Lance Armstrong won the individual time trial of the 25th annual Tour de Gruene, covering 16 miles in 33 minutes, 14 seconds to finish nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Erick Benz in the race along the Guadalupe River on Saturday. The seven-time Tour de France champion announced in September that he was ending a three-year retirement to draw more attention to his global campaign to fight cancer. He said he would aim for an eighth Tour victory, beginning his campaign in January with a race in Australia…

India captain Anil Kumble, the third most successful bowler in test history with 619 wickets, announced his retirement at the end of the third test against Australia. Legspinner Kumble, who turned 38 last month, badly injured his left hand during the drawn match, which would have ruled him out of the final test at Nagpur starting Thursday. India leads the four-match series 1-0. Kumble split the webbing while trying to catch Matthew Hayden at mid-wicket on Friday and was taken to the hospital where he received 11 stitches under general anesthetic…

Don Doane belonged to the same team at a Ravenna bowling alley for 45 years. Just moments after rolling the first perfect 300 game of his life, Doane collapsed onto the floor while high-fiving his Nutt Farm teammates. The 62-year-old Ravenna resident was taken to a local hospital but couldn't be saved. A medical examiner determined that a heart attack killed Doane. Jim Nutt spoke with Grand Rapids TV stations WOOD and WZZM about his friend and teammate, who collapsed Oct. 16 at Ravenna Bowl. Nutt says Doane won't be forgotten by his many friends at the Muskegon County bowling alley. They say it's strange not seeing Doane anymore on league nights.

Former Kentucky Derby champion Alysheba is back home. The 1987 Derby and Preakness winner arrived at the Kentucky Horse Park on Friday after spending the last eight years at his owner's stables in Saudi Arabia. Several hundred fans turned out as the 24-year-old son of Alydar completed his journey. He will be stabled in the Horse Park's Hall of Champions alongside Cigar, Kona Gold and Da Hoss. Horse Park executive director John Nicholson calls Alysheba a symbol of goodwill between people and nations. He says the horse will be appreciated by the hundreds of thousands of guests who visit the park each year.

Adam Vinatieri still has it. The 36-year-old kicker showed his old team Sunday night that age hasn't sapped his distance, accuracy or proclivity for making big field goals. He hit a 52-yarder late in the game to give Indianapolis a desperately needed 18-15 victory over New England - and Vinatieri a measure of revenge. The kick was Vinatieri's longest since a 57-yarder at Chicago on Nov. 10, 2002, and it should have come as no surprise to the Patriots, who used Vinatieri's right foot to win two Super Bowl titles. But New England (5-3) couldn't simply blame Vinatieri for this loss. Of their four time-consuming scoring drives, three resulted in field goals, and Jabar Gaffney dropped a sure touchdown pass late in the third quarter. Then there was tight end David Thomas, who drew a 15-yard dead ball penalty that pushed New England out of field-goal range with 4:45 to go in the game. It sealed the Patriots fate. The result allowed Vinatieri, the Patriots career scoring leader, to show he's still the NFL's best clutch kicker…

The Tennessee Titans made sure their run as the NFL's lone unbeaten team continues for another week. Rob Bironas kicked a 41-yard field goal with 9:36 to go in overtime that kept the Titans perfect with a 19-16 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The kicker had a chance to win in regulation, but banged a 47-yarder off the upright, prompting him to yank his facemask down in anger at himself. The Titans (8-0) won the toss and drove 55 yards in 10 plays to give Bironas another chance. Going out on third-and-2, he swung through his fourth field goal that started the celebration as the Titans matched a franchise record by winning their 11th straight regular-season game.…

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/more/11/02/nyc.marathon.ap/index.html?eref=si_topstories - APPaula Radcliffe became the second woman to win the NYC Marathon three times, pulling away from Ludmila Petrova in the 22nd mile. The Brit finished in two hours, 23 minutes, 56 seconds. The 40-year-old Petrova was second in 2:25:43, eight years after she won the NYC Marathon. She became the oldest woman to finish in the top two since Priscilla Welch of Great Britain won in 1987 at the age of 42. The Russian also set a Masters world record for runners 40 and over, breaking Welch's mark set in London in 1987. Kara Goucher took third in 2:25:53, making her the first American to reach the podium since Anne Marie Letko was third in 1994. She posted the fastest time in a marathon debut by an American woman, breaking Deena Kastor's mark set in this race in 2001.

Radcliffe didn't need a dramatic finish as in her previous two wins -- that was saved for the men's race, in which Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil blew past Abderrahim Goumri with about a mile to go. The men's champion has a special affection for New York, where he has won his only two major marathon titles. He was a surprise winner in 2006 before finishing eighth last year. Goumri pulled away from Gomes in the 22nd mile and appeared headed to his elusive first major marathon title. Instead, the Moroccan was the runner-up for the second straight year, his fourth near-miss in 19 months. Gomes won in 2:08:43. Goumri finished in 2:09:07, and Daniel Rono of Kenya was third in 2:11:22 in his NYC Marathon debut.

