6505. Magoseph - 4/27/2005 3:43:25 PM I had two wisdom teeth taken out the last two weeks--prevention, said the dentist, at this point in your life. I guess by now I should be glad to have all my teeth, but one that recently broke and soon will be an implant. 6506. concerned - 4/30/2005 12:23:31 AM I've seen data that indicates that Kelloggs All-Bran cereal has about half the glycemic index rating of most popular cereals. I'll have to check some out since I don't care to make more of a production out of breakfast by preparing foods than I have to.
Looks like I should start moving toward nuts for munchies too since they seem to have very low glycemic indices. 6507. arkymalarky - 4/30/2005 12:38:08 AM Bob eats lots of nuts. You really ought to try that Kashi seven grain cereal. Tastes a lot better than All Bran, too. 6508. concerned - 4/30/2005 7:18:08 AM Any idea how Kashi rates as far as GI or loading? Btw, I notice that tofu looks pretty bad there, and pasta can be pretty good if its al dente. 6509. concerned - 4/30/2005 7:56:30 AM I downloaded a GI listing for breakfast cereals from which I excerpted the following:
Rice Bran 27
Kelloggs' All Bran Fruit 'n Oats 55
Kelloggs' Guardian 59
All-bran 60
Red River Cereal 70
Bran Buds 75
Special K 77
Oat Bran 78
Kelloggs' Honey Smacks 78
Muesli 80
Kelloggs' Mini-Wheats (whole wheat) 81
Bran Chex 83
Kelloggs' Just Right 84
Porridge (oatmeal) 87
Life 94
Nutri-grain 94
Grapenuts 96
Sustain 97
Shredded Wheat 99
I don't know exactly what the 'rice bran' is that's referred to, but the Kelloggs All Bran looks like the best of the bunch that's actually available. Compare to Cheerios at 106, Total at 109 and Cornflakes at 119. For whatever reason, there's no mention of Kashi in this list. 6510. arkymalarky - 4/30/2005 6:48:13 PM It's excellent, but I'll get some specific info when I go downstairs later and post it. It's not a major brand, but it's in lots of stores and is growing in popularity. I'd never heard of it before last summer, and they have it in our grocery store. If you can get it there, it's pretty easy to get. 6511. thoughtful - 5/1/2005 2:01:24 PM While in general the GI will point you in the right direction, I'm very suspicious of how it is calculated and some of their findings. For example, according to this list frosted flakes which are each doused in sugar coating are only 55 vs. plain cornflakes at 83. That just makes no intuitive sense.
Further, eating your food in combination can affect the 'glycemic effect' as fats and proteins and fiber will slow down the speed with which the sugars are absorbed in the system. So in my book, it's easier to limit rather than eliminate the very sweet and dampen their effect by combining them with other low-sugar foods. So, for example, it's better to eat peanut butter on a cracker rather than plain crackers. Also, when you balance your meals and snacks, you will feel full faster and eat less. Carbos take a long time to register with the digestive system so are easily overeaten. Far harder to overeat fats as you will feel sick if you do.
Also for that reason, drinking calories is not a good idea as that goes right into sugar in the body leading to an insulin rush. Things like soda, fruit juices, alcoholic drinks all cause a sugar rush. Artificial sweeteners are no better. Better to drink water and eat your calories instead. More satisfying too. 6512. wonkers2 - 5/8/2005 1:37:54 PM Alzheimer's Here. 6513. concerned - 5/9/2005 7:15:08 AM Any potential health issues aside, I found I can still touch a 10' basketball rim from a standing jump today. During a teleconference with reporters, Hwang argued that the two-dimensional blastocysts created in his lab shouldn't even be called embryos: "As you know, an embryo can be said as spermatozoa and oocyte [sperm and egg] fertilization, but there is no path to fertilization in our process ... I can say this result is not an embryo, just a nuclear transfer construct."
That clear enough for you Lefties?

Of course, I would certainly lose weight if I added a lot of dairy products to my diet...it gives me the trots!!! 6522. wonkers2 - 6/14/2005 10:15:54 PM Are you among the 50 percent of Americans who have or will experience mental illness? Here. 6523. wonkers2 - 6/18/2005 1:13:15 PM CROOK ALERT!!!
