Another long game, but only nine innings.

The Dodgers hadn't lost a game all season when they had a four run lead. The Sox hadn't recovered from being more than three runs behind. Both statements are moot after last night.

The first 5-1/2 innings were staid at best, then the Dodgers woke up and scored four runs. It looked like game over.

But this particular BoSox team has some quirks. They don't care about two strikes, or two outs. They carry on. Between the seventh and top of the ninth innings, they scored nine runs to take a 9-4 lead. With a tired Sox closer, the Dodgers scraped up two more runs, but the final score was 9-6 in favor of Boston.

You could skip the first five innings and just watch the last four if you don't care about some good pitching by both teams. Eduardo Rodriguez pitched like the Sox have been expecting him to pitch for the first five + innings. And 38 year old Rich Hill did very well indeed for LA into the sixth inning, and maybe Dave Roberts (beloved in Boston, fwiw) should have pulled him before the seventh inning, but I'm not sure it would have mattered. The Sox are something of a freak show this year.

Well done, Alex Cora.

The 145th Kentucky Derby took place a couple weeks ago. The track, usually one that drains and seals pretty well, was a sloppy mess. Usually there is a field of 20 horses and this year the favorite was Omaha Beach, who was withdrawn a few days before the race due to an entrapped epiglottis (has since been repaired and OB is doing fine). Bodexpress became his replacement. Haikal also withdrew, was having hoof problems, but due to the lateness of the scratch, no horse was entered as a replacement, so the field was down to 19. Still too many, imho.

Without OB, Maximum Security ended up being the race day favorite, and indeed he won. A big longshot, Country House, finished a decent second, with a group behind him. The problem was, Maximum Security had swerved out from his position coming out of the final turn and he damn near caused a tragedy.

Jockey Luis Saez said his horse was inexperienced and spooked at noise from the infield. Unfortunately, inexperience isn't a great excuse, it could be said of most of the horses in the race. Noise from the infield is an issue, but it is also the jockey's job to keep his horse in his path. MS did two things - first, he switched leads too soon, which started him moving to his right and into the path of War of Will, who was trying to get through an opening. It was really amazing that WoW didn't go down, and if he had, a bunch of horses behind him would have also gone down. When Saez got MS moving back to the left and back into his original path, he overcorrected and bumped into Code of Honor coming up along the rail. MS was, after a very careful 22 minute long review, DQ'd. Rightfully so, again imho.

The Wests, MS's owners, are filing a court case to have the stewards' decision overturned (the stewards denied their appeal), but I will be shocked if that happens, and frankly the Wests should know better, stop whining and get their horse ready for his next race. They claim the "evidence" from Ricky Depass's slowed down and annotated video shows their horse did nothing wrong. I'm not so sure. In trying to exonerate MS, what the annotation fails to annotate is the movement by MS. FWIW, video maker and assistant trainer Depass is related to Saez's agent.

Next, Luis Saez was suspended for two weeks by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. I wasn't as sure that he could have prevented MS from moving to his right when he did, but having now watched the various videos several times, I would like to hear why, when his horse switched leads too soon, he wasn't better prepared for the shift to the right. Also, Saez has a history of questionable riding tactics. Maybe it was just time. The suspension runs from May 23-27, May 30-31, June 1-2, June 6-9 and June 13-14. Saez will be riding regularly at Belmont Park and could miss Belmont Stakes day on June 8.

Full disclosure - I had a $2 show bet on Country House, so making him the winner didn't benefit me and I have no financial stake in the argument. I was thrilled to see him get 2nd, I had been talking about him to my sister for two months. Just a horse who caught my eye.

There is still a lot of noise swirling around the KD, we'll see what, if anything, changes.

The World Cup final was a fabulous game, likely the most exciting soccer game I've ever seen. I'm so happy for Messi.