A 58-year-old Brazilian runner died Sunday night, several hours after he crossed the finish line and complained to race officials he felt ill. Carlos Jose Gomes of Sao Paulo died at Lennox Hill hospital according to police. The cause of death was not immediately released. At least two other runners fell ill during the race and had to be hospitalized.

AP - Celtics' Rajon Rondo (9) shoots against Knicks' Nate RobinsonRajon Rondo made things looks easy in the third quarter. Kind of like how the Boston Celtics are making NBA games look. Rondo scored 18 of his 26 points in the quarter to help the Celtics tie a franchise record with their 18th straight win, beating the New York Knicks 124-105 Sunday night. The win improved Boston's record to 26-2, matching the NBA mark for the best start by a team with two losses. The Celtics can break the record at home against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night…

LeBron James scored 31 points and Mo Williams provided the kind of scoring punch expected out of him when he was brought in to be LeBron's sidekick as Cleveland finished a four-game road trip with a 102-91 win Sunday night over the Oklahoma City Thunder. On Saturday, James for the first time said that he'd ''consider'' re-signing with the Cavaliers at the end of this season and forgo his first chance at being a free agent a year later. He followed that up by eclipsing 30 points for the fourth straight game, providing another example of why he'd be so coveted if other NBA teams got to bid for his services…

The Dallas Mavericks have one of the best point guards in NBA history. The Washington Wizards have 21 losses in 25 games. On a night when Jason Kidd took over the game in the fourth quarter, the Wizards again imploded in the fourth. Kidd had 11 assists - six in the game's final 6:05 as Dallas sent Washington to its sixth straight loss, 97-86 Sunday night. Washington tied a 42-year-old franchise record for worst start - the 1966-67 Baltimore Bullets also started 4-21. The win was Dallas' 13th in 17, even though the Mavericks made only five of 30 3-pointers two nights after a 24-point loss at New Jersey. Jason Terry scored 25 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 23. Kidd, who is averaging 9.3 points, missed all seven of his field goals and had just a single point, but as the Wizards languished in the fourth quarter for the fourth straight game, it was Kidd's game…

AP - Bruins' Blake Wheeler (26) shoots around Blues' Manny LegaceBlake Wheeler had to improvise when Boston teammate David Krejci headed off the ice for a line change. Minutes after Wheeler opened the scoring, the rookie right wing used a spin-o-rama move to score a short-handed goal in Boston's 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night, the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins' fifth straight victory. Phil Kessel , Wheeler's teammate for a season at the University of Minnesota, had two assists to extend his points streak to 18 games. Kessel's streak is Boston's longest since Adam Oates had a 20-gamer in 1997-98. Michael Ryder had a goal and an assist, Shane Hnidy , Marc Savard and Vladimir Sobotka also scored, and Manny Fernandez made 29 saves. The Bruins are 19-3-1 in their last 23 games and 24-5-4 overall, their best 33-game start since the 1929-30 season…

Tomas Vokoun was quick to credit his Florida Panthers teammates after his second shutout of the season. Vokoun made 23 saves for his 27th career shutout, and Brett McLean , Richard Zednik and Bryan McCabe scored goals in Florida's 3-0 victory over Colorado on Sunday night. It was Vokoun's third start in four games and third strong performance. After giving way to Craig Anderson in six of seven games from Nov. 28 to Dec. 11, Vokoun gave up two goals in a shootout win at Calgary on Dec. 12 and made 35 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss at Carolina on Thursday night…

The Carolina Hurricanes came up with a perfect storm of their own for a big win in snow-snarled Montreal. Tuomo Ruutu scored 1:43 into overtime to give Carolina a 3-2 victory over the Canadiens on Sunday night. Ruutu got behind Carey Price and brought the puck around the left post before sliding it over the goal line after a shot squirted through the Montreal goalie's pads. Eric Staal had three points for Carolina, including his 14th goal in the second. Sergei Samsonov had a goal and an assist, and Cam Ward made 26 saves to help the Hurricanes improve to 4-1-3 in their last eight games…

New England whupped Arizona 47-7 with a blizzard of points on a snow-covered field Sunday. It might not be enough to get the Patriots in. Miami, tied with the Patriots at 10-5 but with the tiebreaker edge, would win the AFC East with a victory over the New York Jets next Sunday. Baltimore would get the AFC's one available wild-card spot by beating Jacksonville, leaving New England out for the first time in six years. But on Sunday, the Patriots showed total superiority to the struggling champions of the weak NFC West. They pressured Kurt Warner into one of his worst games in 11 pro seasons as he threw for just 30 yards. The Cardinals' defense was more miserable than the weather, allowing the Patriots to score on nine of their 10 possessions before Matt Cassel got the rest of the game off. New England held a huge margin of 514 to 186 yards over the NFL's second-highest scoring team. The Cardinals (8-7) didn't blame their fourth loss in five games on the snowy conditions that they never see in Arizona. The Patriots are 10-0 in home games in which snow has fallen during the game and, unlike the Cardinals, practiced in it last week…

