Trying to become the first British man to win a major tennis championship since Fred Perry at the 1936 U.S. Open, Murray will face four-time defending champion Roger Federer in the final Monday night. The sixth-seeded Murray won the first two sets against Nadal and was down a break at 3-2 in the third when play was suspended Saturday because of Tropical Storm Hanna. As should surprise no one, the generally indefatigable Nadal made a stand Sunday, taking the third set and going ahead 3-1 in the fourth. But Murray took five of the last six games, breaking Nadal twice and ending the Spaniard's bid to make his first final at the U.S. Open. Murray never before made it past the quarterfinals at a major and never had defeated Nadal in five previous tries. Just like a preseason game, Donovan McNabb finished this one early. By the time he went to the sideline, though, he'd turned in a vintage performance. Former Kentucky Derby winning filly Genuine Risk passed away at Newstead Farm in Virginia on Monday. The mare was 31 years old. Owned by Diana Firestone, Genuine Risk became only the second filly to win the Kentucky Derby when she made history in 1980. Sent off at odds of 13-1 she defeated Rumbo by one length in the 1 1/4 mile race. She was the first female to capture the Run for the Roses since Regret in 1915. Eight years later, Winning Colors joined the two as the third filly to claim the Kentucky Derby… Trained by Leroy Jolley, she was voted 1980 champion three-year-old filly. In a 15-race career, Genuine Risk found the winner's circle 10 times and earned $646,587. She entered the Racing Hall of Fame in 1986.
Disgraced sprinter Marion Jones was released Friday from federal prison after completing most of her six-month sentence for lying about her steroid use. Jones left a halfway house in San Antonio around 8 a.m., said LaTanya Robinson, a community corrections manager for the federal Bureau of Prisons. Jones, who has a house in Austin, will remain on probation. Jones' attorney did not immediately respond to a call or e-mail from The Associated Press requesting comment. The sprinter admitted last October that she used a design Area Laboratory Co-Operative, the lab that became the center of a steroids scandal that touched numerous professional athletes, including baseball star Barry Bonds. Her admission of drug use in 2007 came after years of denials.
Two members of the 2008 Jamaican Olympic track team received shipments of performance-enhancing drugs through an Internet distribution network, according to documents obtained by SI. The documents state that between June 2006 and February 2007, two shipments of Somatropin (Human Growth Hormone, HGH) and one shipment of Triest (Estrogen) were sent to Delloreen London, at a Texas address that traces to the athlete Delloreen Ennis-London; the birth date on the document matches the athlete's as well, though the document lists the person's gender as male. Ennis-London, 33, is a Jamaican hurdler who won the silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2005 World Championships. In Beijing, she finished fifth in the event, but came within .01 of taking bronze.  Back at his best, back at the top of tennis, Roger Federer easily beat Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 Monday to win his fifth consecutive U.S. Open championship and 13th major title overall. Federer is the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win the tournament that many times in a row. He also moved within one major championship of tying Pete Sampras' career record of 14. The victory clearly came as something of a relief to Federer, who has struggled during a lackluster-only-for-him season. He lost in the semifinals at the Australian Open, and to nemesis Rafael Nadal in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, meaning Federer was on the verge of his first year since 2002 without a major title. And his record streak of 237 consecutive weeks at No. 1 ended last month when Nadal surpassed him.
I'm happy to see both Serena and Federer win. It wouldn't have bothered me much had either of them lost, but especially in Federer's case, I'm glad for the outcome.

Myers pitched a two-hitter and the Philadelphia Phillies moved into a tie for the NL wild-card lead, sweeping a day-night doubleheader from Milwaukee by winning the second game 6-1 on Sunday. And with the Mets losing to Atlanta, Philadelphia moved within a game of the Mets in the NL East.
The Boston Red Sox dressed their rookies in thrift shop castoffs and kid-flick clothing on Sunday, as is the tradition for their last road trip of the season. Once they get to Tampa, it's time to get serious. Jon Lester held Toronto to four hits over eight innings to outpitch Roy Halladay as Boston won 4-3 to take three of four from the third-place Blue Jays. The Red Sox quickly turned their attention to the team on top of the AL East, heading south for three against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in a building where Boston is 0-6 so far this season. The Red Sox moved within one game of the Rays on Sunday when Tampa Bay lost to the New York Yankees 8-4. Boston took a six-game lead in the wild card over the Minnesota Twins, who lost 7-3 to Baltimore.
All the elements were in Carlos Zambrano's favor. Zambrano pitched the first no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs in 36 years, returning from a sore rotator cuff to shut down the Houston Astros 5-0 Sunday night in a game relocated because of Hurricane Ike. Pitching for the first time since Sept. 2, and cheered on by thousands of Cubs fans, Zambrano stopped a Houston team that had not played since Thursday. The storm forced baseball to move two games from Texas to Miller Park and the weary Astros arrived only hours before the first pitch. The Cubs, meanwhile, faced a short bus ride. Plenty of their faithful followed them up I-94, once again turning the Brewers' ballpark into "Wrigley North." This was baseball's first neutral-site no-hitter, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

Matt Cassel was efficient running the offense in his first NFL start, taking over for the injured quarterback and leading the Patriots over Brett Favre and the New York Jets 19-10 on Sunday. Cassel, who hadn't started at any level since his senior year of high school, was 16-of-23 for 165 yards, Sammy Morris ran for a touchdown and Stephen Gostkowski kicked four field goals. The Jets, slight favorites going in, and Patriots receiver Randy Moss said New England was still the team to beat even without Brady, who was lost for the season last Sunday when he injured his left knee against Kansas City. The Patriots (2-0) then showed why, ruining the Jets' home opener and Favre's first regular-season home start for New York. New England won its 21st straight regular-season game, and beat the Jets for the eighth straight time at the Meadowlands.
Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes in the first four drives of his second start, helping Green Bay build a big lead it needed in a 48-25 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Green Bay led 21-0 midway through the second quarter, but fell behind by a point with 7:41 left after Calvin Johnson caught his second TD in the fourth quarter. The Packers went back ahead with a field goal on the ensuing drive, then turned the game back into the rout it had been with three straight interceptions. Charles Woodson and Nick Collins returned two of the picks for touchdowns, giving Green Bay a lopsided lead again. Last season in Detroit, Favre helped the Packers build a 34-12 lead in the fourth before holding off a rally. Green Bay (2-0) certainly will not regret its decision any time soon to stick with Rodgers and trade Favre to the New York Jets after he came out of retirement. The Packers stayed committed to the first-round pick from 2005 despite mounting hype about Favre's possible return during the offseason. Rodgers was 24-of-38 for 328 yards, three scores and a fumble in his first start on the road and his first fourth-quarter comeback.
