dodged a sinus infection bullet and I've been using a dust mask and eye protection along with meds and this weekend dug flower beds, planted fruit trees and sprayed off the porch and stan weedeated (ate?), so far so good.

I'm worn out just reading that...took a shower, got ready, went to granddaughters for hot dogs, jelly beans, and Peeps...met the new guinea pig they got for the baby.

Too cute...she named him Lollipop and his fur feels so unlike what the way it looks.

Guess I should stop calling her the "baby"...she's will be 6 in August!

Hardly recognized the ex daughter-in-law...seriously, it was a few minutes before I realized who she was. Saw her at Christmas and she looked like herself. Today? She looked totally foreign...she has gained almost 50 pounds and a lot of it is in her FACE...just shocked the hell out of me.

I don't know what made me think of this, but I remembered that bhel puri and I shared an admiration of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #3.

I found this incredible version of Olga Kerns from the Van Cliburne competition in 2001. It is the best version I have ever heard. Enjoy!

As if I weren't depressed enough...my neighbor died yesterday...a woman I have known and admired since I was 12 years old. She was an independent woman, a role model...she had children when I was a child...a beautiful and BOLD woman who made her way in the world with no help from anyone and a woman of CLASS....RIP: MaryJo Smith.

A part of my life is gone.

Liquor and beer have both transformed into a bigger deal than they used to be. All sorts of ethnic foods have experienced a surge in popularity, then later again when someone fuses them with a different type of food. Growing up, I never heard about the thread count in sheets. We made popcorn in a cast iron pan with an ill fitting lid on the stove. Hot sauce was red, and not all that famous. Salsa? WTF is that? My mother used to marinate steak in a teriyaki sauce, but I never saw it in a restaurant. Now, in Seattle at least, you can't huck a rock at a cat that wont get snatched up by an Oriental cook as it tries to run away. Racist? I can never tell. Seriously, we have a teriyaki joint on every damn corner. Pho is being sold everywhere, and I hadn't heard of Pho until a few years ago. Chicken Wings were the throw away piece of the chicken that my mother would eat because she didn't want a full big piece. Now there are restaurants that are known for serving nothing but the wing.

Smoking culture hasn't shrunk as much as you think. Cigars are as popular as ever. With the new vapor cigs, smoking is on the increase again.

Remember when a grilled cheese sandwich was a Kraft Single between two slices of bread? Yesterday for lunch I had a Grilled Cheese that was three kinds of cheese, a tomato slice and pesto on sourdough.

Life goes on...it is the free market! And they say innovation is dead...

Okay...here's his follow-up:

BTW, the Pesto Grilled Cheese was delicious, as was the house salad with Parmesan Ranch Dressing. I don't remember Ranch Dressing being an option in my house or ant restaurant until maybe 73 or 74. Certainly not Ranch with delicious Parmesan Cheese. I used to think Parmesan Cheese was a coarse powder that came out of a green container with a yellow lid. I certainly had no idea you could go to an artisan shop, buy a hunk of it, and grate it yourself.

It goes on and on...

We have a Food Truck here that Specializes in the Grilled Cheese, of all things. The simple, quick meal mom would make us when we were at home ill.(Grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup) or when my parents were going out and she needed something quick and easy to feed us before the baby sitter arrived. Grilled cheese and potato chips.

Over here on the Konkan coast of the Indian subcontinent, cheese has also become quite a big deal.

It's not just cheese, of course. The past 5-7 years, it seems an increasing number of Europeans and some Americans are opting for the Plan B in their life's trajectories, and for a surprising many of them that has involved reaching out for a place in the sun here, at the very far end of what was once the hippie trail. These new arrivals often try to make a go in the world of artisanal foods. So a proliferation of pastry cooks and restauranteurs, and dudes obsessed with smoking fish or stuffing sausages.

Perhaps least anticipated was the fromageurs. There is a Georgian assiduously making real mozzarella di bufala, a pair of Italians churning out delicious young pecorino, studded with green peppercorns and mild Kashmiri chilies. And now a breakthrough that I never expected in my life, a real, deeply satisfying camembert that is made under coconut palms. My boys and I whack a wheel in a sitting...

People around here raise a lot of goats, so there's plenty of goat cheese, but I love the goat's milk soap one of Mose's student's family made. She gave me two lavender bars and they're so wonderful. Stan's former principal made it as well, but this is nicer.