AP - Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, center, fumbles the ballWhen Mike Smith took over as coach of the Atlanta Falcons in January, he inherited a team still smarting from Bobby Petrino's defection and sickened by Michael Vick's incarceration. Things are coming together much faster than even the white-haired optimist ever could imagine. Matt Ryan threw for a touchdown and made no big mistakes, Justin Blalock recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score and the Minnesota Vikings committed four turnovers in 24-17 loss on Sunday that clinched a postseason berth for the Falcons. Michael Turner rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown for the Falcons (10-5), who were 4-12 a year ago and ended the season without a head coach or a franchise quarterback…

The coldest conditions any Miami team has played in couldn't stop these history-making Dolphins. Thriving in mind-numbing frigidity, Chad Pennington threw three touchdown passes Sunday in a 38-31 victory over Kansas City that continued one of the most remarkable comeback seasons in NFL history. A year after going 1-15, the Dolphins can clinch the AFC East next weekend by beating the New York Jets , the team that cast Pennington aside when it acquired Brett Favre. The Dolphins (10-5) became the first team to win 10 games after winning only one the previous season, but needed a 14-point fourth quarter after Kansas City (2-13) took a 31-24 lead late in the third…

Sugar Bowl
Utah 31-17 over Alabama

The BCS Championship game is tomorrow night between #1 Florida and #2 Oklahoma.

The office of Jack Kemp says the former housing secretary, congressman and Buffalo Bills quarterback has been diagnosed with cancer. A statement issued in Buffalo, N.Y., says Kemp is undergoing tests to assess the origin of the disease and the best treatment. The statement issued Wednesday did not disclose the type of cancer. Kemp says he will continue to serve as chairman of his Washington-based Kemp Partners consulting firm and will remain involved in charitable and political work.

Despite winning 11 games, the Patriots did not make it into the NFL Playoffs. With the wild card games over, the divisional playoff games are set. On Saturday, the Titans play the Ravens at Tennessee, and the Cardinals play the Panthers at NC. Sundays games will be the Eagles and the Giants at the Meadowlands, and the Chargers and the Steelers at Pittsburgh.

It happened by shootout, their seventh straight win and one supported by a home-ice crowd that - for a change - didn't leave much room for the rival fans. The Capitals dished out some payback Tuesday night, getting a 2-1 shootout win to avenge the only loss they've had in a month and ease some of the sting from last year's first-round playoff series loss. Theodore made 33 saves and stopped all three shots in the shootout, strengthening his claim to the No. 1 goaltender spot. Nicklas Backstrom scored on the power play in the first period for the Capitals, and Viktor Kozlov was the only player from either team in the shootout to find the net. Washington has won 12 of 13 and 18 of 20, its last defeat a 7-1 drubbing at Philadelphia on Dec. 20. The Capitals improved to an Eastern Conference-best 18-1-1 at the Verizon Center and have never had a better overall record at the midpoint of an 82-game season…

The Minnesota Wild showed why they're the NHL's top defensive team by completely shutting down the league's best offensive club. Niklas Backstrom stopped 28 shots for his second straight shutout and fifth of the season to lead Wild to a 1-0 win over Boston, handing the Bruins their first shutout of the season on Tuesday night. Marek Zidlicky scored a second-period power-play goal, lifting Minnesota to its second win against the Eastern Conference-leading Bruins this season. The victory was the sixth straight against an Eastern Conference team for the Wild and raised their mark to 10-1-1 against teams from the East this season. It was Boston's second straight loss, coming after its longest winning streak in nearly 36 years was stopped at 10 games on Saturday…

After 19 straight wins and an NBA record 27-2 start, the Boston Celtics have lost that swagger. The lockdown defense and the poise are missing, too, as teams line up to get a shot at the defending champions. On Tuesday, it was the lowly Charlotte Bobcats , as Raymond Felton scored 25 points and rookie D.J. Augustin added 11 of his 20 in overtime in a stunning 114-106 win that sent the Celtics to their fifth loss in seven games. Going from unbeatable to vulnerable in less than two weeks, the Celtics were searching for answers after being left battered, bruised and angry by Larry Brown's upstart Bobcats…

David West scored 15 of his 40 points in the final period to outscore Los Angeles by himself, and New Orleans beat Los Angeles 116-105 to snap the Lakers' 15-game home winning streak. The Lakers led 92-89 entering the fourth quarter before shooting just 5-of-21, including 3-of-11 from 3-point range while being outscored 27-13. Bryant led the Lakers with 39 points and seven assists, but scored only two in the fourth quarter, shooting 1-of-6 after going 13-of-16, including 6-of-6 from 3-point range in the first three quarters…

Randy Foye assured the Minnesota Timberwolves would achieve their longest winning streak in two years. Foye scored 23 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 40 seconds left, and the Timberwolves weathered a late rally to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 94-87 Tuesday night. Following his basket, Foye blocked O.J. Mayo's shot on the next Memphis possession, leading to a fast-break basket by Ryan Gomes , and the Timberwolves secured their third straight win - the first time they've won three in a row since January 2007…
