Well here's the URL, Alistair and it's not to be missed because it gives the viewer such a palpable sense of the distances inherent in our universe. It's a remarkable and brilliant visual and well worth viewing over and over.

Can't get the effect of the dots on my blackberry (or maybe I didn't look at them right) and I quit Moting at work several years ago. When rural people cease to be America's redheaded step-children and get dsl like everyone else I'll keep up with all the cool stuff better.

Oooh. Got a cool #, tho.

I tried to post on the Mote yesteday with my brand new touchy-feely telephone. I don't think I'll make a habit of it.

I have now seen the Known Universe -- thank you for that Wiz!

Except I didn't need the lesson in humility. I'm already way too humble.

I like your ironic humor, Alistair.

Mean old mother nature...

A week or so ago Green Bay's fancy LED traffic lights were frozen and inoperable.

Yesterday came word of wind turbine generators freezing.

It's that darn unruly arctic oscillation...

According to Mark Serreze, it's the Arctic Oscillation.

Serreze is the director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He tells host Guy Raz that the Arctic Oscillation is basically "just a honking big weather pattern. And it's rather unpredictable."

Coldest January since 1987 over here... that feels about right.

Wiz's post in Politics reminds me of something I meant to ask here in this discussion:
Why can't they make a handheld that supports flash? I was very underwhelmed by the i-pad. Friends and fam are trying to get me to replace my blackberry with an iphone (I call them Pod People) and I'm just not compelled to change unless they come up with flash support and a few other features I would like to see.

Who dat sayin' the U.S. isn't up for the 21st century?

After many many months of playing with the beta and RC1 versions of Windows 7, the time has come for me to install the real deal. I've had it for quite a while, just haven't had a block of days to do a clean install and re-install all my software. Now, whether I have the time or not, I have no choice. At the end of the weekend, my beloved RC1 will shut down every two hours. I can't deal with that.

Once it's done, I'll post about my nifty new back-up tools - an Azio ADP-SU33 dock and a 1tb Hitachi internal drive. I am very happy.

I'm thinking about getting a motorola droid. Anyone know anything about them? This phone's getting worn out and I just don't want to get an iphone. For one thing, it's a much bigger social obligation than I want, best I can tell from Bpb and Mose.

7788. arkymalarky - 3/26/2010 6:50:12 PM

Looked at one yesterday. Contract's not up until august, so someone had better talk me down by then. I have just developed a prejudice about iphones. I don't like how proprietary apple's getting, and in their feud with google I side with google. I'm probably wrong, but I think apple's making the same mistake it did with MS years ago. Anyway, I don't want to be a pod person and I really like the droid phone.

My son has a G1, which uses the Droid OS, and he likes it ALOT.

7790. arkymalarky - 3/26/2010 9:30:16 PM

Living in the boonies and not liking satellite internet, I've resigned myself to the fact that my cellphone is my connection to the internet. Using it as a modem out here is super slow, so I want to get as much as I can directly from the phone. Iphone is very appealing in that way, but I think I would like a droid better and it seems a lot more flexible.

Muons, gluons, leptons and hardons aplenty as CERN fires up the very sexy LHC, after eighteen months of repairs.

Higgs Boson, come here, I want you.

A live synoptic of the darn great thing.

With my new Droid I can now view Wiz's stuff!

7793. arkymalarky - 4/2/2010 2:32:53 AM

Way cool universe video, Wiz!
