The Lions Play Football worse than the Tigers play bazeball.

Poor Dee-Troit

Thomas Jones ran for 113 yards and a score as the Bears took control in the second half of their 38-20 win over the N.Y. Giants. Not that the Bears wouldn't have won anyway, but this was the second time in recent years that they've gotten away with this. Standing eight yards deep in the end zone with the ball, Devin Hester couldn't believe his eyes -- the New York Giants were actually walking off the field. He had just gathered in Jay Feely's field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter, a kick that fell short. But the Chicago Bears' return specialist wasn't going to go sprinting off just yet. He gave the Giants a few extra seconds to vacate. And with that, Hester was off to the races, giving the Chicago Bears the inside track on NFC title with a record-tying 108-yard romp that was the knockout blow in a 38-20 victory over the injury-ravaged Giants in their NFC showdown Sunday night. The record-tying return gave Chicago (8-1) a 31-20 lead. On Nov. 13, 2005 -- almost exactly a year ago -- the Bears' Nathan Vasher caught Joe Nedney's missed 52-yard field-goal attempt in the back of the end zone on the final play of the first half and ran it back for a 108-yard TD return. The play helped Chicago beat San Francisco 17-9, and now Hester shares the record for longest NFL play with his teammate.

With Buffalo content to slow down the Indianapolis Colts up-tempo offense, a restrained Peyton Manning relied on short throws, an effective ground game and a time-consuming final drive to lead the Indianapolis Colts past Buffalo 17-16 on Sunday -- and into the NFL record book. Indy is the first team ever to have consecutive 9-0 records.

Fog began to descend on Gillette Stadium as the game came to a close and it was appropriate, as the heavily favored Patriots seemed in a fog, losing to the Jets 17-14, the first time New England has lost two in a row in 57 games. The loss drops the Patriots to 6-3, only one game ahead of the now 5-4 Jets in the AFC East. The numbers for the Patriots offense were deceiving. Tom Brady was a respectable 25 of 37 for 255 yards, a touchdown and one interception. On the ground, Corey Dillon had 98 yards on 11 carries with Laurence Maroney adding another 37 on 12 tries. But two key turnovers -- the Brady pick and a Doug Gabriel fumble deep in Jets territory -- hurt the Patriots chances. On the other side of the ball, Chad Pennington and his offense stayed on the field converting third downs at just under 50 percent while New England was only 3 of 12. A bright note was the game put forth by Reche Caldwell who had 9 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Got an eight-pointer this weekend. Opening day for muzzleloader.

5289. alistairconnor - 11/13/2006 6:25:16 PM

Muzzle loader?
Is that a musket you're using? Powder, ball, wad, ramrod?

5290. iiibbb - 11/13/2006 6:51:53 PM

4 of the six weeks of firearms season here is muzzle-loader. The week before regular rifle is early ML season, and 3 weeks around Christmas and new years.

It is essentially a musket, but we are allowed modern versions (not all states do); you load it with a ramrod, and there is something of a wad (plastic), and the powder can be purchased as a pre-measured pellet. Some states allow scopes. Overall, they are about as good as a rifle out to 150 meters or so. You do only get 1 chance.

We have bow and muzzle loading too, and regular season started Saturday. I saw about ten to twenty deer a day on my commute until Friday. I've hardly seen one since. I don't know how they manage to figure it out, but they seem to know. They're hugely overpopulated here right now.

Oh, and congrats, 3i3b!

Single-handed round-the-world race off to a rocky start.

Lab made 'administrative errors' in Landis tests...

PARIS - The French anti-doping lab that tested American cyclist Floyd Landis' urine samples made an "administrative error" when reporting its findings on his backup "B" sample, the French newspaper Le Monde reported Wednesday.

The newspaper cited unnamed sources as saying the Chatenay-Malabry laboratory gave the wrong number in its report about Landis' second sample. Tests on the rider's two samples indicated that Landis had elevated levels of testosterone in his system when he won the Tour de France in July.

Round-the-world sailors dip far south below Africa and Australia to follow the great circle route, or the shortest distance around the globe staying as close as possible to the poles.

That's completely inaccurate. When they are doing a Round the South Pole route, it barely even qualifies as "round the world" -- they are nowhere near a Great Circle. They should be required to pass close to the antipodes of the starting point.

Considering the race starts in Spain, that would be New Zealand. If they were required to pass north of NZ, they would be largely out of harm's way with respect to icebergs.

Reservatrol increases endurance 100%!!, Rat endurance, that is.

5298. wonkers2 - 11/17/2006 12:34:59 AM

"Reservatrol makes you look like a trained athlete, without the training!" I wonder if it also grows hair and prevents ED?

Cap'n Dirty sez, "W2 ain't speakin' fer The Cap'n!"

Reminds me of Hadacol--a cure for cramps, sciatica, lumbago and the piles! Jex will remember Hadacol from his youth in Louisiana. As I recall its main attraction was it's high alcohol content.

Talk about yuppismo!

5301. Ronski - 11/18/2006 5:34:31 PM

I think this news about reservatrol and red wine is great. I take a lot of antioxidants and foods that have them.

But when I was a little kid living above the store in the Bronx, there was a nice old Italian couple living next door (I still dream of the wife's meatballs, redolent of parsely and cheese), and the husband drank a gallon o' red every day.

He looked pretty old and broken down. But maybe he was really three hundered or something.

Maybe we'll be playing the Razorbacks in Arizona!

5304. wonkers2 - 11/19/2006 5:36:21 PM

It was a great game!

5305. arkymalarky - 11/19/2006 6:09:42 PM

Wouldn't that be cool, Ohio!
