - 1/31/2015 11:08:19 PM That is disappointing, one less fat cat to fight over the fat cat money. Oh well, I'm still hopeful that Trump and/or Palin will get in for a while. 45905. judithathome - 2/2/2015 10:54:13 PM Palin had better change her meds before she comes in...the ones she's on right now are NOT beneficial.
However, I did love that she showed her ass so nakedly re: her teleprompter. Man, it was like an alien had inhabited her brain when that went down....hahahahaha!!! 45906. arkymalarky - 2/24/2015 4:39:54 PM Our new goosestepping state legislature:http://www.katv.com/story/28181989/arkansas-house-passes-bill-to-soften-social-media-protections 45907. arkymalarky - 2/24/2015 4:40:17 PM http://www.katv.com/story/28181989/arkansas-house-passes-bill-to-soften-social-media-protections 45908. arkymalarky - 2/24/2015 5:44:21 PM And here:

"Some are anti-anti-discrimination measures that would prevent a state’s cities or counties from creating protections for gay people. A prime example is SB 202 in Arkansas, which became law Monday and will go into effect later this year. Arkansas and Tennessee are the only two states in the nation with such restrictions in place, which bar jurisdictions from exceeding state law on policing discrimination. Since both states allow gay discrimination, these laws require all their local communities to allow it, also." 45910. alistairconnor - 2/26/2015 5:43:59 PM ... how does that work with respect to federal law?
Can a state ban local application of federal anti-discrimination measures? 45911. arkymalarky - 2/26/2015 9:56:55 PM I don't smoke pot, but I am all for States legalizing marijuana if that's what they want to do. So I feel like a hypocrite, saying that this law flying against national law is the basis for its failing to stand in a court if it comes to that--and I hope it does. I think federal marijuana laws need to be changed. But this is a civil rights issue, and what is happening to this state just in two months is truly shocking to me. And I've lived here since I was in the 7th grade. Eureka Springs and a few other towns had already passed non-discrimination ordinances. Eureka Springs has a unique community, very tiny, about I think 3000 residents, & it has a bug art scene, a large gay community and a large motorcycle community. I Have a good friend who owns an art studio there, and it's really unlike any place else in Arkansas. It's like a little western hippi town got transplanted right in the middle of the Ozarks. Their gay community is very important to their socio-economic structure, and for the state to tell them they are not allowed to have their anti-discrimination law is going to pit them against the old school rural conservatives in that area. And of course that will hurt economicalky, to say nothing of its unique social fabric. 45912. arkymalarky - 2/26/2015 10:29:23 PM Big art. There may be some bug art among that, but I haven't seen any.

Nancy, a beautiful human in every way, died of lung cancer. 45913. arkymalarky - 2/26/2015 10:50:04 PM To your question, the state legislature couldn't give two shits about federal law, and I have no idea how communities like ES intend to address your point. If I hear I will post. What an irony if AR state govt once again tries to face down federal law to deny equality a la Central High. It's going to be challenged, but I don't know how. Since the wave of Ed reform years ago I've purposely stayed out of state politics and quit reading state and local news. That's about to change in a big way. Yet another reason I'm considering retiring. So glad we have a place in CO. 45914. judithathome - 3/13/2015 10:39:24 PM Well, I guess you aren't very thrilled with your Senator, Arky.
I was shocked the letter to Iran wasn't drafted by an idiot from Texas....thanks for taking the heat off the nutbags in Texas, Tom Cotton! 45915. arkymalarky - 3/14/2015 2:15:14 AM He looks just like Linguini in Ratatouille.
When we moved to Arkansas when I was in 7th grade, leaing politicians were Dale Bumpers, David Pryor, Bill Clinton, William Fulbright, Wilbur Mills.
I'm telling you, it's as bad as I've ever seen it since I've lived here. there's a lot going on that I don't feel like posting it out here, but you should see the list of proposed bills for this session. The ones that passed are bad enough, but so many R of that are just unbelievable. And Tom cotton is representative of the whole situation in Arkansas, and the state legislators are trying to pass a law that will allow him to run for president while he sits in the Senate. 45916. judithathome - 3/14/2015 8:10:58 PM He'll ride that "Iraqi veteran" tag to the very end, I'd imagine.
I know it's depressing to talk about but is Arkansas pushing for that ALEC bill like Alabama (blessedly!) dumped this week: for businesses to deny service to anyone they deem "religiously" unfit...gays, different racial make-up, etc. They are claiming "religious freedom" must be upheld.
Funniest outcome of bringing that bill forward: Alabaman Wiccans sent a letter to the legislature thanking them for upholding THEIR religious freedoms! I'm certain the irony was lost on those rubes in the capitol...
Good call on "Linguini"...I'm stealing it!
45917. arkymalarky - 3/14/2015 9:10:28 PM it's very long but you ought to read the call to action response to the bill that got out of the state House committee the other day. I posted in the ed thread. It would completely dismantle AR's public education structure. The only thing I've seen approaching it is something Rachel Maddow covered a few months ago, but that was at the city level, this is for the whole state.
there's way more. More than I can talk about without spending a few hours. Just looking at the proposed bills is beyond depressing. what's so hard to believe is that although it was nothing dramatic on either side, things were so normal before January 20th. 45918. judithathome - 3/14/2015 10:05:08 PM I am deadly serious about this: you should write to Rachel Maddow...you have an insight to the state government that few have, having dealt with so many incarnations of it...I mean this...it's the sort of thing she loves to tackle! 45919. arkymalarky - 3/14/2015 10:54:51 PM thank you! I don't know, when all this happened years ago I went straight to the Gates Foundation and the Harvard ed department, while my partner started at the local level and we met in the middle with a national rural organization that standard out of DC which hired us as consultants for 3 or 4 years while we established a state wide organization. Now I've been out of it so long, I don't know where to go.I don't care for the general direction of the original group, so I don't really want to go back to working with them. But youre so right about Rachel Maddow. She's fantastic about picking up the importance of state and local issues like that. I might just do that. Surely can't hurt. But man, I dread getting involved again right now. After I retired I wouldn't mind, but it has a way of sucking up every minute. 45920. judithathome - 4/2/2015 9:05:15 PM Thank you, Mike Pence...look what you have done!
Wiccans Thank Mike Pence For His Support! 45921. judithathome - 4/3/2015 9:09:43 PM Arky, you must be SOOOO proud of Tom Cotton...he seems to have made his way into "Official Mouthpiece for the Republican Party" status on less than 3 months on the job!
