Final's on.

Half an hour in, Spain 1 - 0 Germany.

My girlfriend, who has never shown the slightest interest in football before, is all excited. By reaction, I'm for Germany. They have all the best names. Ballack. Schweinsteiger. Merdesucker.

Too bad there's nothing to see on the field. Not even when there's game. Especially not then

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/john_donovan/06/30/donovan.rays/index.html?eref=T1 - AP James Shields scattered five hits over 6 1-3 innings and B.J. Upton and Gabe Gross homered, helping the Rays remain unbeaten at home against the Red Sox with a 5-4 victory that hiked their lead to 1 1/2 games in the division. The Rays (50-32), surprising owners of the best record in baseball, have won six of seven and shrugged off a six-game losing streak to Boston, which is 6-0 against Tampa Bay at Fenway Park but 0-4 at Tropicana Field. It was the first meeting between the combative division rivals since their much talked about June 5 benches-clearing brawl at Fenway that led to the suspensions of eight players, including Shields (6-5). Both managers said beforehand that they didn't anticipate any carryover from the melee that ensued after Shields hit Coco Crisp in the leg with a pitch during the second inning of a 7-1 Tampa Bay loss.

9-year-old Darren Baker, son of Reds manager Dusty Baker, playfully called Ken Griffey Jr. old on Monday, then watched the 38-year-old outfielder end the game with a swing that was as sweet as ever. His two-run shot - the 603rd of his career - sent Cincinnati to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The fifth game-ending homer of Griffey's career decided a matchup of the NL Central's bottom two teams. It also suggested he's far from over-the-hill, regardless of what the manager's son thinks. Griffey connected off Matt Capps (1-3), who started the ninth with a 3-2 lead and gave it away in only six pitches. David Ross opened with a double to deep center that brought up Griffey, who got into the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth. Griffey was out of the starting lineup, getting some rest with left-hander Paul Maholm starting for Pittsburgh. He had some fun with it before the game, jokingly asking Baker's son why he wasn't playing. Darren Baker's answer: "You can't hit lefties, and you're old!" Griffey laughed. He also got the last laugh by connecting on Capps' changeup for his third homer off a left-hander this season. Griffey was batting only .200 against lefties, one of the reasons he sat until the ninth.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/tennis/specials/wimbledon/2008/06/30/wimbledon.monday2.ap/index.html?eref=T1 - ReutersThe top seeds continue to fall at Wimbledon. Jelena Jankovic, slowed by a knee injury she suffered in the previous round, lost to No. 60-ranked Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-3, 6-2. Svetlana Kuznetsova was beaten by No. 14-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. The elimination before the quarterfinals of the women seeded Nos. 1-4 has never previously happened at Wimbledon since the tournament began keeping such records in 1927. It's the first time it has happened at any Grand Slam event in the 40-year Open era. The men have done better, but not by much. Novak Djokovic, James Blake, Andy Roddick - all handed their hats early on.

The Williams sisters found themselves playing back to back Monday on cozy, clattery Court 2, known as the "Graveyard of Champions." Even after Venus and Serena spent the day at the Graveyard, their title hopes remained very much alive. They're defying the trend in a women's tournament that, by one measure, ranks as the most upset-filled on record. Four-time champion Venus played first, making a high-noon entrance on the court known for its history of upsets and beating Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-4. Ninety minutes later, two-time Serena joined her older sister in the quarterfinals by defeating American Bethanie Mattek 6-3, 6-3. Neither sister has lost a set in the tournament, and the chances of a sibling showdown in the final keep improving as a wave of upsets take out other title contenders. The fourth round claimed No. 2-seeded Jelena Jankovic and No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, leaving No. 5 Elena Dementieva as the highest-seeded survivor among the final eight.

Marat Safin reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time since winning the 2005 Australian Open, beating No. 13 Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. Safin's opponent Wednesday will be No. 31 Feliciano Lopez, who overcame three match points to defeat No. 10 Marcos Baghdatis 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 8-6. Rafael Nadal will next play No. 12-seeded Andy Murray, trying to become the first British man to win Wimbledon since 1936. He thrilled a partisan Centre Court crowd by completing a comeback win just before dark against No. 8 Richard Gasquet, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-4. Roger Federer will next play the last man to beat him at Wimbledon, Mario Ancic. Federer overcame some shaky moments in the first-set tiebreaker to defeat Hewitt 7-6 (7), 6-2, 6-4, while Ancic outlasted Fernando Verdasco 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 13-11.

Andrei WHO?

Nadal truly is the life of this party

Wimbledon, England -- We dance the flamenco tonight. We toast Fernando Torres, the Spanish soccer team and the great Rafael Nadal. We are far, far away from American men's tennis and a women's final certain to please only the Williams family. We have passion, conflict and that sweetest of all sporting moods, anticipation.

6046. jexster - 7/3/2008 5:32:48 PM

Nadal is the only player alive who sprints to the scene after warm-ups. The players say he's like that everywhere, even in the locker room, where he's known for his frantic naked leaps and all-out dashes to the shower.
